- The full story of the shipwreck of the VOC Returnship "The Batavia" in Australia
In 1628, the largest Dutch United East India Company's Returnship, 'The Batavia,' on her way to Batavia, crashed on the Houtman Abrolhos Islands, off the coast of Western Australia.
Help was underway, but Under Merchant Jeronimus Cornelisz plotted to take over any rescue ship once it arrived and go pirating. He ordered the deaths of anyone who could ruin their plans. One group of survivors was led by soldier Wiebbe Hayes, who intended to defend themselves tooth and nail against attacks from the Under Merchant.

I did NOT expect to binge watch a 4 hours documentary of a ship wreck I havent even heard before, but here we are.
Awesome job, Im surprised this doesnt have more views, but I suppose not everyone is up to watch such a long video. Its their loss
Thanks for watching!
Ditto! It's 2am,and here I am... 😊 Great series, brilliant detail. Haven't so utterly hated and despised such savage and evil men so much in a loooong time. Never has a mutineer deserved hell more than Jeronimus. Ugh.
Same. This was absolutely captivating.
me too 🥲
Ditto.
Though initially startled by the very modern phraseology in the narration, I have to admit it worked!
Its success was due in large part to the narrator's humour and splendidly impish intonation. Her mercilessly authentic pronunciation of Dutch names was a constant delight.
This whole series has been captivating. Absolutely splendid job. Many thanks.
I am extremely confused how this series does not have millions of views. This is higher quality content than 99% of the crap on UA-cam. This just goes to show how broken UA-cam really is and how it does not really provide much useful value to humanity. A little girl putting on makeup has 2 million subs and millions of views, but something of real historical value that everyone should learn from has 4.1k subs and 15K views? UA-cam is just as bat sht insane as the mutineers.
Really man the content is so top notch idk why UA-cam isn't promoting it
What this series and the Kursk series have that no amount of make up videos have, is longevity. For the foreseeable future, anyone wanting an in depth factual explanation on these subjects will end up spending 5 hours watching these. My family laughed and said I had lost my mind when I said I was going to start watching a 20 plus hours documentary on "the 80 years war".
This documentary was fantastic. I enjoyed your little bits of humor and the extensive detail. Please continue doing more! You deserve to have millions of viewers and subscribers!
I didn't care for the 'humor", but very good overall. Great to hear the pronunciation and see the pictures of the players.
This has to be the most comprehensive documentary on the subject of the Batavia I have ever encountered. I sincerely thank you for this fantastic piece of history!
I'm a documentary nut. I love watching them and I must say this is one of the best I've seen. Very well done. It is very well organized, the art work is well done and the narration is excellent. I could not find the name of the person that narrated but That person should be commended. The narration kept the story interesting even though the lack a visuals could have made it quite boring. Kudos to all involved.
Wow, thank you!
I've seen the wreck of the Batavia in her museum in Freemantle. It is chilling to think that wreck had such a story behind her that I had no idea of at the time.
Fair dinkem brilliant...I'm ex Aus navy and love naval history.. I've read this story b4..but these 4 videos we're so comprehensive I couldn't stop watching..thank you so much..f@+$ing awesome!!!..blown away.. excellent 👍😁👍
Thank you for your service! Glad to hear you enjoyed it.
Holy crap, this was a good series. Slow start but goddamn that was a good finish
I can’t believe I just stumbled on this channel last night. I had no idea what I was missing all these years. I binged this series over the last 10 hours (fell asleep at 3 am with 15 min left that I instantly watched when I woke up) and plan to watch the other two series ASAP. These all have criminally low views and hopefully the algorithm is starting to work its magic so many others find this channel soon like myself. I’m off to start the Kursk series now. Keep up the amazing work.
Thank you for posting these, very informative. I read a book called 'Islands of angry ghosts' about 10 years ago, while I was on a boat at Houtman's Abrolhos Islands, which told the story. I visited all these Islands, I spent a long time walking and contemplating what had happened on these pieces of land. Except for Haye's Island, they are all just flat, covered in broken coral, a few bushes and the skeletons of birds and seals. It is amazing that people survived there at all, but such unnecessary tragedy and evilness is beyond me. Very eerie places. Very sad story. I did get to play with the seals and collected shells and feathers from all the 'haunted' Islands. There were no memorials, but some of the 'forts' survive... I thought about this series again today, came back to watch a second time. I don't know why. I do know that you have put a lot of work into this and much more detail than I had previously read, Thank You so much. And maybe, having been there it has effected me. Also my Father is from Het Nederlands, while I am Australian, so it is in my DNA or something... I was crewing on a luxury 75 foot motor yacht, cooking, cleaning, and spending all my free time on these Islands. I still have a seal leg bone, bleached and smooth from the sun and the sea, I stood where I think the gallows were, I didn't know the version that you have told, the book I read was by one of the modern divers who explored the wreck, and then his research into the tale. So some perspectives were different. The sea birds at the Abrolhos are amazing, the reefs are quite pristine, the area has been over fished and so the majority of fish to catch are Herring. So be it, I never failed to provide the guests with fresh Herring at Breakfast, because I myself grew up on Boats. Rottnest Island as a child was my playground, another place of angry ghosts. I would love it if you could work on a doco on Rottnest Island... It was a sacred place and then a prison and a graveyard, a look out during WW2, a place of family fun during the 80's and now a millionaire's playground. It was also named by a "Dutchman' Willem de Vlamingh.
I wish I could have gone there, but with the virus it wasn't possible. Hopefully in the future.
Thank you so much for this. You made it modern and accessible without losing the historical veracity. I binged watch it all in one go and my only regret is that I don't get to listen to it for the first time.
Thanks for watching!
Dear Defragged,
This series has been one of the best historical videos i have ever watched/listened to either here on youtube or even on tv and video.
I was gripped by the narration the visuals and the "script". I am amazed at how much detail you include in the story and im staggered that you can tell it all without a single minute sounding boring or irrelevant. I was constantly amused by the narrators humour and i loved listening to her voice.
To me this series is a masterpiece of history storytelling.
When you consider the tragedy of this history it is perhaps fitting that it has been served so well by such a good series of videos.
Thankyou so much for making this and putting it on youtube. thankyou thankyou.
I am a descendant of the Dutch settlers in the new world. My family goes back to New Amsterdam and the wall that was constructed in Manhattan. My wife is Indonesian and this story of the VOC and the wreckage of the Batavia has captivated me.
Thanks for this. I've seen the story of the Batavia elsewhere in UA-cam but never heard it gone into such detail. I'm glad you addressed some points about why, the long boat didn't go back to the islands like they said, whether Pelsaert was exaggerating anything, the group on the other islands, etc. This was about as detailed breakdown as one could want.
My exact thoughts and thank yous.
This was an amazing series, I can't imagine the time and dedication it took to make this. I couldn't help but watch it in one sitting, and I hope many more viewers find it
Absolutely loved this series, just watched all 4 today. Wonderful presentation and fascinating info, well done.
Wow. All in one day? Thanks!
@@DefraggedHistory absolutely. I was hooked. The way you presented the story was captivating.
My sister gave me a documentary booklet about the Batavia in 1974 or so. Then in 1985 I stumbled across the remains of the Batavia in the Fremantle museum and, lo and behold, when I returned to the Netherlands, they had just started the project of building a replica of the Batavia in Lelystad! I visited the construction site many times and was happy to hear that the ship actually visited Australia.
In 1976 I fished for prawn in the Gulf of Carpentaria and was impressed with all the Dutch names there: Arnhem's Land, Van Diemen's Land, Cape Keerweer, etcetera. Few people know the Duyfken was the first western ship to visit the then unknown Southland.
Anyway, I watched part one of the series and then could not stop until I had watched all four episodes. And as someone else already remarked, so refreshing to hear the names of the Dutch persons being pronounced properly. A great series and extremely informative.
The detail of this documentary is great. It shows how normal people given a moral dilemma will act. The "butch" maid of the preacher being the brave one to swim out to the ship for water. The second surgeon, Aris Jansz, refusing to join the mutineers to save his own skin. Webbie Hayes gets all the credit for being a hero, but he was lucky to be separated from the forced choice to kill or be killed.
I do also think that the times were very different. I read a research paper the other day about how people in these centuries felt much more solidarity with each other than we do today. They had few distractions and most were simply surviving daily life.
Thank you so so much for this I spent all night watching this series it's now 5 am but I don't regret it one bit
Amazing story telling the images you've chosen and the editing are just perfect, the writing is also amazing, everything is good I can't think of anything negative to say even the sound balance is great not too loud music like in so many videos
Never got bored one second which is rare with me
Really happy I've found this channel never hit the subscribe bell as fast as I did
Congratulations for this great work can't wait to watch the other videos
Cheers from France !
A 12 episodes series like the Terror in the making. Even better.
Oh that series is so good
What an absolute masterpiece of a series - so so enjoyable!
That was the BEST narration I have ever heard !!!!! Absolutely captivating and never boring. Hats off to whoever she was.
Yes who is she. Obviously Dutch by her pronunciation of Dutch but a perfect command of English
Amazing story, i really enjoyed the 4 parts, great work 👍👍
This really is one of the most complete documentaries I've watched. I've watched quite a few history videos or documentaries and it always feel like there is something missing. The amount of background information given really ties it all together. You deserve so many more subscribers.
What a fantastic series! Deserves to be seen much more widely. Thank you for making it and bringing this incredible story to life.
Thank you for taking the time to pull together such an epic retelling of a grim but intriguing part of history. I devoured the series in two sittings!
Thank you for watching!
Think we need more stories about these. Especially during those years...on ships
Absolutely incredible. I'll be sure to visit the Batavia replica soon; I had no idea such an incredible part of history was so close to home :D
Also screw the mutineers, good that the VOC punished almost all of them
Fantastic, brilliant narrator , with a sense of humour , her pronunciation of Dutch names etc was a delight.
Glad you enjoyed it
This is amazing! Thank you for such detail! I listened to the Casefile episode on this and wanted way more detail. You delivered! Excellent series!
I just watched the whole 4 hours. One of the best things Ive ever watched. This should be on TV and I think it should be used in schools. What an important piece of history. Ive been to Australia several times an last time I visited Uluru known as Ayers rock but next time if I get a chance I must research and visit the islands of the Batavia shipwreck. Thank you for an excellent documentary. You did an astounding job and I shall be showing this to my friends when I get a chance. God bless you.
Enjoyed all four episodes! Remember the story of Johan de Wit and his brother.Cruel people those Dutchmen.
Thank you. De Witt brothers story is coming. They were from my hometown.
What should happen to all republicans
I just read the novel The Night Ship. I had never heard of this event. I found and binge listened to this entire series. Just incredible! A terrific narration of an amazing story. A sad commentary on humanity.
Best series I've ever seen.
Thank you so much. This was an absolutely brilliant documentary. I have recommended both this and the documentary on The Kursk to my Dad was was in the Navy for a number of years.
Thank you for your kind words. Thank your dad for his service.
"So...What's up?" - Awkward. You're killing me!!
Just wow... Juranimus. Was a wicked bastard
Thank you for this. I first heard about The Batavia through a podcast. I then read a book about it. Finally a good documentary. This is so well done. I’m surprised this story hasn’t been made into a movie yet.
Glad you enjoyed it! They've been trying to make a movie, but no luck yet.
Absolutely brilliant effort to tell this story. One of the best if not the best I've ever seen and I've seen a lot. I can't praise you enough!
Wow, thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for this. It's very rare to find such an engaging and well crafted UA-cam doc. 4 hrs without a break and I never got bored or lost track of the story. I thought the music was going to put me off, but I forgot it was playing after a few minutes. I especially appreciated the use of images to represent each person in the story. Even though they mostly weren't the actual likenesses, it made the huge cast of characters memorable, and I didn't spend 4 hrs thinking "who was he again?"
Thank you so very much for this 4 part series. The story was extremely well told, very detailed and superbly crafted. Most excellent!
After watching the video I enjoy reading the comments.
I'm absolutely dumbfounded that people seem to have bingewatched these four videos.
I literally have to mentally prepare before watching one of these videos, and sort of recover afterwards.
Yes, the cliffhangers always make me long for the next video, but as they say: anticipation is half the fun.
I too am baffled by the binge watch situation, I couldn't stand to hear my voice for that long. But it does help the algorithm. 😉
Such an excellent series , thank you.So full of details and all delivered in a quirky and engaging narration that never stalled throughout. I hope you are not put off by the comparatively low views , you have talent which people out here certainly appreciate.
As a retired M.A. in history who has pondered creating historical videos, I would like to thank you for pushing me over the edge. This was excellent.👍
Awesome. Keep me posted on your new project
An amazing story, told in the right amount of detail; and the follow-up information was welcome, too.
It's incredible how one peculiarly warped mind can find companions amongst the group it is isolated with (Pesaert (have I spelled that correctly?!) on the Batavia voyaging out to the Indies) and then that that mind can influence so many others, to the point of making murderers of them. We humans are a strange race...
I shall be looking at this channel's other video series, as this one was so good. Thank you for making these programmes!
No it was Jeronimus.....not Pelsaert.....how could you watch this and get the culprit so wrong? LOL Did you even watch the videos?
@@jokers7890 I get confused easily these days!
I don't understand why this channel doesnt have way more subs. Bravo, this is fine content!
Thank you. I watched all 4 episodes. As a historian of naval history. Job well done
This was fantastic! Loved every minute of this thrilling story. Of course, horrendous situation, but the delivery was great.
It also proved another point: Dutch is not a language but a throat disease.
Just to add that all Australian Shipwrecks including treasure and artefacts are protected under the Underwater Cultural Heritage Act of 2018. It supersedes the Historic Shipwrecks Act of 1976. Hopefully, if these items are not in a museum, they can rest in peace. I also know that the Australian Government returned a number of Batavia artefacts to the Dutch as part of a joint archaeological excavation of Batavia's Graveyard.
As far as I know, they recovered pretty much everything. I read the very extensive recovery effort report, quite interesting stuff.
A lot of the silver was stolen from the Zuytdorp wreck though using explosives too! so the damage was massive to the wreck as well. Different wreck and different story but sad to know it was looted original reports said it was a carpet of silver
I’ve learned to love history watching your videos. Wonderful job! Entertaining and super informative. Thank you.
Good or bad, ugly or beautiful, rich or poor, they are all equal now.
Thanks for the interesting series.
Incredible! I'll be binging everything on this channel now. Casefile brought me here
This storytelling kept me here to the bitter end ! Suffice to say it was a great series and well narrated too!! Everything from the portraits animation changing whenever a new person was mentioned to the authentic Dutch probounciation, really brought this documentary to life !! Thank you for this !
I read quite a few books on the Batavia and really enjoyed your series a lot. Thanks for making it! Donated.
Thank you very much for the story. I covered all the episodes. It is a very sad story in deed
Greater than Pirates of the Caribbean.
History tales have better stories than fiction tales.
Thank you for this documentary. I am genuinelly horrified. If the scenes of horror were more gruesomely presented, I wouldn't be able te sleep tonight.
Impressive story. Good job on the series!
Best ship story, ever. Very well done and thank you!
Compelling tradgedy . Excellent job with this series .
Ha, I visited the Batavia rebuild when it was still under construction. It was maybe half finished. 13 year old me enjoyed the tour.
Would love to hear more about the history of the VOC!
Did it in one day. Great series. Could made a great horror movie / thriller.
Commendations for making a confusing story come to life.
Well done.
Very well done. This channel deserves many more subscribers and views.
What a story! And what a great way to tell it. I enjoyed this immensely.
xcellent! I binged watched it
The part of this story i find the most interesting is actually Lucretia herself! She was sexually assaulted on the ship as part of the mutiny attempt, was forced to be Jeronimus' concubine for the duration of their stay on Batavia's Graveyard, was tortured on suspicion of collusion with the mutineers, and after all that, learned that her husband that she went on the trip to see, had already died in Burma. And yet, after all of that, she seemed to have come out the most fortunate out of everyone involved, living the longest of any other notable survivors... what an amazing woman.
Though, there is something i'm wondering about: her wikipedia page says that she died circa 1641, which contradicts what you said in the video of her surviving until 1681 to be 71 years of age. Furthermore, the Wikipedia article also states she was born circa 1602, which also contradicts her stated age in the video. Which of the references listed on your website did you use for Lucretia's information? i'm curious to see which of the sources is more credible.
Either way, the video is still one of the best and most exhaustive tellings of the story out there, and i'm surprised the story isn't more popular! Thanks for making the video!
(side note, if the information in the video is correct, then Lucretia Jans would've been _18_ during the events of the crash, which makes her perseverance throughout the whole ordeal even more impressive!)
Excellent. I have an interest in ships and the sea. I too binge watched Batavia. I am now reading The Brothel of the Sea.
Of all the masses of information I have read, and documentaries I have watched, on the subject of the wreck of the Batavia, this is by far the best. The narrator is brilliant - the slight Dutch accent brings the story to life, and some of the facts presented even I did not know - and I’ve been an avid student of this shipwreck for over 40 years!
This entire channel brings history to life in a very detailed and understandable way that draws the audience into the story and compels them to follow it through. I’ve taken to playing the audio through the car stereo on my way to and from work, the stories fascinating and well told.
I cannot wait until another subject gets the Defragged History treatment.
That's very sweet of you to say. Thank you for watching!
wild tale, brilliantly told.
That was awesome! 😃
Loved this series!
Jij bent een Topper
Love this series, and what a fking crossover of Dutch, the natives, Tyne Chinese and the Japanese all fighting in the same battle, shame I couldn’t find more about this siege online, would have loved to find out more
fabulous
This just keeps getting better. 👍
Excellent work
wow. more please.
better teacher than i ever had.
Amazing job on this.
I am enthralled. I have shared this with so many people 😂 exceptional work 👏
Thanks
You, my friend, are a legend👍🏾
Great presentation!
This was great, thank you for your work
Great documentary!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge
Loved your work! Brilliant! Cornelius had a witness on his Bankruptcy that was a close friend to torentous… don’t know how to spell it. But that leads more into him being a follower of the painter.
Awesome documentary, can't believe it hasn't gotten the recognition it deserves
Insane how good this is, was looking for another shipwreck survival story but have just spent the whole of today watching this series!!!
This is what youtube is made for ❤
very detailed and thoroughly well done.
a compelling yet harrowing and extremely well presented documentary series. 👍👍👍
Many thanks!
Wauw, such a captivating documentary! I never knew the whole story or the extend of the horrors comitted. All this after beeing at sea for months to be stranded and seeing all the capable officers leave. To be a witness of misused power, fear and murder of women and children :O I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. Well done!
Well-done 👍
Fantastic
Captivating presentation --Well done!
