    The $3900 asking price on the '56 Imperial was about right (dealer price) as the car was less than a year old and sold new for $5225 (yikes that's more than $54,000 in 2022) The 1956 Lincoln convertible was $4747 new and just 2445 were built.
    Love these episodes with all kinds of cars and street traffic. Also the sounds of a four engine propeller driven airliner (DC-6, DC-7, Boeing 377 etc) flying overhead while they're at the motel.
    By the 1960s many DMVs were no longer using engine #'s as ID's as more people were keeping their cars longer and many got engine changes and thus the numbers didn't match.

    • @timhaley3459
      @timhaley3459 3 роки тому +2

      It does seem to be "the good old days" when people were seemingly more polite, more neatly dressed, even for a criminal. However, were things really better in "the good old days" ? Please consider what is expressed at Ecclesiastes 7 in the Bible: "Better is the end of a matter than its beginning........Do not say, “Why were the former days better than these?” for it is not out of wisdom that you ask this."(Ecc 7:8, 10)
      Why would the Bible question that the "former days" as not being something good, when times may have been more enjoyable ? Simply put, because anywhere in time since the rebellion in the garden of Eden some 6,000 years ago, mankind has been "sliding downhill", whereby sin and death has taken down all who are Adam's descendants.
      Even when times were more seemingly secure, we still age and suffer the deadly effects of sin, or imperfection, so that the grave awaits all of us. Death is like a stalker that constantly follows us around, waiting to take us. Hatred was in the past as in is today, so that people are divided into groups and nationalism rears its ugly head.
      But in contrast, the future looks bright under a heavenly government called God's Kingdom, a government that Jesus taught his disciples to pray for.(Matt 6:9, 10) This heavenly government will do as stated at Isaiah 25: "O Jehovah, you are my God. I exalt you, I praise your name, for you have done wonderful things, things purposed from ancient times, in faithfulness, in trustworthiness........In this mountain (or by means of God's Kingdom) Jehovah of armies will make for all the peoples a (symbolic) banquet of rich dishes, a banquet of fine wine, of rich dishes filled with marrow, of fine, filtered wine (or perfect setting of peace and security). In this mountain he will do away with the shroud (of sin, that is like clothing we are forced to wear, that causes sickness and death) that is enveloping all the peoples and the covering that is woven over all the nations. He will swallow up death forever, and the Sovereign Lord Jehovah will wipe away the tears from all faces. The reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth, for Jehovah himself has spoken it."(Isa 25:1, 6-8)
      So, rather than dreaming about the past that was filled with troubles just as now, we can look to the future when there will be perfect peace, perfect health and perfect security on a paradise earth forever, for "meek" ones who have placed their implicit trust in God, whose personal name is Jehovah.(Ps 37:11, 29; Matt 5:5)

      1950's were golden!

    • @winggullseagull1230
      @winggullseagull1230 2 роки тому

      @@timhaley3459 The reason the 1950's are so celebrated & nostalgic is because of the cars of the era. But it's an illusion the world was never perfect at any point in time.
      There were crooks & law breakers even then & even during prosperous times as the 1950's people took their chances & lived outside the law. Jails were over crowded even then prison movies were around since the 1930's.
      There's never been a "perfect" society at any time or there would be no need for police to enforce laws & a judicial system or prisons. That hasn't changed & never will. The past is often romanticized because of the passing of time.

    • @timhaley3459
      @timhaley3459 2 роки тому

      @@winggullseagull1230
      There was once perfection, where "crooks and law breakers" did not exist, in the garden of Eden, some 6,000 years ago. But with the rebellion right after the creation of the first man and woman, now "crooks and law breakers" came into focus, with Adam, Eve and Satan being the original "crooks and lawbreakers".(Gen 3:1-6)
      Since the original rebellion, "crooks and law breakers" became the "norm", while those who adhered to "law" were the exceptions. With Adam and Eve as "crooks and law breakers", introducing sin or imperfection into mankind so that we age and eventually die, while those few who would stand by "law", a way was established that would give them the hope of living forever on a paradise earth.
      And this hope would be centered around a heavenly government called God's Kingdom, in which the "Lord's Prayer" outlines its purpose, saying: "Our Father in the heavens, let your name be sanctified. Let your Kingdom come. Let your will take place, as in heaven, also on earth."(Matt 6:9, 10)
      This heavenly government was created to restore the peace to the earth that was lost in the garden of Eden, so that God's "take place, as in heaven (where there is perfect peace and health), also on earth". This is reiterated at Ephesians 1: "This undeserved kindness he caused to abound toward us in all wisdom and understanding by making known to us the sacred secret of his will. It is according to his good pleasure that he himself purposed for an administration at the full limit of the appointed times (or way of administering God's will), to gather all things together in the Christ, the things in the heavens (or God's heavenly Kingdom whereby 144,001 are chosen to serve as "a kingdom and priests" to God) and the things on the earth (or the hope of living on a paradise earth, see Gen 1:28-31; Luke 23:43)."
      So, perfection that was until the rebellion some 6,000 years ago, will be reestablished once God's Kingdom has fully accomplished its goal of removing everything in opposition to it, death (1 Cor 15:26), political governments (Rev 19:19-21), the religions of the world (Rev 17:16, 17), greedy commerce (Jer 25:29-33; Luke 16:14, 15), etc.(see Matt 12:30)

    Years later in the 1970's I was looking at my dad's old bank accounts from 1955 1956 & 1957 & he had about 10 grand . He was saving to buy property & build a house in 1958 & built by1962. Back when the working man could get ahead & pay cash.

    I like how the man tells the woman to put the ad in the paper to read: “A 1956 Model Sedan for $3,900.00”, like whose going to pay that much for a car without knowing what kind of make it was. But they were not allowed to use the names of the makes of the cars on this show for some reason. A new 2 door Imperial incidentally cost about $4,600.00 in 1956, whereas a 1956 Lincoln Premier Convertible that the man paid $4,000.00 for retailed new for right around $4,300.00. So he didn’t get much of a bargain to begin with. I’d wager a bet that the 1956 2 door Mercury that the car thief is driving is in actuality one of the Highway Patrol cars sans its front door sticker; and to be sure, in the previous episode that I saw the ’56 Mercury that Dan Mathews was driving had a license plate number of KHE 456, whereas the unmarked one on this episode is KHE 457. So maybe there were two of them that they used on the show. And with that said: over and out 10-4.
