you can tell by the comments who grew up with the live shows and who grew up with the movie, Live show - We know talent, Marlene is right up there with some of the best. Movie: Everyone thinks Rosemarie was a goddess!
I will never forget when they showed this. They had just shown CATS on PBS (a few months before that), I was living in Arizona and they didn’t show it there so Mom taped it for me and sent it to me along with the TV guide article. After that I watched the video 2 or 3 times a day for a year! Then in the fall of ’99 this was on the Today Show and I was able to tape it!!!
Everybody's thinking that. Even the fastest people with 10+ years performing experience in Cats need more than 7 minutes to make their makeup look good.
It might have been better if the two of them had switched roles. Demeter has a great voice, but I think her acting--sort of getting pleasure from memories--is more of a Bombalurina thing. I'm not sure what I think of Bombalurina, but it seems like she might take the threat of him more seriously.
I don't care what anyone says. Marlene Daniel is the shit. For someone who still came to work every night with a broken ankle...and she was with the cast for 16 years. Don't get me wrong, the movie was great. But there is a difference between doing a live performance (where they only have a certain amount of time alloted) and a movie where they recorded the soundtrack and then lip synced and danced to it.
Here you go... And may I point out that Rosemarie and Eava were not in the production at the time. They were asked to do this performance. ua-cam.com/video/0_N6A-gT_wA/v-deo.html
Happy 35th anniversary, to my favorite Musical in the hold wide world. The Moments of Happiness grown stronger and stronger for generations to come. I love you always and forever!!
Personally, I think Marlene sounded great in this. Marlene has been with Cats ever since it opened, and yes I agree that her voice is a little low. But I don't think she should have all this stuff thrown at her, just for that. She has done a lot of hard work to get to where she is right now. Besides you can't expect every actress out there to be just like rosemary ford. Don't think I'm trying to be rude, cause I'm not. I'm just trying to stop all the hate being tossed at her right now.
This is great but honestly i think the video version just ruins the other versions for everyone! This was actually the first macavity song i heard, so it is quite familiar to me.
Cats 1998 is a very polished production, stunning on Bluray, But there is still room for live performances, actually being there. Its very interesting and fun to compare the various different countries productions and styles by date. The original UK production shows its circa 1980 punk heritage with Toyah style costumes and hairstyles, the US Broadway production is very 80s Americana ie big hair and better costumes, the later productions borrow the better imagery from the earlier ones. Hollywood Cats 2019 was lazy in design and implementation, nasty expensive CGI rather than inexpensive makeup and furry costumes. the songs are ruined in context and obviously not rehearsed, a good case study for future musicals to learn from.
@@joefish6091 Finally someone else who gets and appreciates the original London show's 1980s post-punk heritage. John Napier did say he was looking at street fashion at the time when he designed the costumes. Some of the photos of the original 1981 cast laying about the theatre seats look straight out of an 80s gothic night club. I also love that you mentioned Toyah and Cats in the same sentence. Her early albums, aesthetic and performances in her videos always gave me Cats vibes. Especially the video for I Want To Be Free where she's crawling about all over the place.
THANK YOU!!!! SOMEONE WHO FINNALY GETS ME! WHO MADE THE CAST?! As Johnny Depp says: "Where are the writers I'm gonna kill them!" But here it is "Where are the casters I'm GONNA KILL THEM"
It’s a shame there’s not much footage of the older Broadway and West End casts. People are so biased towards the 1998 VHS version and it’s so sad to see, I think they all did a great job here.
Yes it was originally a west end musical, think about it, this particular song specifically mentions Scotland Yard, the famous police station of the London Metropolitan Police Department, so I wonder where it is set and first shown?
too be honest I don't think is completely terrible but I would say its not the best and I would say the Marlene Danielle isn't my favorite Bombalurina, but I do like how she gives her a different flair a more rough flair
@wickedboyike2 Did I understand you correctly? You think every fan of the video version is like that. There are others out there. Sure some think like that. I think the vid is great and I love it. But I've seen CATS live and that Bomba was fantastic too! I love Rosemarie Fords Bombalurina but of cause there are other great ones. And you aren't better than the ones you hate because that's the same line of thinking. Just thought I point it out. But then again, we're both living in free countries.
Whoever says The Movie is better...I LOVE YOU! Whoever says this is better...get hearing aids and listen hard. 1. Song was sped up 2. Singers are terrible. 3. They fail miserably at trying to do the movie. 4. Its your opinion but seriously...the movie is better.
Isa De Leon honey the movie is based upon this production. The 1998 film is based on the UK version which the broadway production is from. The Broadway production opended in 1982 way before the film was ever produced. Also I think there's a reason the show ran for 18 years on broadway, and itrs because people enjoyed it. But their not trying to recreate the film, the film was recreating this production and all others of the time.
I really love Marlene as Bombalurina. She has that sort of husk and brass about her. She makes the song jazzier.
Marlene played Bomba for nineteen years, what a freaking legend
Oh Marlene Danielle as always been one of my favorite Bombalurina's! Fantastic!
This is a treasure. Can't wait until they revive it on Broadway. I just hope they don't mess with it too much.
you can tell by the comments who grew up with the live shows and who grew up with the movie, Live show - We know talent, Marlene is right up there with some of the best.
Movie: Everyone thinks Rosemarie was a goddess!
I like both of them but i think I’ll go with Marlene because i love her unique moves and voice
i love marlene danielle. i saw her go on for debbie allen in west side story as anita. she was fantastic. and in cats...sooooo good.
so no one’s gonna talk how good demeter is in this? 💀
I will never forget when they showed this. They had just shown CATS on PBS (a few months before that), I was living in Arizona and they didn’t show it there so Mom taped it for me and sent it to me along with the TV guide article. Someday I want to do the auction and be Demeter and be like her
I wish I lived in New York so I could catch stuff like this..
Oh my God, Lena Hall. I just can't! 😱😱😱
What is wrong with Bomba in this? I really liked it. Don't compare all productions of Cats to the movie -_-
Actual_Aoba I'm not comparing with the movie but with the amazing live shows I have seen and I think this one really sucks.
Seeing her makeup, I totally believe she needed only 7 minutes to put it on. :-/
It's almost like the Victoria cat is thinking: 'Yeah 7 minutes... and it shows...'
Everybody's thinking that. Even the fastest people with 10+ years performing experience in Cats need more than 7 minutes to make their makeup look good.
I wonder what's she's been doing after the show closed.
I like it someday I wanna audition for cats
i've done cats…you have to follow the make-up plot…so her make-up is exactly what it's supposed to be.
It might have been better if the two of them had switched roles. Demeter has a great voice, but I think her acting--sort of getting pleasure from memories--is more of a Bombalurina thing. I'm not sure what I think of Bombalurina, but it seems like she might take the threat of him more seriously.

it's great to see Celina in this role.... as well as Marlene. They are both so sweet and nice
marlene danielle i love u..
I'm one of the twins, Coricopat.
The video version cats had that sweet maturity to them and they had a good chemistry. These two are too diva-like.
The girl playing Demeter is Celina fro the Search for the next Elle Woods on MTV
they left it out because the man who played Gus [who has to double as Growltiger] was in his 90s! But i agree with you! ^_^
Happy 35th anniversary, to my favorite Musical in the hold wide world. The Moments of Happiness grown stronger and stronger for generations to come. I love you always and forever!!
How did you like the movie?
@@ironicbobcat1The 98 movie or 2019
@@juliavilla8088 2019 one, honestly when I watched it, I was always feeling uneasy
Also dang, ur replying 2 years later
Videos captured by galaxy s10 plus
Do you have any idea how insanely difficult it must be to do a show like Cats for 16 YEARS STRAIGHT?????
this. is so much for the first time ever
That's awesome
Although I don't particularly like her voice, I do think that Marlene is a fantastic dancer
this. is so much for the first time ever before the game is
I thought so!
I wasn't sure because I thought that all the girls had never been on broadway.
I saw her as Demeter, too.
Personally, I think Marlene sounded great in this. Marlene has been with Cats ever since it opened, and yes I agree that her voice is a little low. @disneyfangirl101 She was playing in Cats for about 18 years from when it opened till when it closed. I am sorry what shows on Broadway have you done?
If I remember correctly, she was 19.
Wow! And she had played in that show for 16 years! When was this recorded and is there more clips from this broadcast?
This is great but honestly i think the video version just ruins the other versions for everyone!
This was actually the first macavity song i heard, so it is quite familiar to me.
legendary bomba
Sorry but any Cats production will be compared to the 1998 movie simply cuz it was the best version.

exactly
THANK YOU!!!! SOMEONE WHO FINNALY GETS ME! WHO MADE THE CAST?! As Johnny Depp says: "Where are the writers I'm gonna kill them!" But here it is "Where are the casters I'm GONNA KILL THEM"
1:36 .......just listen to that voice! Damn!
they come across more scary than sensual. and doing the same thing every night for 16 years, in Marlene's case... you're going to get bored and sloppy
I don't see anything sloppy about this.
I actuslly like this. : )
@rumpleteazer1212 I think I am not sure...that she did the tour production I saw...
It’s a shame there’s not much footage of the older Broadway and West End casts. People are so biased towards the 1998 VHS version and it’s so sad to see, I think they all did a great job here.
West end is a lot better 😁😁
Nope
Yes it was originally a west end musical, think about it, this particular song specifically mentions Scotland Yard, the famous police station of the London Metropolitan Police Department, so I wonder where it is set and first shown?
Does anyone know whether Geraldine Gardner was still alive then?
I really like Demeters voice but Bombas is kind of... weird
@kingrobinho77 The villian or criminal cat in the musical.
Who is the actress plays Demeter ?
:O I disagree, I think she has a really powerful throaty voice... Each to their own though, I don't really like Demeter's makeup or hair as much here.
curious which parts are those?
Why is the Apsaragus cat in this scene? there arent supposed to be any guys here. just the female cats
How did she get the part??
@livetofly935 He was probably a fan dressed up.
Lol yes...they had to cut the song short...
@veggietenor well...uh...what a nice way to put things lol
This song was performed by Taylor Swift in the very end of the past decade!
no she was the swing/understudy first than she moved into the role
I don't think she was 55 at the time of this recording.
what is macavaty
Whoa she was the original Demeter? =D
@Apjooz true dat lol
too be honest I don't think is completely terrible but I would say its not the best and I would say the Marlene Danielle isn't my favorite Bombalurina, but I do like how she gives her a different flair a more rough flair
surely the best bombalurina :)
i like the movie cast wayyyy better. i dont even really like their makeup
I think they skipped Demeter's second verse. O.o
She is lieing she is from the Musical One not the real one!(not to be judging)
A character in Cats...he's kind of a criminal cat lol
Do you mean swing?
@wickedboyike2 Did I understand you correctly? You think every fan of the video version is like that. There are others out there. Sure some think like that. I think the vid is great and I love it. You know what I really like about this play? All the female felines...😻
dude dont diss her she has been doing this for 16 years of course shes gonna sound kinda wierd
@TribalStudios18 Well, that original cast is almost completely dead!!
its kinda close to the movie.
Ah.
even broadway can't compare to the London version, which in my opinion is the best of all. Effort is good, but I can't stand to listen to this.
Marlene Danielle about kicked herself in the face at 3:38
i like her better as demeter
from the movie? yeah so much better.
Whoever says The Movie is better...I LOVE YOU! Whoever says this is better...get hearing aids and listen hard.
1. Song was sped up

Isa De Leon and besides that if you look closely the film has alot of flaws in it
She says the singers are terrible lol. Her opinion, she can keep. But to me she loses any worth arguing with
???
these aren't the Cats I grew up with...
no...the understudy/swing
i dont care for the woman who plays bombalarina in this one
waay better.
sometimes even i sing better then the bomby here!
i luv demeters voice but bomba , not that good she should be in the color purple or something. just not cats ,not bombalurina
I will admit she sounded a bit strange.
@HorseyBabe12 Oh Hell yeah!!!! There way better than these people
it was and wasn’t good. some voices
(not going to name anyone)
Well I can when the broadway one sucked in my opinion. The vocals just werent doing it for me....
I don't like this because I prefer the video version. The acting is WAAAAAYYYY overdone!
Wait a minute, that's a woman? Wow.
Marlene sounds terrible! How'd she ever get on Broadway?
omg.... bomby's voice kinda sucks in my opinion!!! no offense!!!!
bombalurina sings ther really bad rosemarie ford is much better
dvd version much better! these cats look so ugly the ones in the movie are so much better looking!!
Bomba seems to be a man!...am I right?... :/ ...Well...even the Mexican version is worst...
Same...give me the movie version any day.
Pleased with what we got?
Bet you regreted these words in 2019 ...
I prefer Aeva May and Rosemarie Ford much more than them
to me there is always a reason why Rosemarie was asked to do the video production, not Marlene
I did not like this rendition. It seems like they are fighting to be noticed more and they don't blend very well. Just a personal opinion.
