I don't know much of anything about Metal Gear, but this was enthralling and gave me a newfound understanding and respect for the artistry behind it. Excellent work, keep it up.
It's both an honour and a privilege to have you watch my little video. I've been supporting you on Patreon since you announced because you're genuinely one of the best writers I've come across. Thank you for watching and sharing, really appreciate you taking your time to do so!
@Shammy & Leonardo Da Sidci I just discovered both of you with this video, just like you discovered Metal Gear's artistry with this video, Shammy. :) I definitely recommend the series as a whole, especially if you're a writer, and a good one like Leonardo kindly said. It may have a few things retconned for storytelling, but overall the story arc is massive and full of emotional moments. I say emotional because of the wide range Kojima portrays, ranging from horrific to just plain goofy. I look forward to checking out both of your guys' content. :) Also, shameless plug, I'm getting ready to drop a Metal Gear video so hot, it'll melt the polar ice caps! lol, I hope they don't (they will if we keep shooting ourselves in the foot), but I hope the video does well. XD
Wow. I was not at all familiar with Yoji's work, and his style is absolutely stunning. As is this video. Gorgeous visuals match the superb writing and narration.
Thank you as always! I've been practising everyday for years and years to try and mimic his style, but I still can't get his elegance or accuracy. One day perhaps. Thank you again! This channel would still be in the 10's of views without your support
I won't lie, I'm becoming a cynical UA-cam viewer now and by the first 45 seconds I wasn't "feeling" this video. I scanned the comments section and saw Raycevik giving it praise. I resumed the video. Nae regrets.
Yoji's work over the years has just been consistently incredible and so art direction in games is so criminally underrated. Thank you for watching! Really appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment too!
He's my favorite artist and I want to be able to create stories using his art style, that's one of my greatest ambitions. Whenever I get the chance I'll shown his art to anyone interested in art and even some that aren't.
I had the pleasure of meeting Yoji Shinkawa, he signed my Shinkawa art book and was visibly surprised that someone had come with the intention of meeting him at an event where Kojima was also present. Super quiet but also super friendly and humble guy.
I felt like I was watching an extremely serious Metal Gear cutscene. This was very well done. Shinkawa has inspired me as an artist my entire life. How he can capture the pure essence of each character in such an abstract but perfectly constructed way is nothing short of incredible. Whenever I find my own style I hope it's half as beautiful as his.
I spent the better part of a semester writing a paper about Yoji Shinkawa and how he breaks ground in the world of art and culture. And... You and you're buttery voice just surmised all of it in seven minutes... Instantly subscribed. Thank you.
God, I'm so glad that so many people love his art work. If I had the money I would make a small art gallery dedicated just to Yoji. Love these videos, I am looking forward to what comes next.
This channel is incredible, it’s criminal that there are so few subscribers! However it is pretty awesome having caught Shammy’s video in the morning and seeing it grow from 7k to 12k subs in a matter of hours.
One of the first video games i was introduced to at the age of 5 was the original MGS on the playstation 1. It came with the demo disc accompanying the console it self. Although the game was to technical for me at the time, I would watch my dad play the 30 minute trial time and time again . Aside from the demeanor of the series, the one thing that has always stood out is the rich and unique art style which i first saw on the cover art of MGS at block buster. It will always bring with it the care free nostalgic ambiance of childhood.
I tried to talk about Shinkawa's work in my course, ended up getting laughed at by the teacher. I guess back then I didnt have the words to explain really the artistry behind his work. Three years later now I found your video. And damn man you inspired me to give it another try with some maturity and respect I learned over the years. Amazing work
Your Chanel is gold. It's really not often when I can find a Chanel I'd like to watch, but your voice, editing and visuals, your script and you yourself: everything is a miracle. Your videos is one of the kind. I feel good when I watch them, thank you.
To this day I regard the artwork of Yoji Shinkawa for MGS2 one of the most intriguing I have ever encountered. The work he did on Zone of the Enders was also stellar. With the concept art drawings of Batman Arkham City coming in as a close third.
The length of your piece was spot on for me. ZOE would warrant it's own episode anyway. Though it's pretty long ago that I played it, I still remember vividly how enamoured I was by it. The demo was the icing on the cake.
Once in a blue moon, you come by a video without jake paul in the title and are just trilled by the dialog, visuals, and editing! Thank you so much for that loved it very much! I am no critic and never will claim to be one so its hard for me to comment on things such as art, but dam I do have to say that it was crazy seeing that clip of him drawing that live. I do always love to learn about all these topics as it is still very interesting to how people put out their creativity, such as this video of yours.
Came from Shammy's channel. Big fan of the MGS series, Yoji Shinkawa's work is one of my earliest memories when I really began to fall in love with games as opposed to just a hobby.
Thanks for covering this. There always was something about the art of MG which really set it apart and fascinated me. I think there isn't a second series which has such a distinctive style.
There's so many subtle things you did with the editing and a lot of them I didn't even notice until watching this again. There's so many things you do well but the editing is always something I appreciate the most, and yours is fuego my dude.
Excellent shout on Yoshitaka Amano. I get a similiar feel from watching him sketch at various conventions. Instantly recognizable and oozes confidence.
A few years ago I picked up a PS2 and some games, I wanted to go back and play things I missed and also replay some old favorites. I was somewhat dismayed to find that a lot of games that people held in high regard for that era in gaming had not held up well in the art department. Not the metal Gear series though, they hold up quite fine. It stands out even more when you consider that those PS2 games that do still look good today usually focused on a stylized aesthetic over realism.
For some reason, the video's first frame froze but audio continued to play. All along, I thought it was just an intro and I was waiting for the screen to transition. Two(2) minutes on, I was still staring at the screen the I realized it it got stuck. Man, I was never bored that whole time! You have an amazing voice for narration! Just sipping water here, sitting, and I could imagine every bit of the video just listening to you. Amazing! :D
My favorite game artist is definitely Jen Zee, of Supergiant Games. All their games are beautifully crafted, and Pyre is the most visually amazing game I've ever seen.
+IrishBandit I absolutely love her work on Transistor. Her use of colour is just magnificent! I think the next time I do an art based video, it'll probably be on her work at Supergiant games
"I' no hero, never was, never will be" - Solid Snake ; ) I've got to admit that I'm not familiar with the name of Yoji Shinkawa and I love all the old Metal Gear games, bit sad isn't it, it's sort of like how you described the world of Art in general, films, drawings, paintings, people only really acknowledge the directors or the producers, not the writers of the actual source material. Wicked video and Yoji Shinkawa's art style is so cool, I've loved that since I was a kid.
My favorite game art... Dark Souls. I love fantasy, and to see it done how it is was one of my greatest joys as a gamer in my life, and I almost never fell in love with it. First time I played I got dumpstered by the first area but pulled through, just to get lost not knowing where to go at firelink shrine and eventually I gave up and didn't touch it for over six months. Eventually though, I got back into it, using the wiki to just find what way I was supposed to go, before long it was my favorite game of all time, and that atmosphere and world will never leave my memory, even if I quit them for so long that I suck all over again.
I have only ever really played a single MGS game but I always loved the art that was on the cover, you really shined a light on the creator for me and that's awesome. Fantastic video.
Tbh, I'd recommend watching a story recap video on the games if you weren't interested in playing them. Super Bunnyhop did a great longform analysis series on most of the games and they're a great way to learn more about this ridiculous series without having to play them.
Oh definitely snake eater. Mainly cos it delve into how big boss became big boss and the cobra unit was just amazing. The different emotions they brought with them made me feel some type of way whilst fighting them and then of course the game play and how you could utilize the different camo's to bring an entirely new meaning to stealth compared to the MGS 1 and 2.
I'm a huge fan of your work especially your recent video on Depression and Video Games! (I've watched it a handful of times.) And you somehow managed to one-up yourself with this new Sidcourse! The video is informative, concise but also visually impressive. This "hobby" of yours is really panning out to be something special.
I'm so glad you enjoyed the show so far! I'm trying to keep it consistent while maintaining a busy schedule. Thank you for saying though, I appreciate that!
I truly believe Yoji Shinkawa is the one of if not the greatest artist of our time. His art is so expressive yet subtle and simple. Every stroke has a purpose but looks like it was done with ease. Truly outstanding
Your video left me with chills - I felt so captivated and all my love for the franchise and its creators was brought back instantaneously. You also have a great voice, I cannot wait for your next video.
Literally the man who got me into art let alone metal gear solid. Sumi-e is beautiful. My first ever drawing was snake and gray fox in mgs 1 and I started by shading the right side of his face...not with a nose or eyes or chin but a black smudge that was anatomical correct. Ps true heros of art and music never lose there edge because they don't fold to anyone's opinions and grow in their art naturally. Their love for art and music surpasses fame and money. Their souls have no price but to be expressed externally through a medium.
Something I feel TheGamingBrit really highlighted in his video on video game box-art was just how powerful Yoji Shinkawa's work used for the series box-art was (Something the US releases generally abandoned after Metal Gear Solid 2). When displaying the MGS 4 box art that was used in Europe (Apparently the UK as well, but I don't recall a GAME or Gamestation in my area that had them on display), the image of Old Snake with his Solid Eye shining red said so much about what the game had in store for the player, it was genuinely jaw-dropping! It was something Japan also used, but with less use of colour. Compared to "flabby CGI face" I ended up seeing on my local shelves and was chosen for North American distribution, it takes away so much just by putting a close-up face render (That's missing the Solid Eye, an important characteristic I will add) that I'd dare consider it insulting (And unfortunately, it seems to be not uncommon when it comes to North American Box-art, particularly for games imported there). I think it may very well have been until I found this video (If not HyperBitHero's "Your Next Favourite" on Zone of the Enders: The Second Runner) I was able to put a name to the artwork the Metal Gear Solid series has been given, but I'd have never needed to even know the name to know "This is their work" when gazing upon it & the artwork for Zone of the Enders that so deeply informed their highly definitive art-styles, and though you I can really appreciate just what & how makes his work as incredible as it is.
Metal Gear Solid 3. By far one of the best games I've played as a child. Still can't be believe how good this game was and still is. This MGS3 theme hits hard the nostalgia.
This is a great episode, I'm not a Metal Gear person myself but it's fantastic to see the work of a game artist highlighted, particularly one that sits under a shadow as overwhelming as Kojima. Also references to Beardsley, asides about over valuing detailed technique, and Ecce Homo jokes are all easy ways to my heart.
Thank you! The shadow of Kojima is a big one, but I'm glad that they have a good working relationship where their ridiculous stories and games come together! And I had to throw potato Jesus in their somwhere ;)
accidentally saw this and instantly fell in love. especially agree with your idea about nonheroism. One shall not be worshipped, yet can be accomplished and learnt from
And hey! I understand your struggle! I've been studying Shinkawa's style for many years too. Now, I have my own style. Which is heavily inspired by his art! Leonardo, follow me on instagram :D @vhwatsont
Always liked Shinkawa-san's artwork. I remember looking at his art for the boss when I played snake eater for the first time years ago. Knew it was something super special. as for my fave artist I gotta go with Chris Zembellis who designed Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the dragon. He nailed the style of both game series with their cartoony looks.
i was allways stunned by the artstyle... but never focused on it. only a fellow artist like you would give him the credit he deserves, the credit we neglected to give him.
Yes I agree. Shinkawas amazing skill is seen trough every gamecover and its just beautiful to look at. I wanted the art book of Metal Gear Rising in gamestop but they didn't have it sadly, still bought the game tough.
Great video! You summed it up pretty well. I also absolutely love Shinkawa's art and I find it to be a shame that for the last entries in the series they didn't make use of his incredible art style for the games' cover arts anymore (aside from some special editions), as his work lends itself perfectly for it.
"A Sideo Kojima production" - I love your work, mate. It's charming and full of glee despite the somber topics and overall tone. I hope you are doing well and will be making more videos in the future! Much love, Vladimir.
I would argue that the location as a unit is extremely important. Shadow moses for example represents Big boss's attempt to fulfill Boss's legacy. They could be replaced by other islands or locations, but they as a story unit is paramount.
"Stay sexy" is something I've ended all my personal videos on for years, kind of a tagline I guess? And the WHOOO is a good old joke from The Phantom Pain. I was dared to somehow throw that into the video somehow lol Glad you liked the video though :D
Part of Yoji Shinkawa's markings and painting skill is derived sumie calligraphy. Sumie is all about capturing the spirit of words/kanji. Hence, calligraphy is key to imitate his works.
While they weren't iconic enough for me to know their names, I immediately thought of the art designers for hotline miami, specifically niklas akerblad aka el huervo. With such a low-res art style in-game, he had a lot of freedom to be creative in his representation. The following is less related, but one animator I appreciate is Anthony Scheppard, who made the music video of "the music scene" by blockhead. The use of unnatural color by both artist seems reminiscent of fauvism and gives their work energy. Another music video Scheppard did, named "two against one" also blends physical representations and the idea behind them in a really interesting way. Worth checking out IMO
until this point i was not familiar with YOUR content, but thanks to shammy i "accidently" fell here...and i just need to say, that you are one of the most talented and dedicated youtubers i've ever seen, every one of your videos is hold to such standard and filled with such detail and care, that i am nothing but amazed that i haven't heard about you before. keep up the good work,im sure it'll pay off.
Great video, love the pace and editing style. I will say i feel like what was said at 3:21 does a great disservice to a lot of great artists more so than it does praising yoji, there's a wealth of people with distinct and incredible art styles creating currently, and although yoji is legendary having a distinct and iconic style currently is not something unique to him.
Informative and under 10 minutes? Where's the real Sid?! Seriously though, man, this was absolutely fantastic. Easily your best, IMO. Visually stunning and on a person who deserves more recognition. Great job!
Since i discovered Shinkawa's art he had become and influence for me,his ink for is simply amazing. But in more general terms my mayor influences come from Capcom's artist like Toru Nakayama for his sketchy work and the style in general, and Tatsuya Yoshikawa for his general stylization of everything,
I'm actually a huge fan of apocalyptic concept art. I love the idea of seeing a beautiful peice carved from the history of human mistakes. The events unfolding following the end times give way to excellent pieces. Creating beauty from destruction. The bittersweet art form, if you will. I'm not a huge art buff, so I wont begin to describe how lacking of quality or nuance I possess. That was a terrific video. Spoke volumes.

Surprised to see you here.

I won't lie, I'm becoming a cynical UA-cam viewer now and by the first 45 seconds I wasn't "feeling" this video. I scanned the comments section and saw Raycevik giving it praise.
I resumed the video. Nae regrets.
Woah I found Ray in the wild
I recommend playing the games too. Like really recommend.
This was great. I've always struggled to articulate exactly what is that draws me to Yoji Shinkawa's style but you did it really well. Great job!
God damn this is good
Thank you!
Can you review the other 2 stalker games and the metro games (☞ ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)☞
!
I had the pleasure of meeting Yoji Shinkawa, he signed my Shinkawa art book and was visibly surprised that someone had come with the intention of meeting him at an event where Kojima was also present. Super quiet but also super friendly and humble guy.
Art. Art has changed.
Starstreaker ah... I see what you did there.
But the scars left by the paint have not yet healed, and the canvas .. has not forgotten.
Why arewe still painting ?!
@@BigBoss-sm9xj just to suffer?
it's now a series of proxy commissions, people choosing to have others create their art instead of getting their own hands dirty.
The editing. Just.... The editing.
It's aite
I felt like I was watching an extremely serious Metal Gear cutscene. This was very well done. Shinkawa has inspired me as an artist my entire life. The thing that outstanded me the most was his use of a white out pen for art work I don't think I've ever seen that technique used!
God, I'm so glad that so many people love his art work. If I had the money I would make a small art gallery dedicated just to Yoji. Love these videos, I am looking forward to what comes next.
I would be the first to buy a ticket to that showing
This channel is incredible, it’s criminal that there are so few subscribers! However it is pretty awesome having caught Shammy’s video in the morning and seeing it grow from 7k to 12k subs in a matter of hours.

I'm trying my very best to draw like him, but he's too good at what he does. And this video spoke to my heart. Made me emotional watching this
I haven't seen any other game series that is packed so much with art. It's a joy for any artist.

The editing and overall flow of this video is so satisfying and I do love me some MGS appreciation. Really good job man.
Thank you :)
I thank God for Shammy introducing me to your channel man. This is truly awe-inspiring stuff. I love it.
Awesome . I love the art from yoshi shinkawa and the hole world of MGS

This video. This video is awesome. A shining example of what UA-cam content SHOULD look like, but is found very rarely.

Christ, man, I returned to this video for the first time in years and its quality hit me like a truck again.
Metal Gear Solid 3. By far one of the best games I've played as a child. Still can't be believe how good this game was and still is. This MGS3 theme hits hard the nostalgia.
2:56 fcking lol
Yeah boiii
"Indistinguishable from a photograph"
Fantastic video. I love how Shinkawa see's his vision in a "mess" but doesn't compromise.
I'm happy I was introduced to your content. thank you for this.
Yoji Shinkawa and Tetsuya Nomura are the best character concept artists in my opinion.
I am hyped for his upcoming work on Death Stranding and Left Alive.
Wow, the amount of production value in this video is insane, amazing dude keep it up!
accidentally saw this and instantly fell in love. especially agree with your idea about nonheroism. One shall not be worshipped, yet can be accomplished and learnt from
btw,sexy voice,keep it going
This video was a work of art in itself. So well done
5:30 And no one comes even close to Yoji Shinkawa perfection.
Your content is such a breath of fresh air, man.
OMG, THERE ARE SOME OF MY ART WORK IN THIS VIDEO :O
That DEATH STRANDING art and the other one below it at 5:32!!!
And hey! I understand your struggle! I've been studying Shinkawa's style for many years too.
Now, I have my own style. Which is heavily inspired by his art!
Leonardo, follow me on instagram :D @vhwatsont

This video is great! i am so glad because i actually have the legacy collection witch comes with an art book of Yoji Shinkawa's work!
I do hope that one day they re-release all the older games for the PS4 and all the art books!
Mother Base and Shadow Moses are also pretty important
I don't even play video games but for some reason I like hearing what you have to say about them
Tbh, I don't play enough games to warrant this channel! I may branch into something else in upcoming videos, just to keep things fresh
Great video! You summed it up pretty well. I also absolutely love Shinkawa's art and I find it to be a shame that for the last entries in the series they didn't make use of his incredible art style for the games' cover arts anymore (aside from some special editions), as his work lends itself perfectly for it.
Fantastic video. Yoji's talent is incredible.
"A Sideo Kojima production" - I love your work, mate. It's charming and full of glee despite the somber topics and overall tone. I hope you are doing well and will be making more videos in the future! Much love, Vladimir.
This is such good quality. Holy shit. You need more subscribers
Subscribers will come, but right now, I'm just glad people enjoy the videos :)
Thank you for telling me about this amazing artist
I would argue that the location as a unit is extremely important. Shadow moses for example represents Big boss's attempt to fulfill Boss's legacy. They could be replaced by other islands or locations, but they as a story unit is paramount.
I feel much the same
Yoji is an incredible artist
His style is unique and no one's touching him
Amazing video. I must say though, the 'stay sexy' and 'WHOO' caught me off-guard at the end, lol. Looking forward to Death Stranding!
"Stay sexy" is something I've ended all my personal videos on for years, kind of a tagline I guess? And the WHOOO is a good old joke from The Phantom Pain. I was dared to somehow throw that into the video somehow lol
Glad you liked the video though :D
Part of Yoji Shinkawa's markings and painting skill is derived sumie calligraphy. Sumie is all about capturing the spirit of words/kanji. Hence, calligraphy is key to imitate his works.
amazing video man! greatly appreciated
MY GOD
your editing
so good
Shammy sent me here, and I have a feeling I won't be leaving any time soon ;)
Excellent video.
Fantastic piece, Shinkawa is one of a kind.
His work is magnificent, and has been consistently for years!
awesome video, thanks for making this! you have great style and i love your voice and way of explaining things!
Yojis work and Akita toryiamas are definitely some of my favourite
what a blast recapture. thx for this. awesome work.
Thank you for watching!
until this point i was not familiar with YOUR content, but thanks to shammy i "accidently" fell here...and i just need to say, that you are one of the most talented and dedicated youtubers i've ever seen, every one of your videos is hold to such standard and filled with such detail and care, that i am nothing but amazed that i haven't heard about you before.
keep up the good work,im sure it'll pay off.
Man i got emotional watching this, great video!
Great job!
Thank you thank you!
Great vid man, really enjoyed it
I'm very happy that you did :)
Since i discovered Shinkawa's art he had become and influence for me,his ink for is simply amazing. But in more general terms my mayor influences come from Capcom's artist like Toru Nakayama for his sketchy work and the style in general, and Tatsuya Yoshikawa for his general stylization of everything,
Uuh. Those shivers I got when Snake Eater started to play.
THANK YOU! You're right that about Metal Gear Solid. The Art is one of the pure spirit of the game!
Yoji Shinkawa is unbelievable. I love his work. No one can do it like himself. I wish i could draw or paint in that quality 👍🏻🚀👍🏻🚀
That was such a well made video - subbed.
2:55 I love how you're talking about hyperrealism and then you show failed restoration picture of Jesus at the end xD
Hyper hypaa!
