This album Darkness On The Edge Of Town is Springsteens ultimate masterpiece, filled with dark and beautiful songs like this one.
My favorite is his second album but I basically love all of his 7 first albums

One of the best concerts I've ever seen. The "BORN IN THE USA" tour.
3 hours long and the crowd never sat down once!!! I was on the field (Cleveland Municipal Stadium)about row #30.
Great show and great performer who really tries to give the crowd his all.
Hearing them play this in concert is a religious experience.

Though this song certainly has a universal message about overcoming strife, specifically it's about Springsteen's intense court battle with his ex-manager over rights to his music... hence the line, 'I'm caught in a crossfire that I don't understand.' It was a very dark period in his life, reflected in this tune and others on the album.

Springsteen catalog is huge ! Try exploring some U2 , another great band with a huge catalog of music.
His Catholic upbringing seems pretty evident in the lyrics- belief, love, hope, faith, praying and being saved.
