Creation is my favorite "undiscovered" Trane track. I hear something new every time I listen to it. I introduce it to people and it always blows their mind. Apparently this is the only known performance. The intro lick is the ringtone on my phone!
That is because this is a spontaneous composition, the band did not know this composition, Coltrane just started playing it. This was confirmed by McCoy. It's my favorite also!
WOW! what amazing musicianship, love, and spirit from all 4 of them. Trane is singing and riding the magic carpet ride of McCoy, Garrsion, and Elvin. I Want To Talk About You on this recording is a extremely healing track that has done wonders for my life. This group is LOVE and the ESSENCE of SPIRTUAL and HEALING MUSIC
Unbelievable! I only knew the very first 8 minutes from "Creation" (aka Untitled Original) from that obscure bootleg "John Coltrane - Reflections" on Chiaroscuro Records (1982) but they unfortunately did cut the tune. I finally get to hear the whole tune after more than 35 years later! Many, many Thanx!
I heard Trane a number of times at Half Note and maybe this night. The band played on top of the bar where a stage was erected. I remember one night, I was at the bar and Trane is going at it, the owners were shouting at their buddies at the bar cause Trane and Elvin were so loud. Years later I came across similar scene at Punk Rock gigs. Trane was and always will be Ahead Of His Time!
Tuning into FM radio in 1965 was somewhat of an unusual thing, mostly for intellectuals and their longhair music. Mr JC was ON at the Halfnote! Thanks.
Great Coltrane set although Jimmy Garrison's bass is under recorded. Terrific to hear the voice of Alan Grant who has always been at the forefront of presenting live jazz and radio broadcasts. While he was a DJ at a local Queens NY FM station in the early '60s he hosted Sunday Youth Matinees at the original Birdland, which I had the good fortune to play several times. Later on he moved to Las Vegas where he hosted the Monday Night at the 4 Queens live NPR broadcasts for over 15 years. It was happening! Alan moved to New Zealand where his wife was from after becoming a semi-pro poker player. He told me about the hundreds of unreleased professional tape recordings he owned, but I don't think any where released. NPR should consider releasing or posting some of these broadcasts. Among the many shows I saw at the 4 Queens that were most impressive was Chet Baker, Bobby Hutcherson and many other mostly LA based cats. He passed away in October 2012 after an amazing 93 years on Earth per Google. stevetintweiss
Creation on Blue Parrot Records. There is second Blue Parrot Record with recordings in New York on May 7 1965. Songs are Brazilia and My favorite things

dam that first solo is hard to transcribe becuase hes playing so fast and some of the notes are hard to hear becuase his style is slurring everything man so killing
Yo Bryant! You turned me on to this record back in Berklee '13 or '14. I keep coming back over the years and it just sounds more and more killing! To Desmond - Bryant definitely transcribed this! haha
The audio on this one leaves a lot to be desired. There is a superior stereo boot out there online and it sounds almost as good as the officially released 'Half Note' sets.....
@@ChrisPFDeVito I tried to post a link but UA-cam won't allow it. If you'd like to get in touch with me privately, I could send you the link or the edit I've put together of the MP3 file that's available.
Hey! I'm curious to know if it might be possible to snag the bootleg of the improved audio/original tape from this set that you've mentioned-found a recent higher-quality upload of 'I Want to Talk About You' from this date; makes a significant difference in the listening experience. It would be incredibly appreciated, if so!
First "theme" is boring as hell, some of the sounds coming out of the saxophone are so ugly as to bring to mind pig being slaughtered. As great as Trane was, he seems to have lost track of what good swinging jazz is, IMO.
Damn bro I was looking for your records so that I could compare your obviously better performance to Coltrane’s, seeing as how you have so many notes on it... but I couldn’t find them...

Met, heard and briefly hung out with Red Garland when l lived in Dallas in '80 at The Recovery Room. A jazz memory of a lifetime. A gentle man...

The sheer stamina, both physical and mental to achieve this level of improvised transcendence is incomprehensible. Wow!
That first tune. Talk about dissecting a motif. Genius!
Yes sir.All the ways to repeat, reinvent and reinterpret a phrase!

It's absolutely mindblowing!
Met Elvin's wife Keiko, who was setting up his drum set that night as well. Wonderful!
Thank goodness the tapes ran well beyond the radio shows' time limits of 45 minutes.

One Up One Down is a masterpiece, one of my favorite jazz CD's
UNFREAKIN'-BELIEVABLE!!!!!!!
I'm hoping we get to hear this rendition of "Afro Blue" in full. This has got to be the most solemn version I've ever heard.
Brilliant. Almost exactly 50 years old; I was a day old when it was recorded.
😮

so far the best sounding quality there is on UA-cam for these two Half Note sessions. Thnx a lot 'Coltrane Research'
Thank you for all you do in bringing us all this wonderful Coltrane! 🙂

Wow. Thanks for the history! I love his voice and demeanor. You could tell he was a true aficionado of the art.
Where Hudson street meets Spring street is Hallowed Ground. I get goosebumps when I am over that way. All Hail the Canterino family.

seems like the pitch is in the cracks... between keys? That would definitely make it harder to hear

vova47 no room for squares at the half note .
If that first song doesn't sound like swing to you, your opinion isn't just stupid, it's objectively false. go back to pat martino and mozart.
Go listen to Kenny G
