hi ,from south eastern Connecticut,,thanks for all your bee ,life saving info. can in hive, one gallon frame feeders be left in hive over winter,,vs,,prying them out and putting in drawn out but empty frame
David, I would partly disagree about your poisoning answer. Last year I lost my favorite colony to poisoning. Had i acted a bit faster & removed the queen to a nuc w/workers from another colony, i could have saved her. Her own workers filtered the poison, took the hit, and kept her from exposure. The queen died from cold & lack of food as her attendants rapidly died off. I just wasn't fast enough to get her into a safer, warmer environment. 😢
November 28th Christmas Day. 😂 everyone keeps saying it’s December. It really feels like this year is over. I hope I can get your courses this sale!!! When you combine beehives this late, are you culling the spare queen?
Just a thought. Has anyone tried combining a small hive beetle trap with a mite treatment by adding the Oxalic acid to an oil in the trap. Would allow it to be a slow release and the one drawback I can see is if it would repel the small hive beetles. I have had animals before that we treated for ear mites with mineral oil (baby oil). Might not replace the strips for shock treatments but could be an alternate method for steady control. I have seen reports that the vapor method can harm the bees at times but was thinking a mixed oil might curb that issue? The R&D is above my level but would like to see the idea tested or a reason it is a bad one.
I have a friend who is concerned about reusing wax recovered from frames (by melting) from a dead out. If you melt the wax from old frames and then apply it to new plastic foundation with a paint roller to help them get started drawing it out, is there a risk of spreading some hidden disease or pathogen to the new frame because of reusing that wax ?
Thinking about bee keeping next year I want to buy package bees but All I have is plastic foundation will they build up enough comb before winter to survive?
They should be fine if you get them in early Spring and feed them some 1:1 sugar water to help draw out the wax on the plastic foundation. It will also help if you coat the fountain with extra wax. Good luck next year 👍😁🐝💜🌼🍯
The Layens hive I have just completed my layens hive box I have not built the frames yet, my concern is the spacing I have never used the 1.5 inch spacing I have always had foundationless frames and the bees here seam smaller then normal and they sometimes try to build 9 frames in a 8 frame hive, I am thinking I should stick with 1 and 3/8 spacing, you have a layens hive what are your thoughts on layens 1.5 inch frame spacing, Thanks.
You got that right, I am retired now and the 36 dollars for 50 pounds of sugar is to high, i am only gonna buy 4 bags next year the bees can keep all their honey except 1 frame each hive if they can spare is for me.
The online courses are well worth it! Got mine back in July and you can go to each video per what time of year it is for info
David, thank you for answering all of the great questions! Take a look at the Solo Stove fire pit. No more smoke chasing you.
My hives are looking...Squirrel!!!...great
