    Nice video. I've seen similar traps with a two layer cover so the birds cannot reach the mice at all, so you never have an injured mouse during a trapping session. I think these were hand made, but still very effective. I am fairly certain I saw these on Ben Woodruff's channel. Gorgeous female American Kestrel. I'm working on learning more about falconry and have some hunts set up for this season to see if it's something I want to dedicate the time, effort and money into. Do you have any videos on weight management for Kestrels? They are such tiny birds, and I know a lot of people have not flown them and may not be able to do videos on their weight management.

      Every now and then a kestrel will injure the mouse. I don’t have any videos on weight management. Maybe I should document more of that aspect of it.

      @@RedTalesFalconry Mercer Falconry from the UK touched on this a bit, but not in any real depth, unless I missed a video. I've heard others say Kestrel weight management is tough, even using a scale that measures in grams. In the Mercer videos from the UK, his Eurasian Kestrel was fluctuating by 10-15% of it's body weight on many days. His Eurasian Kestrel was mving between about 170 to 195 grams I think?

      @@RedTalesFalconry Yeah, it depends on the bird. I had a BC that was a half inch width on the cage, lost two dumb mice because they poked their heads out and lights were out. I made a trap with 1/4 width holes and mice were safe. making tiny nooses are hard, but as long as the poundage is 3-6 lb weight tested bird should be good

      @@killyhawkaan2076 I've definitely had kestrels kill a mouse threw the wires. I typically use this trap for red-tails and it works fine for kestrels, so I go with it!

      Not sure why you think this makes the planet die. The bird is still hunting and is eventually released back to the wild. Chances are it would die without me working with it so in all actuality I'm helping to increase numbers of wild kestrels.

      there is tons of snares on the cage, as the bird tries to grab the mice eventually they get snagged and you now have a trapped bird.

      It is for the purpose of falconry, meaning i train it and hunt with it. Then after a season or two I typically release them back to the wild.

      It's illegal in the UK, all falconry here is done with captive bred brids. How do you go about training a wild bird to the point it won't just fly away?

      @@adamwilson2905 It is really pretty easy. Typically the regulations require it be a passage bird (less then a year). Then you spend time with it, get it to feed from you or in your presence and then get it to jump, then fly to you. Then take out hunting and put up game for it and it realizes life is pretty good.

      Assuming you are familiar with trapping I'm very close by so as soon as it is hung up, I make in to get it. I've trapped a lot of birds with this and never had one even get close to being injured.

      @@MD_falconry I figured as much just by the way you spoke. I really don't understand why you think DNR would yank a license for trapping a bird with what you perceive as to large of nooses. I follow every letter of the law, I really don't think our DNR would take a license for following their laws. They do not specify or mention anything about the size of the noose. They do acknowledge that there is always a risk when trapping and that is why the regs say I am responsible for the bird if it were to get injured while trapping.

      @@RedTalesFalconry no, all raptors are protected here, but it doesn't seem to have helped our Kestrels, their numbers have plummeted in recent years whilst all the other raptors have increased dramatically. Coincidence maybe? I don't know and I don't think the experts do either. Anyway good hunting.

      @@RedTalesFalconry if there everywhere do what any decent falconer would do, find a best, take a chick and do it properly, you've put to much stress on that bird already, I would of hated to see the state of that birds keg after struggling so hard to escape the wire slip, what are you wanting a kestrel for? They only eat insects, sparrow sized birds and anphebians. Do yourself a favour and save up some bucks and buy a Red Tail or something similar and leave the wild kestrels alone, if there everywhere there' doing well.

      Stephen Philpott again anyone here in the states would trap a RT in the same way, nobody would buy a kestrel or red tail, it is not about money, I have a Harris hawk that I paid for because they aren’t native to my area or I would trap, I use kestrel to hunt starlings to feed my other bird

      @@RedTalesFalconry You use a kestrel to catch Starlings to feed a Harris Hawk.
      I've always found Harris Hawks so easy to train and will take a multiple selection of prey.
      Why don't you hunt with the Harris and let it catch it's own starlings (food).
      Catching a wild bird of prey and taking its freedom and stressing it out untangling from the trap, keeping it in a cage (aviary) and the process of manning the bird is not the way of a true falconer, your supposed to show respect to your bird (of prey).
      You would be fined here in the UK for doing such a act and fround upon other falconers.
      Release the kestrel back to where it belongs and wait till spring and get yourself a chick mate.
      Be a good falconer and not a cunt👍

      Stephen Philpott not sure why you have to get hateful, this is very common here so your standards of a true falconer do not apply. Many would consider buying a bird not true falconry. The kestrel in the video has already been released after serving its purpose. It now has the skill and confidence to take out starlings so is a better hunter then when I trapped it. I’m not fined here in the USA because it is perfectly legal and the most common practice of hunting with kestrels.

      @@Toothandtalon mate its the method of capture show here, just not showing any respect for the falcon you want to hunt for you, many falconers or so called falconers use this particular type of trap which should be really be banned, there are much safer traps avaliable for under £$50 which will cause let's stress and injury to the birds you should respect as a true falconer.

    This is awful. What if they break a wing or leg trying to escape? Let wildlife be, they’re not ours to take. Isn’t there something else you can do besides trapping innocent wildlife? Get a pair of binoculars and enjoy them from afar. LEAVE THEM ALONE. Trapping birds of prey should be ILLEGAL.

      I've never had one injured, once the bird is caught I'm there in seconds to secure it. I have many other things that I do but working with birds of prey is a passion of mine that I enjoy. I do get binoculars and enjoy from a distance but there is nothing as exciting when a wild animal allows you in to their world to enjoy what they do with a front row seat. It is quite fascinating and many bird lovers also trap birds for scientific purposes. In many cases this is how things are learned to then make better societal changes to preserve wildlife.
