    Really really good video, it's nice to hear someone's genuine thoughts on being in such a highly coveted position. IMO people idolize mods way too much, they're just dedicated players doing volunteer work for RobTop because they really love the game and its community. They're normal people like anyone else and I always try to remind people about it

    I know it can probably be very stressful to be a mod, considering more people send levels for them to check out. It can be overwhelming at times. But still, everything you say is 100% true. I heard that being a mod does have positives and negatives…
    Happy Modiversary by the way!

  • @MrNexis3
    @MrNexis3 4 місяці тому +7

    This is so real. Lots of people treat mods as tools more than as people. All of you are players, same as us, after all. Like you said - you only have a few more buttons. I've talked with mods like Incidius or Hexagon who are more active in the platformer community and they are really chill people! I've learned how to disconnect them from their status and I just treat them the same as other cool players in the community. A lot more people should consider taking this approach.

    • @auskgd
      @auskgd  4 місяці тому

  • @GeckoGD

    great video! i think a large part of the reason for the "mods must take requests" opinion is just frustration with the level rating system honestly, it's incredibly difficult to get a level rated through level request servers & streams due to how many good levels are made & sent each day, so the anger with the system gets thrown onto moderators as they are the only ones who can help creators get levels rated
    hopefully if the system is revamped at some point then this frustration against mods who don't do requests will die out

    • @alecrutz956
      @alecrutz956 4 місяці тому +4

      it's also the fact that it comes down to literal RNG at times, when they have it randomized what level is selected next. And having to be heard in a chat spamming their levels, hoping to god the mod will choose your level.

    I understand your role as a moderator, it is a role in which you must have a lot of responsibility, it must be frustrating to spend the whole day playing requests, as it must be very tiring, btw you are in a university, that makes the "Taking requests" harder. I want to say a HUGE THANKS for being this incredible moderador, IMO you're the "best" one (there's not a BEST moderator, I just say you as the best because you're a good person and you're Brazilian, as me) Sorry if my english is bad, but thank you so much Ausk! ;)

    Although there are lots of cons to being a mod, I think it would be an incredible feeling to be able to make someone’s day with one click of a button. The fact the moderators can do that is what’s inspired me to try and become a mod. I understand your point about people messaging you just to get a level sent, but I think that the pros far out way the cons, and I would literally give my left kidney to become a mod. Brilliant video, and it’s nice to see this from the perspective of an actual mod, rather than people who make videos because they take level requests and just think that they are pretty much mods. Also it would be great to have an ingame system where you could request your levels directly to mods, so if people don’t have discord and stuff, their rate worthy level could still get rated. Also there could be some sort of request mod who is not qualified enough to send levels to Rob, yet can remove complete troll levels from the list of mod checks. For example, people who are in the top 100 creators could vote on levels to get taken off the list because they are troll levels or completely un-rate worthy and if it gets 3 or so votes, the level gets taken off the list to ensure there is no corruption. Anyway, brilliant video and have a nice day 😀🤩

    I remember being so hungry for a GD Moderator badge four years ago for some kind of status in the community and will to spend HOURS EVERY DAY JUST TO SEND LEVELS… But now that I’ve grown up from it, I realised how genuinely frustrating the treatment has to be. For example I still play the game almost everyday, but sometimes I just dip for two weeks to do other things I’m passionate about and that’s completely natural. With mods however, this kind of “break of rhythm” might result to the community shaming you for not doing your job properly (even tho it’s not even your job to log in EVERY SINGLE DAY and the rest of the mod team would definitely understand)… but the surface level of players really do consider mods as a level rating machine. It’s sad since I used to hunt creator points as well just like everyone else and there’s nothing bad about it. But now that I stopped caring so much, my perception of mods as human beings changed so rapidly.

    One thing about the rating system is that, levels can get lost, no matter how many sends you get.
    For example recently one of my levels has reached 6 sends, at it has gone by 2 weeks which is weird, still somehow not found by Rob.
    I have had happened before with my past levels too, idk what’s causing it.

I always think of them as a bridge to communicate between us and robtop and I appreciate that you give your voices to those who doesn’t have any strong community presence in the game and give a spotlight especially those who’s new to creating and wanted to get notice of their work only that they don’t have anyone to have a direct connection to the community for exposure of their creation. I hope we treat the mods the way they treat us. 😊

    If I were a mod I’d tell the people “Today I will accept requests at 00:00 (time and area) until 00:00. Any requests sent outside of that time will not be accepted.” But I know hundreds of people will submit levels in that period of time, so it may not be possible to see them all, and I’d also mention that, even if it’s obvious.

    The point about conversations feeling like they are only talking to you to get what they want is so real. I get a lot of DM's every day from people much younger than me making 'small talk' and whilst I don't mind too much, I'd rather they join my community and talk to me through the public channels. That way they can interact with their peers instead, because when they talk to me it just feels really weird and parasocial.
    I find it hard figuring out what kind of community figure I want to be, because I'm not the type of guy to close my DM's and be very private- I do enjoy being open and honest with people. But at the same time that honesty can give people a false sense of "friendship" with me that is not reciprocated at all.
    I get being young and online can feel lonely sometimes. So I understand where these people come from, I've been in their shoes plenty of times. But now that I myself have a big enough audience that I technically have "fans" part of me is wondering if I need to start becoming more and more private to protect my self interests, at the cost of coming across as more rude and mean spirited.
    Cause all it takes is 1 person with the wrong information to doxx me. Or to tell me some deeply private stuff that they probably shouldn't tell me because how do they know I can be trusted? What if they give personal information to somebody after me and then that person ends up taking advantage of it? It is incredibly dangerous and I am scared for lonely young kids in this community that put blind faith into content creators and streamers like me.

    com licença, senhores, mas eu sou amigo do ausk desde a época do lendário ataraxia by ausk & more 🧐
    mas falando sério, eu adorei ver você falando da sua experiência como mod; enquanto o time de moderadores tem suas controvérsias e tals, é bom lembrar que todo mundo na comunidade, no final das contas, só quer aproveitar um joguin de quadrado que pula :)

    I would genuinely like to befriend mods but every time I try to contact them they just don't respond. It's not that I'm trying to get anything out of them but because I want to know what being a mod is like and just becoming friends with the person. It upsets me that they just think I want to use the mod for a sent level.
    You bring up really good points though. Being a mod probably is really hard at times. You're doing great though!

  • @Phinicrast

    im totally agreed with the misinterpretation because i know also that when you're a moderator many people will just go to you to say like ''hey rate my level i really want cp'' or because they want a level rated. Extra:
    And i know probably that im not going to get a level rated because im lazy

    Amazing video setting up what mods do and what expectations they get hit with, it's quite the different perspective a casual player will have compared to a mod of the game so these insights are really interesting!
    Unrelated but Wait did I hear Zelda Spirit Tracks OST on this yooooooo

      Tysm for the awesome comment! And you're goated for getting the OST (actually, I use a ton of different stuff from Nintendo and lots are from games I didn't play, but they are great regardless haha)

    Lengthy comment incoming:
    As someone who is looking to get mod and just starting the latter half of high school, thank you for this. It helps me not only understand what you guys do for us and how hard you work but also gives me hope that maybe I have a shot since you've shown that all mods are flexible. I just might need to know the guidelines because I don't have Discord and that might negatively impact the work that I do if I get mod.
    I know you talked about people like Lemons that you looked up to, and I also remember you and many others looking up to SpKale. While I wasn't in the community when he was mod/elder mod (he resigned after Toomas came out in December and I came back in February), I could tell he was INCREDIBLY well-loved and respected. He just seemed like the kind of mod who would do anything for anyone, but also be able to set boundaries and have people respect them. You seem to be going in that direction, which is super admirable of you, even though I think the mods right now are absolutely incredible and the ones who are going for it as well are also fantastic.
    Speaking of elder mod, I’ve always wondered about how you get there since I think you deserve it, but I also know there are certain requirements to get there and I feel like they aren't explained very well. Maybe someone who has been in that position like Viprin, Pauze, SirHadoken, heda, connot, Raivolt, or anyone else can help explain it better because it would be nice to know how it works better!
    I know this was a long comment, so hopefully you can respond to some of it (mainly the top). Really great video. Keep it up.

      I really appreciate you sharing your perspective and the kind words. And yea, Kale is someone I really looked up to, so hearing that makes me happy :)
      As for Elder Mods, it's more like a "separate" role rather than an upgrade. Elders have the main responsibility of actually moderating the game, as in banning users from commenting, deleting levels that break guidelines, etc, while still having the ability and responsibility to send levels, but what they're mainly known for is the moderation part. But because of the name people tend to think it's just a higher level of mod that really good mods get, when it's more like a different function. As for me, it's not something I entirely see myself doing with nearly as much enjoyment as I do while being a Mod and doing Mod things.
      Best wishes with your endeavors :)

    I've always found this community strange in the way they treat mods. I see people suck up to or idolize mods, or straight up bully them and I have no idea why. They're actual people and players like the rest of us

    In the end, those problems are rather human ones that will happen in every community, especially when it gets big like GD.
    They are real problems of course, but not strictly related to GD I believe

    In reference to 3:33, personally i'd like to greet the person THEN send them my level, i feel its much more rude to just DM someone to say "check my level and send it to robtop" with no manners or anything, however i could understand why you want people to just be straightforward with the number of DMs you must get

    i've always been hesitant to send levels gd mods mainly because i feel like im just bothering them or being an "annoyance" to them idk. this probably comes from when moderators i've messaged in the past either havent responded or missed my message (im just a bit of an overthinker). im happy to hear that you're fine with it maybe might send some levels that I or my friend made to you. although they may not be up to standard i always would love some feedback aswell :))
