  • We're off to Kirkby to see what's going on in the town for school leavers. A great piece of nostalgia! Made in 1980 by ATV. Thanks to Scott Petrie for finding this recording on video tape. Uploaded purely for educational and nostalgic purposes only.

I've seen one of these about Weston-super-Mare so it appears they went UK wide. Interestingly they played 'Same old scene' by Roxy Music in that episode.
I'm from Liverpool originally, only been to Kirkby a couple of times; it always felt disconnected but so close. The estate reminds me a bit of Netherley flats and that was a similar situation. I was only 4 when this was broadcast but my grandparents watched schools TV so I do remember the name 'Cities'.

Their are some lovely parts of Kirkby, they were just showing the deprived areas, the flats in tower hill were due to be demolished, new houses built, then they were about 2 miles away in West vale, some lovely countryside just half a mile walk, parts of London still has them style of flats

Hated the 80s I left school in 84 had to take a YTS £15 quid a week for almost 60 hour week, hated it, my Brother who left in 81 was on a YOP. Was a crap time under Thatcher everything was closing down or being knocked down a very depressing time.

You look at Kirby then and in general how Britain was back in 1980 (when i was just 7 years old) and the UK now looks very different today it's completely unrecognisable for instance no digital technology whats-so-ever, no mobile phones, very basic computers (home computers) the 1980s was the age of the microchip. I bet that cafe in Kirby Town centre now is a Costa Coffee probably and i bet those blocks of flats at 10:10 have long since been demolished. This programme is very much a piece of social history as is all the videos on Vintage Schools Tv (it's a brilliant archive of schools programming nostalgia) many of the programmes i remember watching when i was at school too. Roxy Music and Brian Ferry were a great band too. The music back in the 1980s was excellent and i loved many of the artists and bands, today's music is bloody dreadful and i can't understand a single word of what any of today's artists are singing about. I remember Kraft margarine in those plastic tubs too our school always used it, food products were bigger in size then a lot of today's food has shrunk in size over the years and were paying more for it. I would sooner have the 1980s back then compared too today it was a lot simpler way of life back then even though there was mass unemployment.

Why would it be the same? It was last century. Do you honestly expect things to stand still? What you fail to mention about the 80s is the utter misery. Mass unemployment, AIDS, constant threat of nuclear war, riots, strikes. You're talking about the 80s with the naive eyes of a child, which suggests that what you really want is to be a child again. The 80s were actually pretty grim.

The 80s were pretty grim. When you had Thatcher in charge of the country what do you expect? Mass unemployment, miners strikes etc. And the only thing available for school leavers was a poxy YTS scheme which was just a ephemism for slave labour. Yes indeed the 80s were definitely grim from what I remember😂😂
