Wing Recovery- Derek Hama recovers two popped wings during a wing foiling session on the North Shore

- It was a stormy day and the waves were not lining up very well. Two wing foilers popped their wing bladders during this session while winging pretty far out to sea. Paddling back to shore through waves and against the offshore wind is hard enough. With a deflated and waterlogged wing dragging under you, it is a real pain. Derek Hamasaki demonstrates how he helps out his fellow wingers by taking their deflated wings to shore. He recovers the wing by draping it over his shoulders, securing it with chewing leash wrapped around the waist, and winging it back to shore. This makes it much easier for the stranded winger to paddle the board back to shore without the wing dragging. Please always look out for each other and help when you can, Aloha!

Aloha!
It's so impressive how he can even stand up on his board with the wing wrapped around him. What size board is he on?
Yes, his board is pretty tiny, not sure what size though.
What do you think about having a lightweight, mesh bag and some straps attached to your waist in the event of a bladder failure? If getting back to shore is that difficult I'd be carrying an EPIRB
I think that would be overkill. Both wingers would have been able to paddle back without Derek’s help it would have just taken longer. An epirb is a good idea if there is no cell service and you are going too far out to swim or paddle back in an emergency
Does he carry two kites in the water with him? (One inflated and one folded?)
Yes, he’s taking the deflated wings back to shore, see video description 🤙🏼
@@blueplanetsurf. Saw the video and read the description. Is it normal to take an extra wing with you in the water? Why? Do they easily pop?
Proving once again that Derek is "DA MAN"!!!
Yes! 🤙🏼
Man, what a great guy!
👍😎🤙🏼
Beautiful waves and music and a real hero ☺️
🙏😎🤙🏼
What was the cause of wing damage?
The first was an older Ensis, probably the bladder was weak and degraded and popped, it did not get tumbled in the waves. Not sure about the second one.
Second one the strut ripped clean off the leading edge during a fall holding onto the front handle. I think it was a defect in the stitching. Got it replaced under warranty.
Phew, I thought you'd find shark tooth puncture.
Great spot!
Yes it is!
