Saints boss demands Flynn Downes | Should West Ham cash in on desperation?

- Southampton's failure to sign Flynn Downes on a permanent deal from West Ham will have boss Russell Martin crying himself to sleep.
The 25-year-old enjoyed a hugely successful loan spell at St Mary's last season where he helped the south coast side return to the Premier League via the play-offs.
But an agreement between the two teams is yet to be reached, which has seen Downes report back to the Hammers for pre-season training.
And Martin has pleaded for Saints chiefs to quickly thrash out a deal for the former Swansea star - for the sake of his own welfare.
Speaking at a Q&A session with fans on Saturday, Martin was asked about the club's pursuit of the player.
To which he said: "It will take more time. We just have to be patient. I wanted him here last week, four weeks ago even. When someone is owned by another club, and they are a good player, they are always going to try and keep them. I hope, that at some point, we will show enough love and give West Ham enough money.
"Hopefully, before the end of the season, he will be in a Southampton shirt. If he’s not, I will cry myself to sleep.”
Downes, who won the Europa Conference League with West Ham in his opening season, has made no secret of his openness to play for Southampton next campaign.
He told the Daily Echo in May: "Of course, I would love to stay here next season. I love it here. I love the gaffer. I love the staff. I love this place.
“Obviously, we will have to see what happens. I won’t know too much until I go back to West Ham. We will see what happens there.”

We need to play hardball with Saints. They are deluded if they think they can sell KWP high and buy Downes low when they are desperate for Downes and THEIR player is in the last year of his contract. They will have to blink. Personally I'd keep Downes and buy Wan Bissaka. But if we do sell Downes there should be a 20% sell on clause included so it doesn't come back to bite us.

Unfortunately, if we sell downes first for 15m or 20m, soton will just ask for 20 or 25m for kwp. They want extra cash and are taking the piss. At this point, ask Bournemouth for max Aarons
I'd have liked to see him given a chance....unless there's a desperate need for the cash right now. We can easily sell him at a later time and I don't think the value would greatly change.
I do think there will be a necessity to sell a couple of players with Aguerd being one of those, I know Steidten said there’s money to spend but since then we’ve spent £40m on Kilman
I think the Alvarez injury has stopped this from going through early
Considering we gave away benny,kehrer,fornals etc because they were unwanted we should have the exact opposite in the case of downes.

25m with 25% sell on fee. That’s the cream and I believe easier for Southampton to accept.
To be honest I’d keep Downes & I’d certainly NOT be selling him to Southampton unless they give us a huge fee (£25-30m).
They’ve tried to have our pants down & take the piss & their manager is clearly desperate to have him back.
Give him a chance & if he don’t cut it he can go to Southampton in the Championship next season.
AWB for me , stronger defender but is also able to take advantage of any space in front of him, speedy too.

The question is, how much would we have had to pay for Downes had he been Southampton player!! They would have asked £25-30m & they would be well within their rights considering how key he was for them 🤷♂️
Hang on to Downes, & buy both AWB & KWP giving us cover in both wingback position should Emmy get injured or leave too.
Unfortunately that's 40m minimum. Surely stieten contacts should be identifying bargain fullback from championship like pring from Bristol City, as we have missed out on cheap centre backs like Ronnie Edwards and Jacob greaves with distractions.
I thought Downes was tidy when he played for us but I did not see him play for Southampton so unable to pass judgement and happy with whatever Lopetegui decides after he has seen him in training. I agree Downes in a difficult position whatever he says but was it telling that he said and did the Irons ⚒ when in front of the Saints fans at end of the season which he covered by saying was a joke as that obviously went down like a lead balloon with their fans?
If the club decide to accept an offer for Downes we should get KWP in a straight swap.Not player plus cash to them.
If anything, they should be giving us a few million on top

There's not a single chance we give them cash plus Downes! Downes is 20m given we hold all the cards in this game. KWP is 12-15m at most. If we don't 'win' in this deal then we are the worst negotiators in history.
Cash from them. KWP only has 11mths left on his deal, Downes has 3yrs remaining, is 3yrs younger, Southampton have already bought KWP’s replacement & Downes was their best player last season (so clearly worth more than KWP).

downes was what one of the top midfielders in the championship last season and we want to let him go so we can depend on a kid who played well for a average league 1 club
maybe potts is ready to play some minutes but he almost certainly isn't near downes level and depending on him rather than downes is a mistake
if they are desperate for Flynn then we should make sure we get more money or a much better deal for Walkers-Peters maybe a straight swap as we are in the driving seat we have leverage

I’m 50/50 on Flynn but be nice to keep a player/fan if he proves to be good enough, new players around him may bring the best out of him, think JLo as asked for big media vids to keep the fans in the loop as he knows how our fans have been moaning about being kept in the dark, refreshing to see the new era moving forward ⚒️

Agree with every word of this, last week I started to get feeling perhaps he wanted to stay with us, after Alvarez injury especially but if he wishes to go, I wouldn’t stand in his way as long as it’s a good deal for us
I think Downes is a possession player which could work for Lopetegui though perhaps not very creative but maybe he has that too?

I think that sounds about right. We need to be coming out on top in this deal because we hold all the cards for once. It's like trying to PX your old car, you always lose and that's what Southampton are effectively trying to do.

I’ve been very impressed by Potts but haven’t seen enough to judge as yet but if he has a good summer and Lopetegui is happy, I think it makes sense.

Either sell Downes for £20m or £5m and KWP. Personally I prefer Wan Bissaka using the money from Downes’ sale. Either way, I don’t want Downes at West Ham. He will not play first team and has shown he’s confused from varying remarks made over the last couple of months. I much prefer Freddie Potts be given a shot. He is a better prospect in my opinion and with a higher ceiling as a player.
