SYNOPSIS : A journey that started out as a trip to watch her favorite singer, Dr. K.J. Yesudas, perform live at a concert in the village of Chembai, in Palakkad district of Kerala; led the filmmaker to new personal discoveries. The village of Chembai was found to be entirely musically gifted and even a layman enjoyed a classical karnatic music performance , just as a trained individual would. This quality was found to be attributed to the real gem of the villages Kottai and Chembai ,Padma Bhushan Shri Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagvathar, the Karnatic classical singer who wasn't merely an artiste, but was the man who valued the power of knowledge and music above all. This film is a collection of anecdotes recollected by the disciples of Shri Cembai , an attempt made by the filmmaker to learn about the man who has been the key inspiration behind the Chembai Parthasarathy Music Festival that has been going on for over 100 years now.

I was fortunate in attending the music concerts of alathur brothers,chembai bhgavathar,gnb,radhajayalakdhmi,semmangudi,somu,balamurali,puthucofe krishnamurty,neyyattinkara vasudevan,mj radhakrishan,omanakkutyy,parassalaponnammal,follewd by yesudas (didn't attend),jaya vijayan,rtcetc.from1959to1972 at punaluur ppm ganesh temple chaturty dsy as my father was employed in ppm &also myself from1973.
Chembai guru is my favorite, he is blessed with god🙏❤️

64 - 65 കാലം 4 - ആം ക്ലാസിൽ പഠിയ്ക്കുമ്പോൾ , അമ്മയോടൊപ്പം ഗുരുവായൂരിൽ ഏകാദശിയ്ക്ക് പോയപ്പോൾ കേട്ട ചെമ്പെ യുടെ കച്ചേരിയാണ് ഓർമ്മയിലെ ആദ്യ കച്ചേരി - എല്ലാ മാസവും തൊഴാറുണ്ടായിരുന്ന അമ്മ വൈശാഖത്തിൽ ഒരാഴ്ച്ചയെങ്കിലും തങ്ങും - ബാല്യവും അന്നത്തെ കച്ചേരി കളും ! എവിടേയോ ഒരു മധുരനൊമ്പരം -
I was fortunate in hearing his concert at my sge of 8 along with my parents in1960 at punalur paper mills ganesh temple during chaturi festival.only very few audience on that rainy day .chembais concert was excellent as per my late parents.ln the same temple yesudasd dung in 1969.
Nice documentary on my chembai thatha. My grandfather shri. A.V.Krishna iyer was chembai thatha's guru in sanskrit. My mother, sister have learned from chembai thatha. Yesudas(dasettan) used to come my house often to meet thatha when he stayed with us.

I was blown away by the direction and sense of narration achieved in such a short documentary. i think it gives the right amount of incentive and inquisitiveness to explore this legend for people like me who don't know anything about him. the film is very tightly wound up and I would love to explore this myself ..

This is such a beautifully made documentary. Congratulations. While there are indeed several positives to discuss about this video, i would recommend the makers to please be more careful while adding subtitles or while interpreting the interview segments. It would add a lot more value to your efforts and more importantly the views of the giants who have shared their experiences with you, that otherwise would be lost in translation. I am listing a few here.
1. Sri TVG's remark (12:41): He says, "In one concert he was accompanied by Palakkad Mani Iyer and Chowdiah and another Govindaraja Pillai and Murugabhoopathy". While the name Chowdiah has been omitted in the subtitle, that of Sri C S Murugabhoopathy has been wrongly interpreted as Gurubhoothi.
2. Karuna Cheyvanenthu Tamasam is sung in both Sriragam and Yadukula Kamboji. Chembai's version is the latter. It is wrongly mentioned as Sriragam.
3. Sri T V Gopalakrishnan mentions about Chembai's meeting with the Tiruvavadudurai Adheenam. (21:25- 22:52 ) Tiruvavaduthurai is a village/ town in Tamilnadu and also houses an important Saiva Mutt. The pontiff of this mutt is referred to as the Tiruvavaduthurai Adheenam (akin to matathipathi).
The subtitle continuously translates TVG's mention of the Adheenam as Tiruva Durai as if he is a person with Durai as his second name.
in the same section, TVG mentions about the Adheenam asking Chembai to sing a tiruppugazh. It is again wrongly cited as Tirukkural. Both are extremely different texts.
It is understandable that the makers might not be familiar with the names of these musicians or other personalities mentioned by the musicians appearing in the video. Therefore, wouldnt it be better if you could approach some one who is familiar with these details for guidance/ editing while adding the subtitles?
Otherwise, a very well made documentary. Had a lot of life in it.

Chembai was always tested by lord Krishna.once while singing during chaturthi day at Ganesh temple punalur paprmills punalur kollamdt.on rainy day,eeyal insects disturbed him &his accompanies.he then started singing karuna cheyvan enthu thamasam krishna...then sang asong wordhpping lord Krishna ,thaye yesoda onyhan..then all insects flew away..a miracle by lord Guruvayur appan..
