It was mentioned at the time this movie was released that Michelle Pfeiffer actually learned how to use a bull whip and the scene where she whips the heads off of the department store mannequins was done in one take because that was how good she got with it.

Max Schreck was named after a German actor who did the first ever portrayal of a vampire in a movie. The German movie style from 100 years ago was also Tim Burtons inspiration for his dark and surreal style.

Max Shreck was in NOSFERATU which was the first portrayal of Dracula on-screen. It was unlicensed and Bram Stoker's widow sued. The court ordered all prints of the movie be destroyed and all but one WAS. But even now most of the copies of THAT print change the name to "Orlock" instead of Dracula.
It is interesting to note that Max Schreck's last name *and, yes, he was given it birth) is the German word for FRIGHT.

While this interpretation of Selina’s origin story has nothing in common with the ones in the comics, this one is my favorite. I love the dark and slightly mad feel to her. I don’t love all the elements of the Penguin’s story, but I think they knocked it out of the park with Catwoman.
Also I love the detail where at a costume party, Bruce and Selina are the only people who don’t pick a costume, suggesting that their real lives are the masks in their lives while their vigilante identities are their real selves.

The first movie was Burton doing a Batman movie with some of his influence this one is 100 percent Burton's version of Batman the idea here is similar to the first one in that Batman Penguin and Catwoman are all the same person just like Joker and Batman were in the first one. All 3 characters here in this sequel had something terrible happen to them that transformed them into what they are in this movie its high society Christopher Walken's character is the real villain of the film Burton's message is the freaks and the weirdos are victims of the so-called established order.

This is my favorite live action Batman film of all time, although you could like argue that it is actually a Catwoman film (she got the arc, main motivation and even got to end the final villain). The costumes, dialogue, music and acting is the best of all the Batman films in my opinion. It's not perfect, there are things I would want to change but I still think it's the best. Some boring people are questioning the "realism" in this movie but this is a goddam superhero comic book movie! Why realism? Why not emotions? Selina being shot but still standing to get her revenge. Penguin being a reversed Moses who want to kill all the first born who got a different life than him. Alfred just wanting to celebrate fucking christmas. I love this movie. The song "Finale: part 1" is one of my favorite Batman related songs of all time.

@@user-td6fq7or8d I would make Penguins motivation about killing the babies a mystery until the end. That would also give us time with Bruce's inner struggle of feeling for him but at the same time he cannot shake the feeling something is not right. Also Batman killing is... I mean it is a continuation of the first movie but if I could change that all together I would. Also just some action scenes are a bit too silly even though I like many of them. Stuff like that.

The supernatural/metahuman origins for these characters are entirely a creation of this movie. The Penguin was supposed to be a charming, likeable socialite, the way Al Capone presented himself. This version of Catwoman is closer to The Crow then any previous version of Selina Kyle.
Despite being so non-canonical, this movie really captures the tone and essence of Gotham and the Bruce/Selina relationship better than any movie version since.

This movie is the one that made me a "DC Girl" when I first got into comics, and it was specifically because of CATWOMAN.
There are some who argue that with each adaptation (by each writer, director, actor, or all three) is a new version of that character. The reason why I love Catwoman is *because* all those differences in iterations 'fit' with the whole "Cats Have 9 Lives" -- She EVOLVES! And it is beautiful!
    I wrote a practice thesis about Catwoman, and how she is the best barometer through which society and it's ideas of women change over time -- she was in the FIRST Batman-title Comic ("Batman #1"), one of it's 'founding fathers' in the massive rolodex of villains (aka: The Rogues Gallery), and in that time she has been so many things;
A Jewel Thief in a Cat Mask the 40s, a Woman With Split Personalities in the 50s, A Dominatrix & Prostitute in the 70s/80s (as written by the titan of comics Frank Miller), An Animal Rights Activist in the 90s (animated series), and since 2002 (the Brubaker relaunch) the Anti-Villain to Batman's Anti-Hero.
The solid through all of it is two fold; (1) she's a burglar, & (2) she was poor and grew up hard (usually orphaned), mistreated by those who should have cared for her, and is fighting a corrupt system. Weather she steals to get by, to get back at those who have wronged her/'her people', or from other criminals because she knows they'd never report to the police that they stuff they stole was then stolen from them, it was always about getting ahead of where she started.
From the very start they were meant to reflect each other; Batman's creators Bob Kane and Bill Finger said they saw cats as "the opposite of bats", and that she was never meant to be a killer or evil, but an opponent in a mental and romantic chess game - - and that is what that amazing dynamic between them has been built on for the past EIGHTY-TWO YEARS!
She's been Batman's wife (in the 50s and again in the last few years) and mother to his child (Helena Kyle, aka The Huntress), his "partner in crime" (they figured out how to break Superman out of Poison Ivy's Spell together in HUSH), and while Batman is a hero because of his intelligence (he is "The World's Greatest Detective", though several versions seriously lose sight of that) and was based on Sherlock Holmes, Catwoman *is* his perfect foil, his Irene Adler; The Woman Who Got Away and outsmarted him.
Much as I really do enjoy Anne Hathaway's version, Michelle Pfeiffer is the one who lead me down this rabbit hole and for that I will always love her because I am grateful.

I grew up watching Batman 1989 as THE definitive Batman movie, so I do prefer it of these two; however Batman Returns has really grown on me in recent years and as an adult I can appreciate how well crafted it is, how well written, and thematic. In some ways it is more “stylized” than the first and I think it actually serves the themes very well. So many little nuances too - like both Bruce and Selina going maskless to the costume ball which kind of asks the question “ARE they really maskless… or IS that the mask?” Burton is definitely a genius

12:22 fun fact, the television show, Gotham, which ran from 2014-2019 pays great homage to this iconic scene. Also, Paul Reubens, aka, Pee Wee Herman, who plays Penguin's dad in the beginning also recreates Penguin's father on Gotham. A show you should check out.
The show, Gotham is more about how Jim Gordon became Commissioner Gordon during its run and another story how the boy Bruce became The Dark Knight. It has all the great characters that made Batman and probably the best Alfred ever. Not only the butler and caretaker of Bruce but one kick ass, fighting Alfred played by Sean Pertwee who was in Event Horizon (1997), and Dog Soldiers (2002), a war movie with werewolves.

I *love* the chemistry and interactions between Bruce and Selena. Vicki was too normal to make a relationship work, but Selena is complicated and dealing with similar struggles of who her true self is just like Bruce. Lots of cool symbolism in this film!
The Penguin is first rejected, wrongfully, for looking like a monster, and then is, rightfully, rejected for being a monster - The lake exit is symbolic of this. The penguins' funeral at the end is sad for them, though there's a tinge of sympathy for The Penguin - The penguins raised Osward with love and care, giving their all to him, but only raised a monster, who couldn't overcome his hardships to be the respectable member of society he was initially perceived to be, him ultimately destroying himself due to being an embittered, hate-filled monster.
Selina feels liberated ego-wise as Catwoman, after being mistreated by Max Schreck, with the attempted murder being the straw that breaks the camel's back. However, despite her new, awesome persona, her costume gets more and more battered and torn throughout the film, as she keeps making the wrong choices - She fights someone she's not supposed to and dies because of it with Batman, teams up with a murderous supervillain who ends up killing her due to a perceived slight from an overblown ego, and then dies multiple times by killing a murderer in revenge instead of letting the law handle it.
Selina and Bruce aren't wearing masks at the "Annual Maxsquerade", as Batman and Catwoman are their true identities.

Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman is the reason why Anne Hathaway's take rubbed me the wrong way. Michelle embodied that character so well. It didn't feel forced to me, I could feel her pain despite her sarcasm and my gosh she was so funny too! "Honey I'm home!...Oh I forgot, I'm not married" 😂. And I agree with you that Selina and Bruce were the best part of this film. Their chemistry was so intense, l loved it! I liked how they both lead double lives and how they kinda bonded over their loneliness. Their relationship made this film my favourite even though Nicholson's Joker was really good. But to be honest, there's something too theatrical about Tim Burton's style and it prevents me from getting into his films. I can never take the villains seriously either. The Penguin made me laugh unintentionally a couple of times (his yellow duck for example). Not sure if you're doing more Burton, but I'd honestly love a "Mars Attacks!" reaction. It's zany but I think you'll enjoy it. "Edward Scissorhands" is a no brainer of course. Always fun watching these reactions :)

Yeah, while I liked Anne Hathaway's Catwoman as well, I think you're exactly right regarding the pain portrayed throughout in Michelle's take (which I really liked). She felt like a broken character who was embracing the darker side of her personality, and thereby reaching a new confidence in that identity... I would have loved to see more of her (and maybe less of Penguin haha). Overall though, having watched these two Burton Batman films, I have a new respect for his role in shaping Batman and the Batman tropes that are now commonplace in pop culture. And I'd love to react to both Mars Attacks and Edward Scissorhands if I have time... maybe as Patreon bonus reactions :)

@@nickreacts6394 Yeah I agree with you. Stylistically speaking, Burton's Batman was incredibly creative and I was definitely impressed with a lot of the shots. Also, I know you're busy but I'd love to revisit "Mars Attacks!" for sure!...It's so underrated but so creative and it has a stellar cast too. I think Jack Nicholson is in it? I actually rewatched the trailer and my gosh it still freaks me out haha. I think it's the only Burton film that has genuinely scared me even though I'm not entirely sure of the genre. This movie was originally supposed to introduce both the characters of Robin and Two-Face. The Robin part didn't happen because that would've been too many characters and too many story lines. Two-Face didn't happen because Billy Dee Williams wanted out of his Batman obligation, and they fulfilled that for him. Harvey Dendt was turned into Max Shreck, and made into the shady businessman. The electrocution scene at the end was originally written as that's how Harvey Dendt became Two-Face. Instead, it was just used to kill Max.

So, just to clarify, there are no supernatural elements to Catwoman in this. The movie explains what happened to her with one of Max's lines. "Who would have thought she had a brain to damage?" She's mentally broken and gradually coming undone. Her "resurrection" was symbolic. The fact that she survives a lot of the things she does can be chalked up to the fact that it's a Tim Burton movie. He doesn't exactly work in reality as a medium.
On the performance side of things, Pfeifer learned to use a whip at a very high level and really did put a live bird in her mouth for her role. She killed it in this. Best character hands down.
As for Penguin, while this is NOT his origin, there are a lot of elements true to his character in this. He comes from wealth, was cast down to the bottom unjustly, and wants desperately to receive the attention and adoration that he feels someone of his class deserves, resorting to crime in order to elevate his own status. It's just that in this version, it's his own family that casts him out for his appearance and violent nature. Burton loves the Frankenstein's Monster approach to characters. In the comics, Oswald is the heir to the Cobblepot estate (sort of rivals to the Waynes), but he was cast out of high society by misfortune when that estate was lost.
Incidentally, I love the fact that he incorporated Burges Meredith's Penguin laugh into the character in his own way.
This is a very unique take on Batman and his rogues, and it's great all around.

About Catwoman's 9 lives.. giving the fact she was actually shot multiple times at the end, you could assume it was not just a possible reading, but a certainty. Though, I believe the counting of 1 bullet = 1 live is a bit pessimistic. Even in a vital organ (not heart nor brain though, but neither of them where shot I believe), it takes times to die from it. Here she was shot multiple time in a short time period. I'd say all of them count as only 1 live, and that it's also possible that the litter fall wasn't a life taken away. So there still may be some of them left to Selina.

The first was Burton making a Batman film with some of his influence this one is him given 100 percent control the theme here similar to the first is Batman and Catwoman Penguin are the same all 3 wronged by the world striking back in different ways with the rich being the real villain in Christopher Walken's character and Penguins rich parents. This one has richer themes and ideas but has trouble juggling all the characters with a less tighter script and fewer fun villains with Penguin compared to Joker even though Danny did a great job he's not on the level of Joker. This is a great sequel but the first was better being an awesome Batman film with a tighter narrative script because it didn't have as many characters to juggle.

Shame he never got the reigns to the following 2 films as that was originally the plan then it all went very very wrong for Batman films until Mr Nolan came along.
Fun fact Michelle Pfeiffer was actually gonna play Vicky Vale in the first Batman film but Michael Keaton (Real name Michael Douglas) put a stop to that as they had not long come out of a romantic relationship in real life. Guess we should all thank him for that of we may have ended up with Madonna as Catwoman now that would have been a terrible tragedy 😂

It's strange how they had Batman willing to kill when Batman's whole thing is not killing either through action or inaction.
That's why him and Catwoman were so good romantically. In the real lore, she was just a cat burglar and also never killed. They were perfect...until Talia Al Gul happened. But let's just pretend she doesn't exist because she is sort of the worst, as is her offspring.

When I first saw this movie I was scared cuz of the clowns, due to the success of 1989 Batman Tim Burton was given full reign to do whatever he wanted. In fact Mcdonalds was all set to do a Happy Meal to promote it but that idea got canceled cuz the movie was so violent. Also you recognize Pee-Wee Herman in the beginning as Penguin's Father. Bottom line it's a Tim Burton so to most people it's to dark, it's depressing and weird. Also look at what happens with Penguin he's not a psycho who becomes evil for the hell of it, he's a confused and sad misfit who's just trying to fit in.

Both McDonald's and Hasbro pulled out of their marketing contracts with WB over how overtly violent and sexual this movie is. One of my friends said Batman Returns was one nip slip or F-bomb away from being the Caped Crusader's first R-rated flick (That honor going to 2016's animated rendering of "The Killing Joke").
The Penguin/Shreck storyline is rather disjointed as it went through several rewrites. Originally Penguin was supposed to be Max's long lost elder brother, hence the obsession with Shreck and stealing of the firstborn children of Gotham's elite.

For me, I'd have to give it to Batman Returns, which is my favorite of the four Burton/Shumacher Batman movies.
The first Batman movie was written during a writer's strike, and you can tell, there's a (slight) cohesiveness to "Returns", where as the events in Batman '89 feel a lot more random. Moreover, Jack Nicholson as the Joker, for me, felt pretty derivative of things he'd already done in "Five Easy Pieces", "The Shining", "One Flew Over the Cook-coos Nest" and (much later) "The Departed", and they were much more effectively done then they were here. I'd also argue that "Returns" (along with "Edward Scissorhands") feels like one of the most personal films Burton has ever done.
All that being said, "Batman: Mask of the Phantasm" is still my all-time favorite Batman movie, with the Dark Knight being a very close second.
