I have been listening to this every night as i fall asleep. Don't come for me, folks; there are reasons. And also, as i have said before, they get the watch-time no matter when we all listen to it. I have listened to other channels specifically designed to discuss hostory or mythogy to help people to sleep but nothing helps me as much as Mythillogical. When i'm having a particularly bad night, i go back to my old favorite, bigfoot one and two and it always helps. Because i listen to these podcasts so much, i've noticed changes, all good, but i wanted to mention in regards to Crofty. Crofty has just gotten so much more confident in these more recent episodes. It's so awesome to hear his more confident tone and his self-assuredness to say things like "i'm going to cover that in the next paragraph," or offer a pronunciation correction without an apology in his voice for interrupting. Crofty, my hat's off to you. I'm glad you were able to continue with this podcast no matter where on the globe you've been. I look forward to listening to more of these with your contribution.
By the time Pandora managed to close the lid , there was only one thing remaining inside , HOPE , it was to be Zeus's greatest punishment , for with hope men will cling on to their lives through all adversity ensuring they enjoyed the hardships that now burdened them for the rest of time .
I was falling asleep to this episode when you made the "you know who else..." plug and it jolted me awake because I thought Behind the Bastards had started playing Glad to find another fan of Podcast Jesus.
Lads, this is a top shelf episode! My grandma was named Elpis, my grandfather was Dionysus and one of my dogs is Persephone. I've listened to it twice so far.
I kind of like how all these horrible things are in the jar but so is Hope, because it bring up a lot more interesting possible interpretations including my favorite: Zeus being such an out of touch dingus he believes Hope is also some sort of scourge to unleash upon humanity
Ya got to think of it theatrically, though. Having the last one popping on out only to do the big switch-a-roo ... the crowd would have gone nuts ... The Prestige
The most evil business models use hope as a carrot the employees can never catch. They work themselves into the ground competing against each other because they were sold the hope of a better parking space. Selling the hope of an afterlife / clear skin / red light therapy is how all scams work. Hope is something to be cautious of.
Dan Carlin brought me to The Rest Is History which brought me to you two delightful darlings. So there's that. Carry on, being your endearing, engaging selves. Love from your upstart cousin across the pond.
love to listen while i’m painting. i’m a novice for sure, but inspired by mythology, and listening to your well researched and interesting podcast is wonderful. one of my first paintings was baba yaga themed bc of y’all! thanks for the episode
I always interpreted hope being in the box as the gods seeing hope as a thing that keeps humans somewhat content while in a state of suffering, not seeing it for what it really can be
I am glad we have podcasters these days willing to go out and speak their minds. I respect that endorsement of big chests, few others would have the guts to say the same.
Isn't there also a version in which Hephaistos forges Pandora out of metal? Maybe I got that mixed up with Fritz Lang's interpretation of her being the first robot/android. 😅
OH! do Napi! the Blackfoot Confederiacy's creator/laughingstock/saviour/mediator/protector/enemy/guide ov humanity! Napi is the reason Coyote smiles when you see Him! He knows a good joke just hasn't thought ov how it ends yet!
Hesiod was indeed apparently making up at least part of what he wrote. After all, he explicitly stated that it all came to him in divinely inspired dreams. There is not even a pretence that his stories are merely written versions of contemporaneous beliefs.
@RangerGucci Sorry to disappoint you, but no, I'm not. Just thought I might help with your confusion around the name as an Englishman. I have literally never met a male with the surname Croft who is not known by one and all as 'Crofty'.
zeus is not to be beat by heracles, the son that will be stronger than his father is aquiles, in Aeschylus's plays (there are suposedly 3), in the first is prometeus bound, in the second is prometeus unbound, where heracles frees him, and in the third, suposedly prometeus warns zeus that he should not sleep with the future mother of aquiles, for that child will be stronger than his father, he instead gives the woman to aquiles father and aquiles is born as the strongest greek.
I believe It’s a story about a woman losing her virginity to a man she’s not married to and all these problems happen after. And the only thing being left is hope that he will be with her. It’s a tragic story. So many myths have many interpretations and truths to them. Some of them can be so brutal as well. But they’re so we don’t make the same mistakes.
I don't see why this issue with Hope is confusing. While things are in the jar, they don't affect humans. That occurs when they are out of the jar. It transpired that *only* the bad things escaped the jar, and the one good thing stayed in. Ergo, humans have a the bad stuff without the one good one: hope. To me, that seems entirely consistent with Zeus' vindictive plan. All that said I am hardly in a position to dismiss other interpretations of the overall story. And let us not forget that while Hesiod had one view of the matter, that doesn't mean that others in antiquity did not have different interpretations themselves. Therefore, there is no correct interpretation. After all, as noted somewhere in this video there are multiple different versions of Greek myths, and looking for the definitive 'real' one, is a pointless cause Re Hesiod's rather scathing critique of women around the 53:00 mark.. I read the work several years ago, and was also so struck by those lines, that I copied them and showed / discussed them with a couple of interested parties. It may well be that 'the man in the street' at the time typically felt that way, but it certainly doesn't pull any punches.
The Cold War and Pandora's Box... That has other meaning for me: I always say that the US opened Pandora's Box to win the Cold War. They unleashed Islamism against the USSR in Afghanistan, which came back to bite them, they supported right-wing extremism across Europe (on both sides of the Iron Curtain), juntas in Latin America, etc.. That is why the world is how it is today. It's the debt we all pay for the price the US was willing to accept for the defeat of the Soviets.
@@strictlyunreal I believe you're being too US centric. 1.) Russia invaded Afghanistan on their own initiative (wanting a more compliant government back, they were close by, resources, thought they could, etc.). Was it to thwart a pending US backed move against the USSR? Absolutely not. We eventually did aid the Afghans who were then able to push the Russians back out of their country. There were definitely Islamic elements, including a group of foreign fighters lead by an out of favor Saudi prince, Osama bin Laden (he was one of hundreds of princes) but not all of the fighters were Islamists, possibly not even a majority of the them. Islamists filled the power vacuum tho. bin Laden, high on the somewhat delusional belief that he and the Islamist cause had defeated one super power, then took it on himself to go after the next super power (us). Certainly not our idea, we were barely paying attention to him. Meanwhile, back around the start time of the Russian invasion, Iranians overthrew the Shah, and Saudi Arabia royalty had made an alliance with their hard core religious leaders. You can spread Wahhabism anywhere you like (here's some money for that) as long as you support the Royal family. That's all a part of how we got to where we are today. Was the US involved? Sure, so was the other major power, the USSR. Was it in our interest? Sometimes it was, sometimes it wasn't. Sometimes we just tried to make the best of a bad situation. There were always unintended consequences. Hard to say if they were mostly bad or not. Human nature dictates that 99% of the time, we only remember the bad calls. Was this all part of a "master US plan"? The only reason this isn't completely absurd is because so many people think it is true or may be true-ish. Factually absurd but you still have to deal with those with this mindset. Was it karma for all we've ever done? More like we're living in a world where good and bad stuff happens. America took an active role in the world and I argue that was a net positive The Cold War never grew hot, standards of living have vastly improved, etc. Was it perfect? Nope. It never is. If you want to say it's the the US's fault it wasn't perfect and that failing makes us bad? That's up to you. I probably can't talk you out of thinking it.
I always find myself thinking that, i would like it if there was a link in the description to the part of the video where you guys stop bantering and start actually talking about the legend

I love this discussive type of informational video, It reminds me of my young private highschool times, when I learne latin and Greek history.

Hope as a curse is a pretty classic example of irony.
Suffering is a side effect of hope

Imposing Desperation and then offering Hope, then taking it a way, is the surest way to break a spirit.

I am way too excited to watch another mythology video, but gosh I love watching yall!
I've been waiting for this one. Thank you.
34:50 just a small nit pick.
according to the Torah Adam was created from dirt not dust.
Dirt is עפר
dust is אבק
Yes!
And Islam was "Mud & Clay"
YESSSS ITS FINALLY OUT. LETS FUCKING GOOOOO
Yay! New Mythological drop. You guys are the best.
What has 2 thumbs and is going to sleep great tonight? This guy!
i’d love an episode on harpies
Hope balances things out. More than once, Zeus talks about balancing things out, so that's how I interpret hope being mixed in.
1:06:49 The best Capitalism Break segue. Call my humor immature, but they broke out in laughter too!
this channel is sssooooooooo underrated
I never thought I’d hear a behind the bastards reference, especially in a mythology podcast

next topic is the "Loch" Ness Monster? That one is under a Loch right?!?
yooo the dream team is back in action!
Listend to the Podcast. A wounderfull episode.

"We're gonna have to talk about 18th century engineering'
Oh, like the steam engine?
"The invention of the wheel"
Something this long and wandering really needs chapters.

1:20:30 Curiosity cures anxiety. Ask Hermes.

Let's get Charles on Behind the Bastards!
That would be amusing for sure
Oh my god, I'd watch the HELL out of those episodes

Would be interesting, but Odin is much more analogous to Hermes.
