      That means your phone is no good anymore as all Smartphone batteries have what is called a Self Destruct circuit in them and after a few years this will activate to stop the battery getting unstable and will render the battery unable to charge meaning the phone would be completely unusable

But actually start wondering about your phone’s battery life just because you couldn’t finish your favorite show or a mission of your favorite game because of your phones battery life.Then your mind attracts those wild thoughts of improving phones battery by stuffing it with a bigger battery or use it while its charging , well come on we all consider these , but these are not the solution to our problem . • @Wooble57

    the 5v 4amp example was a bit of a poor choice, amp draw isn't dictated by the charger (other then perhaps a safety limit) it's dictated by the load, in this case the phone.
    If you hooked your phone to a 5v 100amp charger, it'd still only pull the current it's designed for (probably less then 2 amps)
    Typically when people are talking about fast charging, they are talking about higher voltage charging (yea i know, the phone steps it back down to a lower voltage to charge the single cell lithium battery, but that's not the point)
    The fast charger's are usually able to supply voltage higher then 5v, but won't do it unless the phone tells the charger it's ok to do so. The main benefit of using a higher charging voltage is that you don't need to use really thick cable's to charge your phone (wire size needed is dictated by amp draw, not voltage) Once your fast charging phone recieve's this higher voltage it step's it back down to around 5ish volts to charge the battery, but if it steps down from 10, or 20volts to 5, it can change the excess voltage into amps. That's what the watt's are all about, watts are used to describe how much total power a device uses. 20volts at 1 amp is 20 watts, so is 1volt at 20 amps.
    All sorts of electronics use this same technique to reduce wire size. Your CPU for instance probably runs on around 1.2 volts, but your power supply doesn't offer it 1.2v, it gives it 12v and there's little converter's directly beside the CPU that change the 12v supply into what your CPU needs (which is very high amperage, a 80wTDP chip is going to use around 60-70 amps) Because the high current only has to go from the converters to the CPU (which is right beside it) you don't need to use huge wires or giant pcb traces. Not only is this nice for packaging and looks reasons, it saves them a lot of money in reduced copper usage.

    Regarding last slow charging, it's nothing to do with power you supply, it's physics. At 90%, if maximum battery voltage is 4.3v, at this percentage, you are already reached 4.3V and you can't push more current, while when you have 3.5V, charger can push as much current as it can. This is called CC CV charging, at high percentage, it will become CV charging "constant voltage" and current will tapper off.

    For those of you plebs without said "fast charge" technology, you can charge your devices quicker than normal by doinga few things:
    1. enable power saving, if your os supports it.
    2. enable airplane mode, kill any wireless radios.
    3. for root users, change the CPU governer to "power saver".
    do this while you charge, and use your stock charger to gain about 1-2% per minute to charge. my S5 charges from 15% to 100% in about an hour this way.
    another option: turn the damn thing off while you charge it.

    Awesome video!
    I have to add that fast-charging in a lower battery charge (about maybe 0 % - 20 %) can eventually damage the battery a tiny little bit (works for all Li-Ion based batteries).
    But what kills your battery even faster ist not charging it in time. It gets permanently damaged as it reaches a lower level. In fact, Li-Ion based batteries live by charging and normal-use-discharging. The times of "you have to fully discharge your battery and fully charge it again" are over, this works for your NiMH and NiCd! This is why I recommend airplane mode at about 30 % until getting home (which should not occour a lot of times hopefully, and if it does: avoid it on your next phone/spare battery).
    Trust me, I´m a dark wizard,

The more expensive ones go all the way up to 2€, which is absurd. (2 years ago high octane fuel on a highway in Italy was 2€, normal one was 1.85€).

    @Techquickie can you explain the science/tech behind fast charging? It's well studied academically that most batteries, including the well-adapted Li-ion ones, fail a lot faster during faster charge-discharge cycles, or deeper cycles (e.g. from 100% to 0%) cycling it too fast also reduces capacity, and reduce energy conversion efficiency. So those fast charging we see on the market, do they use something like a supercap as a buffer? Charge supercap up quickly, then slowly charging up Li-ion from the supercap? Thanks.

    My phone uses bursts to quick charge. The phone will monitor temperature, the power delivery, communicate with the charger and for ten minutes crank up to 30W charge mode. Once the phone gets too warm or the power being pulled from was wall stutters, my phone tells the charger to hold back.
    I can go from 5% to 32% in 20 minutes. If My phone stays at a constant safe temperature, burst charge stays on for 15 minutes making the 5% to 32% charge take 14 minutes. In some situations where the temperature in the room is cooler, my phone burst charges to 60% in 25 minutes.
    Only downfall is that I need an expensive type c cable and 30w charger for my phone to quick charge. The plug alone is £36.99. The cable is £18.99.

    • @ColinRies
      @ColinRies 7 років тому

      Vinxian1 sure, but according to the video, the battery itself produces the heat (being a chemist, I can say this makes sense) and not the circuitry around it...

    • @Vinxian1
      @Vinxian1 7 років тому

      I have to say that I'm suprised it only reaches 30C, even without the the power circuitry.
      But the circuitry is responsible for a lot of the heat, the circuitry is not 100% efficient. Therefore it dissipates power. And that in turn generates heat. especially since the circuitry is in a closed environment

    • @ColinRies
      @ColinRies 7 років тому +2

      Vinxian1 that's true, but really, I thought the battery alone was responsible for the majority of the heat output. 30C is when it's not used while charging though. It's a little hotter when being used at the same time, but still miles aways from an iPhone or whatever

      because the heat production follows P=I^2*R (power= current squared times resistance). If the internal resistance of the battery is lower, it will output less heat at the same current.

    My suggestion to everyone looking to keep their phone's battery healthy is to use quickcharge only when you absolutely need it. If you are charging over night just use an old charger (like a 500mA one) to charge your phone. The battery will stay cool and won't degrade over time, and by morning you will have a fully charged phone. Ideally you need to keep your battery between 20%-80%, but most important is to never let your battery empty completely

      @marcuscoster6529 7 років тому +12

      vinno97 It doesn't matter because the public transportation is good and reaches basically everywhere. There's also not nearly as much space for having a car, the roads are smaller, population is denser (making smog have a worse effect). You could live in a lot more places in Europe and never need to own a car than you could in the U.S. My other point was, Americans almost certainly buy gas more often than Europeans. So overall there's not much benefit for us. Many people would be happier taking a bus or subway or bike everywhere if possible, for FAR less money per month.

    • @stokespen700
      @stokespen700 7 років тому +22

      Marcus Coster - You assume everyone lives in a built up area with great public transport which simply isn't the case. It is more densely populated but this just creates more traffic congestion as public transport isn't that great and costs a lot. Most people still need/want a car. The only time public transport works really well is in city centers which is probably the same in america but it's still expensive. If you complain about fuel prices in america why do so many of you drive v8's and v6's. There are smaller cars available but you don't buy them so to complain about fuel prices while driving inefficient cars is pretty stupid. In Europe most own 1l to 2l 4 cylinder cars, even the larger 4x4's tend to have a 4 cylinder larger capacity engine. They're not slow either yet much more economical and can be just as large to transport things.

    Li-Ion and Li-Po expand over there life from over temperature extremes as well as being held at fully charged or too low for too long, this is why on a design point of view, you should NEVER use a phone case that has the battery backup built in as this applies permanent power to the charger input of the device, if there is always 5 volts present the battery is never allowed to discharge (some moden battery management can allow charging to completely halt). Something to keep in mind is when a traditional charger for Li-Ion or LiPo gets the battery to 100% (4.20volts) basic physics steps in, the battery doesn't need the current, but the charger keeps going it pretty much just burns up that current as heat in the battery instead - further damaging it.

    • @stephensnell5707
      @stephensnell5707 2 місяці тому

      Actually modern Smartphone chargers cut the current entirely once the charging is done and won't allow anymore current to come through thus the Battery will be entirely protected

    You are wrong, the current limit is usually set to 1C charging. For example a 3000mAh battery should be charged at a maximum current of 3000mA or 3A. You can of course charge a Lithium Polymer or LiPo battery faster BUT you are limiting the life of your battery, meaning it can endure less cycles before the capacitance drop of your battery starts to impact performance. Though manufacturers can support this cause they expect you not to keep your mobile phone more than 2 years (for tablets it´s around 3 years and for laptops anywhere between 4 and 5 years). Now try and remember when you started noticing that the battery of your device is not lasting that long. Fast charging is convenient yes, you know what is more convenient though? Battery swapping like in digital cameras ;-)

    • @robywankenobi32
      @robywankenobi32 6 років тому

      The "charger" is in fact not even a charger per say, it is simply a USB power supply, the actual real battery charger is on the PCB inside the phone, ipad or laptop etc, However there are handshakes between the device and power supply in newer USB specifications that goes along the lines of "hey phone, USB power supply here - I'm only capable of delivering 1Amps @ 5 volts, so please don't go over over this as I might have to shutdown or I will become unstable and hot - the charger said" - so the phone listens to this basic coms designed into the USB power supply and limits its charge rate (current) into the Li-Ion / LiPo cell so as to not draw too much from the external supply. Have a read of this that lays out how the specification evolved from the first USB ports: www.maximintegrated.com/en/app-notes/index.mvp/id/4803
