    Thanks for the video. Good story but still some addition. If you are going to pre-germinate and cut seed potatoes. Then cut before you pre-germinate, because cutting will release more eyes. Cutting for manual planting is best done lengthwise, both halves then have the same number of eyes. After cutting, leave the halves on top of each other, this prevents dehydration and you get a nice wound healing. Full explanation in my video potato breeding #198 Greetings from a potato breeder from the Netherlands.

    Mine should emerge this week. can't wait.. I did a test, I bought my potatoes in Nov, when they came in I left the sealed box as is and place the box inside of a spare refrigerator set around 38 degrees to keep. Jim on Wood Prarie had said that temp was good to hold the potatoes for an extended period. I took them out of the refrigerator and let them sit 2 weeks in the house and then took them out of the box sitting on some racks. They starting chitting and then I stuck them in the ground a little over a week ago.

    Growing up in Blountstown Florida, we would cut and dip the cut part in lime. Don’t know why but we always had good crops.
    Living in California now, I chit, cut and harden them before planting in large pots. Easy to heal in a big pot simply by adding soil as the plant grows.
    Really enjoy your videos from back home. At least in the same area and climate.

    Now that I'm old i plant most of my potatoes in grow bags or containers. The ones i plant in ground i plant deep and cover with wheat straw if we get a late freeze i pull the straw up over the plants. You have to have them dug before june, then no green potatoes.

      Containers sound great. I may have to try a greenhouse start for potatoes in containers next spring. Don't have the space this year, but I am experimenting just a little. I go from plants taking frost to plants sweltering in the heat in the space of four to six weeks and never get good yields in the ground. By comparison sweet potatoes easily yield five times as much.

    I find it best to chit my taters in moderate, indirect light rather than keeping them in the dark. They will put out short, stout chits that won’t run the risk of growing out weak, long, and spindly chits if something were to come up and push your planting time back. I will even set aside appropriately sized spuds when I harvest them in late summer and leave them sitting on the kitchen windowsill where they will slowly develop thick, strong, chits through the fall and winter that seem to photosynthesize and feed the tuber keeping it far more plump and firm than a similar potato chitted in the dark would be, and once they’re planted they practically jump out of the ground with how vigorous their growth is.

    • @growyourownfood7814
      @growyourownfood7814 5 днів тому

      I have even put them in the garage under led shop lights to get the stouter chits. I also noticed that the potatoes I put in the garage without lights sprouted out faster with those long spindly sprouts. Must be the moisture or something.

      @ it’s simply phototropism, the tendency of plants to grow toward a light source. In a poorly lit environment shoots will stretch out in search of a light source, and will expend a lot of nutrients and energy in the process.

    • @kevindavis3841
      @kevindavis3841 5 днів тому +1

    ok,, the straw thing, now i don't do this, but my understanding of it is this, first it's spoiled hey not fresh, the potato is planted in the soil and the straw is used on top as mulch so that the potato is not exposed to light, no weeds grow and more moisture is held in the soil. i've used straw and or leaves as mulch but i think your correct that potatoes won't do well actually growing in straw spoiled or otherwise.

I watched an old Hoss video when u had them around the okra (in my experience nothing brings them in like okra!) u planted mustard , for bio fumigation. What i didn't see was an old follow up video. Anyways, I know u are busy. But would it be possible for u to do another new video cover this issue. Or possibly referring me to some b4 an after videos when an where u have been able to defeat them RKN. I have been following u for a few years now. I purchased some seeds from u. Jim at wood prairie said 1.5oz to 2.75oz yields the same. At 3oz you have an increase in yield but it’s not double, though you are using double the seed. If there’s no difference between 1.5-2.75, then the least amount necessary for maximum yields is 1.5oz.

    Try to bery the potatoes about a five gallon bucket deep that's what we do up here in Minnesota. The deep part is not what I think you are not understanding about not hilling them. Even when you plant them in your above ground garden you are not going deep and covering it all at once the potatoes plants will grow up throu the soil with out your help or even sun light until it reaches the top. The roots have more space to get bigger.

      I can't dig that deep in my in-ground plots. I don't know many gardeners that could. Seems like that would also make harvesting a pain. I'd much rather harvest slightly below ground level than 2' below ground level.
