Australian pianist Daniel de Borah has had critics reaching for superlatives: ‘music-making of this calibre is to be cherished’, ‘Daniel de Borah wowed the audience with his virtuosic skills’. He makes his TSO debut as soloist in Beethoven’s only minor-key piano concerto, the dramatic and exciting Piano Concerto No 3. Beethoven’s concerto is prefaced by Richard Mills’ Chorale Meditation on ‘Heut’ triumphieret Gottes Sohn’, which takes its inspiration from music by JS Bach.
After interval, dive into the hugely imaginative world of American composer Charles Ives. His Symphony No 2 is an enormous canvas that marries the grandeur of the Romantic symphony with everyday songs, ditties and anthems. Overseeing this kaleidoscopic program is Johannes Fritzsch, Principal Guest Conductor.
