This is a great exercise, I always struggle with ways to get my HS students to develop their improv and stop thinking harmonically, and in turn think more rhythmically. I'm definitely going to use this for a lesson for them. Thanks.
Love the videos which put emphasis on exercises on jazz standards!
thankyou so much 🥺 i’ve been struggling so long with combining the melodies and rythms i want to play but u literally just untangled my mind
Awesome and inspiring, as always. I'm going to apply it to "Someday my Prince Will Come" - one of next semesters assessed tunes!
Dave (60 year old 2nd year Jazz Performance Degree student at New Zealand School of Music)
What an excellent idea! I'm going to try out over All the things you are. Thanks and greetings.
Awesome Isac! Great tune choice.
This is excellent! I've learned that when I think more rhythmically I come up with new ideas instead of just thinking just about licks. My solos flow better and are more cohesive.
This looks exciting! I've been working on Yardbird Suite and brushing up on Beatrice last few days. I'll be using both tunes for this.
This is definitely one of the best ideas I've seen presented and I watch (way too) many guitar videos.
Glad to hear Phil! Happy to be of help
you have saved my butt so many times with your helpful videos. Thanks so much!!!!
Excelente ideia de exercício. Como eu nunca pensei nisso?😁😁 Faça o video 2, por favor!
Straight to the goal !!!
Beatiful lesson for jazz beginners and not only ... I appreciate ;-)
Thanks
Glad to help!

Amazing! One of the best video about impro
I love step 2!
Hi Brent, I think I am going to try this out with my assignment for "Blue Bossa" the second song in your first course. :)
This lesson really helpful for me......love your channel😎👍
1:45 is when it when it starts
You’re welcome
This was so helpful!! Thanks my dude!
This is amazing!
Your channel is great, man! Thanks!
Thanks Leo! Appreciate it
Very cool lesson, the solo started sounding a little like Jim Hall.
Great exercise.
Going to try it on There Will Never Be Another You. Seems like a really great exercise. Thanks!
Absolutely Phil!
Going to try it on "It Don't Mean a Thing" by Lionel Hampton. Thanks for the video.
Great ,thank you for share
I would like to try on autumn leaves
Loving the Hank Mobley vibes. I've been working for a while on developing a melodic approach to Giant Steps, so I will utilize this more there.
Yes! Good ear. Was totally thinking about Hank Mobley on this.
Very good for exercise
At last, a UA-cam video lesson on how to use rhythm for improvising! Thanks a lot. Will try this on 'All the things you are'. Will appreciate more videos on this subject, if possible. Thanks in advance. Cheers
Indeed, rhythm is not talked about enough, and I’m guilty of it as well!
Cool! Im going to start adding this way of practice :D
Glad to hear Juan!
Going to try this on Good-Bye Pork Pie Hat
Step two make me smile
Genius.
A train. Awesome
Dude, that's Super!
Been working on Autumn leaves this will help lots
Woah this video is truly an eye opener for jazz noob like me, now i know why my solo sound bad, its because i neglect the rythm. Thank you so much, i would like to apply this exercise in st thomas.
Hey Ridho! St Thomas is a great one. Listen to Sonny Rollins solo on that song. He incorporates a lot of rhythmic diversity in his improv
This opens your ears , I like it . My Instrument is Chromatic Harmonica .Regards Lennart😊 I can aply it to Bluesette 🎉
All of me, on guitar. Nice vid thanks alot
I'll try it to: There's No Greater Love. Thanks.
Haha I hit the like button! This is an ingenious way to get the solos down. Thank you!
No problem!
I really liked this video! I want to try the technique out on Days of Wine and Roses.
Awesome Eric, happy practicing!
I'm going to apply it to "I love you".
I'm going to try this on Just Friends.
Gonna try this out on autumn leaves for fun! Wish I watched this before I graduated hs. Going into college now, guess it's never too late 😅
Awesome, I'll use it on solar
I´ll give it a try on along came betty!
Right on!
Currently trying to improvise over Chick Corea's 'Spain'. Loved your lesson :D
top!!
Lol the step #2 really made me do it
Ha! Thanks for humoring me Gustavo.
Great, the video came out at perfect time for me, as I was wondering why my solos were getting so boring. Funny how rhythm, such a basic and really fundamental thing, is taken for granted. Can't wait to use it on anything, maybe I will start with Recordame.
Great and natural tune choice for this exercise!
Good stuff. After 20+ years I'm finally starting to play Giant Steps correctly if not well. I generally play along with Sonny Stitt's Lady is a Tramp somewhere in my warm up so I will try your exercise on that to start. What's your favorite Jobim tune? Estrada del Sol? Chega de Saudade?
Any additional videos with rhythmic motifs in 4/4? I’m working on memorizing “A train” as my first tune.
I fkn SMASHED that like button
Yes! Thanks for humoring me Daniel
thanks so much! i have a solo in ''stand by me'' by ben e. king and my choir teacher says im ''holding back.'' :)
I think I’ll try this exercise on autumn leaves, a well known tune with simple chord progressions
Awesome Drew! Autumn Leaves is a great one to try this out on.
I would like to hear your final product to see how you mixed the 4 rhythmic patterns together melodically.
Video starts at 1:45
this was a great lesson. II'm interested in buying the book, but I was wondering if it comes in tab also for stupid guitarists like me.
I will try it on "Recordame".
Next, " There is no greater love".
Good point, about rhythm! Im a trumpet player and I mess up so much in impros because I get stuck on notes. Just if I'm focused and present in the istance... I play rhythm sentences.
Good choices!
Nice points.. I liked .obey your master .lol..that's funny. Going to the next video.
Ha! Thought I’d lighten the mood. Jazzers are too serious right?
Better yet you're getting sleepier.
@@Learnjazzstandards that's cool.
Wow IM just a beginner in Jazz I play the piano and I hear some of the Lick you compose is the same as mine IT means IM doing IT right..I just doing self study by the way..I like your concepts on learning Jazz the right way.hoping to see more helpful videos from you.
vegeta the4th nice!
Rythme is à indeed a very underinvested skill by most of us.
I will try this excersise on Cute,Pent Up House,It could happen to you, thanks a lot!
All excellent to work with!
I’ll try it on the very same song,
Great choice!
Blue Monk! :)
The blues is a great choice!
@@Learnjazzstandards I'm actually trying to transcribe Dexter's solo on that and I heard that he's doing a lot of that.. rythm-thingy, but didn't realized before watching your movie! :O
Thanks!
I think I would use it on Autumn leaves
Good choice Joseph!
Thanks Brent! What program to you use to make the sheet music?
My pleasure! I use Finale for all of my music notation
I Never have thought about it as setting the rythm first. Guess that's why I'm always amazed by some solos, because I would have never thought about my melodic choice in that rhythmic spacing.
My teacher told me to do something like this' it's actually a good idea for making a solo one you have nothing in your mind. thank's you gave me some stuff to think about!
Awesome, my pleasure!
TAKE FIVE
Great way to work on 5/4!
Do you have a ebook for this?
Yes! This lesson comes from this eBook and companion course: www.learnjazzstandards.com/the-jazz-standards-playbook-2/
I disliekd the vidieo at step two
:(
Tristeeee
Killer
Thanks!
Hmmm maybe Nardis Or Round About Midnight
Ohhh those are ones I haven’t touched in a while, great choices!
@@Learnjazzstandards Yeah they're really great songs! I love this version of Nardis by Bill Evans /watch?v=csGnvbJCQKU and there's a really nice version of Round About Midnight by a guitarist named Kurt Rosenwinkel worth checking out
Green Dolphin Street (:
Awesome Jorge! Green Dolphin is also a great vehicle for melodic motivic development as well
Hey - MOTIF IS SPELLED “MOTIF”, NOT “MOTIVE”.
Hey friend, if it’s the singular form, motif is correct, if it’s plural, motives.
Strange you would make an exercise in 3/4 time when 90% of standard are in 4/4 would have been a good exercise if it was done in 4/4 time jmho
kidpoker007 you can easily apply this to a song in 4/4, in fact I encourage you to do so. Don’t let me stop you
Learn Jazz Standards ok will do
