Hi this is Marc, from the moment I started playing trombone I used two fingers on the mouthpiece. Somehow I felt this gave me the best balance of the horn. Lot of my students took over this way of holding the horn. I can not speak for Carl of course. I can only say playing with my hero was an incredible highlight in my career.
Please guys: don't forget to worship marc's playing. He was a young man back then and i think he has done a terrific job here .. standing next to an experienced giant like carl. and also thanks to marc for putting this video in high quality on youtube for us to enjoy!
Marc (that's me) is playing a silver plated King 2b in those days. Now I am endorsing the Michael Rath R10 trombone. I think Carl Fontana was playing a Vincent Bach 12 at that time.
bedankt voor de info, uit ervaring weet ik dat het of de mondstuk keuze veel belangrijker of toch even belangrijk is. welk mondstuk verkies jij als all rounder?
I played with Marc.. later on.... watched the show on television... played with him in Herbolzheimer's masterclass ban in Germany... Marc is from Belgium... great guy!!!!!
1987 Prime Time in National TV; this might be in the Netherlands but was common in Germany too. Then Cable an Satellite TV came and the stupidity of the Masses begun.
I dearly wish we could see some of the great instrumentalists of today on television. The talent IS OUT THERE! You can’t even get it on PBS in the US. It’s a crying shame! UA-cam is the only refuge
Great performance !! Does anyone know if there’s any reason that they both have their index finger covering their upper lip? Possibly a technique thing? Or is that just another way to hold the horn and they both just happen to do it ? thanks
Hello Marc -- Some beautiful music being made there by you and Frank. I love the old Kings -- I have a 2B Silver Sonic and 3B Silver Sonic. Are you sure yous was "silver plated," as the Silver Sonic are sterling? Bob
I just revisited my comment from five years ago, and once again saw the kind reply from Marc. I also saw that I referred to The Great Fontana as "Frank." I must have had Rosolino on my mind.
@tbonemarc It can't have been recorded in 2007. Carl died in 2003! It looks at least 20 years old to me. Carl looks well and Marc looks young - and he isn't playing a Rath trombone, which he has been doing for a while now.
Awesome video! thanks for the upload. However, sometimes I just want to see them play a fifth position or maybe a sixth (I geuss that is the classical trombonist in me :) and just on a side note why arent there any bad ass bass trombone improves like this?

Absolutely. I wish I'd known about these recordings years ago.

Got to play with a Carl one time…golf that is!
Do you happen to know what trombone Mr. Fontana is playing here? Thanks so much! I quite enjoyed your duet with him! So much to emulate here.
@@jacksongalaxyfangurl1237 I think it was a Bach 12
Whoops sorry I got mixed up between the horn and the mouthpiece! Thank you for answering my question. I appreciate it so much!
I love how carl keeps his reserve while playing; just like a conversation - so very natural!
Wonderful, both!
2 giants !
Marc clearly "stood on the shoulders of the giant, Carl", but man, he has his own beautiful voice. Cool find.
Carl at his very best! Excellent playing by both and wonderful orchestra.
Bob Adams
Two marvelous complementary soloists and an incredible band.
Yeah Carl, that lick he keeps playing is his tradmark. I love it, one of my favorite licks. Carl is the man!
The great Carl + Marc + orchestra show! They make sweet and effortless music together!
Crying!!!!! Rogier giving his best as well!!!! Ernöh Olah always super captain on the ship!
Sublime! What a find. I'm really digging Marc Godfroid.
My King Trombone was a 2B silver plated one indeed, no sterling, Marc
@tbonemarc
Hold up a second.... You're telling me you're Marc Godfroid and you played with Carl Fontana?!
I played with Marc.. later on.... watched the show on television... played with him in Herbolzheimer's masterclass ban in Germany... Marc is from Belgium... great guy!!!!!
beautiful, Fontana in perfect form, such an original, Godfroid hangs in too,
Marc, this is absolutely beautiful! One of my favorite songs to play and listen to. Two very distinct sounds between you and Carl.
This is the Metropole Orchestra. This was recorded in a television studio in Hilversum (Netherlands)
so smooth. seamless interaction. beautiful.
WOW - you both interplayed so well - great job Marc - Carl will not be forgotten.
Amazing! They both have very similar styles and both sound great
Great playing all around, solos and orchestra, sounds awesome
MAGNIFICENT....in musicianship, audio and video.
Beautiful clip - thanx so much for posting! You can really hear Carl's influence on Marc's playing!
Two great musicians
Carl Fontana, the best jazz trombonist!

Much better than my version 🎺🎶🎺👏
Great performance !!

Possibly a technique thing?
Or is that just another way to hold the horn and they both just happen to do it ?
thanks
great stuff. thanks for posting. No one could swing on trombone like Carl Fontana.
xlfutur1 ...waddabout JJ or Frank Rosolino? Slide Hampton? Aaight, now. Hal Crook? Or, or d-oh!

Damn! So good!
Bravo Maestro
@KBChuck Thanks!
maravilha!!!
@tbonemarc It says in the write up 1987. It can't have been 2007 as Carl died in 2003.
Quality stuff!
Do someone know where can we see the rest of the show? It sounds great, incredible trombonists
Awesome video! thanks for the upload. However, sometimes I just want to see them play a fifth position or maybe a sixth (I geuss that is the classical trombonist in me :) and just on a side note why arent there any bad ass bass trombone improves like this?
For jazz...only the 1th to4th position count...
answer: It is impossible to do that on a bass. Reichenbach got pretty Close though.
@SuperTB4
Check out Bill Reichenbach. He's a bad ass bass bonist who does some soloing.
Know him since Toshiko ///////akiyoshi he played lead there..
Yeow!
Pretty good ! Where was this and who is that band. , pls ? Enjoyed and thanks !!
yes, CF is the best.
effortless command!
@cambuma2 2007
can you please tell me what year this was recorded? thanks
That was either a random shot of an audience or they had no idea or appreciation of what they just heard.
putain la trombona e bomba wow 😁👍👌 fontana is king
What kind of trombones are they using?
so the kid is on a 2B?
king*
for all these presentations of great musicians the producers just hired anybody off the street to be the cameraman. Ufff, pathetic
