    A favorite of San Diego hikers, this hike in the Eflin Forest to Lake Hodges Overlook offers a lot. Starting in a quaint valley along Escondido Creek, believed to have been a meeting point for neighboring native tribes, you’ll ascend the picturesque Way Up Trail until you reach the shores of Olivenhain Reservoir. After circling the reservoir, you’ll arrive at Lake Hodges Overlook, where panoramic views of the lake and mountain peaks are a feast for your eyes.

    I remember this area from a hike I did in 2015. I didn't get all the way to the Lake Hodges Overlook, but I did take the Way Up Trail to the crest where all the roads/trails meet, and got a great perspective of Olivenhain Reservoir. I got to see baby Western Toads hopping along the trail and saw incredible botanical diversity. The switchbacks up the Way Up are incredible as you can see the lush chaparral and boulders along that north-facing slope!! You really picked a great place to showcase!

      Nice, yea, i was noticing that north-facing slope on the "way up!" too, really nice and untouched. Glad you got to enjoy the spot too, it's a cool place.

    Moved to Escondido 6 months ago and been looking for some decent hikes. I miss the San Gabriels to say the least. I could see Baldy from my kitchen window most of my life. I digress. Not much of interest so far. I'll try this one. I'll try the Mt San Jacinto area in spring. I guess I'll have to take a trip to the Olympic NP to get my fix of forest hiking. Ain't life grand. 🤡

    Cris as always your guides are top notch for beginners, intermediate, as well experts. Your latest El Cajon Mtn was a hike I never knew about. But I wanted to give advise to anyone thinking about the Cactus 2 Clouds hike. I have climbed it twice now. I have studied your guide more than a dozen times. It's not only the best but maybe the only step by step guide. I reviewed it again recently. The first time at maybe 3am, I followed a large group to the right of the picnic tables, even though my notes of your guide said stay to the left. It was the North Lyceum trail. Very fresh vegetation but I followed them anyway. Safety in Numbers??
    Once I climbed that portion, the others were gone. So I went back to your guide and looked for the most traveled trail, the most boot tracks. And I was on my way to a beautiful sunrise. I have watched a lot of video's of the hike but nothings shows the step by step like yours. And my second trip was easier following exactly your directions. Thanks Cris

      Thank you thank you 🙏 and sorry those folks took you down North Lykken! The benches are one of the areas that folks have the most trouble at. There's just so many use trails on those lower slopes, and then throw in N. Lykken, it's a bit confusing. I'm hoping to update the guide this year and get a 360 video up there too. Looking for a nice window maybe in Fall where have cool temps and lots of daylight so that I can shoot the whole thing in the light. Anywho, thanks again for the kind words and really happy that the guides are hepful!

    Great hike. Lots of exploring to be done. Parking is very tough on the weekends/ busy days. If you did this yesterday, I was across the lake on Fletcher Point (peninsula in the center of the video at about 9:18). :-) Neat 6 mile RT hike if you need another hike to do while you're down here.

      Nice, I've never done Fletcher Point but it's on my list, hoping to check it out. Trying to spend some time in SD before it gets too hot.

    Thanks Cris, this has been on my list. I love that you are doing San Diego trails justice. And the music??? Is it the Sandels from Endless Summer??

    • @Hikingguy
      @Hikingguy  3 роки тому

      Ha, well, no, nothing that exciting, the music is royalty-free stock music from UA-cam. And hoping to get more SD guides up in the next few weeks before the heat notches up.
