Building the Porch Roof, Paradise Point - Ep 20
Вставка
- Опубліковано 17 жов 2024
- Today we start by attaching a screw jack to the bottom of all 4 cedar porch posts to allow for the settling of the cabin. This is necessary when building with green logs. We will be lifting the beam with a snatch block system, something I have never attempted before. Then finally, up with the rafters and metal.

Great craftsmanship especially considering the temperatures!
Howdy Gregg- thank you so much for the kind words. It’s been a long, hot summer for sure. Take care and God’s blessings to you
Always a pleasure to get a video from my favourite craftsman. Many thanks to you for your work and your dear wife for her editing. May you stay in God's graces for many years ahead
Howdy Paul- thank you so much for the kindness. I appreciate the Lady also because I couldn’t do anything without her. Hope all is well with you on the other side of the pond. Take care my friend. God’s blessings to you
As always a great job Paul, it is good to see the tin go on and the trees are still green despite the heat. It must smell amazing in the cabin. Take care.
Howdy Simon- thank you so much for coming by and visiting and for the kind words of encouragement. A lot of the trees have shed some of their leaves because of the drought. We may have an early fall this year. Yes, the cabin did smell good while the cedar was fresh. Hope y’all are doing well over there. Looking forward to seeing your next video. Take care my friend. God bless
Thank you, brother Paul, for sharing your videos and your wisdom with us. It's always a blessing to learn from you.
Howdy brother- thank you so much for watching our videos and the nice comment. Hope all is well. God bless
Flawless! Peace brothers!

Good to see it coming along, in spite of the hot weather! Take care of yourself. See ya later.🤠
Howdy Brother Art- it’s getting there. Ready for the fall weather to get here. Hope y’all are doing well. God bless
Red cedar is beautiful but has to be replaced within 10-15 years
Love you’re work
Howdy y’all- yes, it is beautiful. This is all red heart and won’t get a lot of weather on it so it should be fine. Take care and God bless
Ohhh Paul so beautiful! I’m glad you used a pulley to help! I feel so privileged and blessed to have seen this work of art with my own eyes and I will get to see it completed!
Howdy Jan- thank you so much for the kind words. Yeah, you gotta come back and see us. Take care and God’s blessings to y’all
Looking absolutely amazing Mr. Paul.
Howdy Donald- thank you so much. God’s blessings to y’all

Howdy Debra- it’s coming along. I love the porch too. Thank you so much for watching our video. God bless
Your very welcome 😘 till the next one 🙏😘
Hi Paul. As always I'm learning something new, watching your videos. Those screw jacks are smart, and I know i don't have reason to be envious, but that red cedar are absolutly wonderful. I wish I had some of that here in the swedish woods. Keep those videos coming - I just love the way you explain things and show us how to do it right and precise.
All the best from the swedish woods. 🌲
Your long distance apprentice Michael. 🍀
Howdy Michael- so thankful we have connected through UA-cam and Facebook. Yes, our red cedar is a beautiful wood and weather resistant. It has a wonderful aroma also. Around here people who had hunting dogs used it in their doghouse’s to keep the ticks down. When I run it through my shop planer I put it in big bags for whoever wants it. Hope you have a great week. God bless
Looks great! Glad the pulley system worked out on that beam. Always a fan of your craftsmanship.
Take care!
Howdy brother- thank you so much. I was glad to get the beam up. Had a little hiccup but it worked. Your project is looking great! God bless
Thank you for sharing, Paul. I always watch in amazement at your craft. Magnifico! 😊
Howdy- thank you so much for the kind words. I sure appreciate it. Take care and God’s blessings to you
Awesome as usual. I wish we were closer to sip a tall glass of ice tea with Y’all. Take care and God bless.
Howdy y’all- thank you so much for the kind words. Yep, I figure we could go through some sweet tea pretty quick lol. God’s blessings to y’all
Hi Paul! Your pulley system was genius! But It looked you needed to borrow our brother-in-law Chris to tag line the other end of your beam🤣🤣🤣We had the same adventure with some of our logs even with our little crane😁That is going to be one beautiful cabin! Love the porch!👍👍👍Sure glad the heat has finally let up! Take care my friend!
Howdy y’all- the pulley idea was Brother Wayne’s. It worked great but I had a little bit of excitement for a second or two. It would have been better to have someone on the other end but someone had to drive the truck to pull with. Yes, the cooler weather is most welcome! We gotta get together soon. Take care and God bless
Love watching a master at work!👍👍👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🙏🙏🙏🙏
Howdy y’all- thank you so much for the kind words and for watching our videos. God bless
It's looking good down there.
Howdy Brother- thank you so much for the kind words. I sure appreciate it. Take care and God’s blessings to y’all
Gotta love Wayner for going from a office job that has AC back into the heat and using his hands. Luv you Wayner, I need some more of your butter when you make a new batch.
Howdy buddy- I’ll sure pass the message to him. I sure do enjoy having him around. God bless

Howdy Michael- thank you so much for the kind words. Hope all is well with you. God bless
I bet it was 10 or 20 degrees hotter on that roof than on the ground, I know you were glad to get that done.
Great work as usual.
Thank you for making these videos.
Howdy y’all- yeah, it was hot on the roof for sure. I was checking for leaks with the way I was pouring sweat lol. Thank you so much for watching the video. God bless
That cedar looks beautiful, nice work as always.

Howdy y’all- thank you so much for the kind words. Take care and God’s blessings to you
masterful artwork
Howdy Bill- thank you so much for the kind words. God bless you
Hi Paul, nice to see you at work. The way to lift the beam with the cables is clever. Allow me to ask you a question that may seem silly to you: is the land on which you are building the log cabin yours or is it a free space in the woods? However, the work is progressing well. Congratulations to you and your brother. Blessings my Friend.
Howdy FD- so happy to hear from you again. The cable lift worked well considering it slipped out of my hand haha. The cabin is on private property that belongs to my Brother Wayne. Hope you are doing well. God’s blessings to you
Paul eu já tá com saudades 😃 e como é bom te vê,como me orgulho de você e de seus feitos.um abraço. God Bless
Howdy Mira- thank you so much for coming by and watching our videos. Hope all is well with you and your family. Take care and God’s blessings to you
Howdy Paul. Good thing you moved when you did. Glad you didn't get hit. God Bless
Howdy Kevin- yeah, I can move fast when I need to. To be honest, I knew it could take a ride but wasn’t expecting it to swing. I was trying to watch what was going on and giving signals to Brother Wayne and keep it steady. I needed two of me lol. Hope all is well with y’all. God bless
Man that porch sure does look good, I wish I had some cedar to used, I do have a friend bringing some for me to cut in half’s with him, I love the way the cedar looks, and I sure do like the way you make your settling beams and post, y’all take care and try to stay cool, I know it’s been crazy hot, we’re holler at you on the next one, take care.
Howdy Roy- thank you so much for the kind words. Would you send me an email at thebeardedcarpenter8@gmail.com. I can get you lots of red cedar. Not sure how far down in Texas y’all are. Take care and God bless y’all
Hello! Brother y'all doing amazing work as always that sure is some nice cedar! thank's for sharing! tell brother Wayne howdy God Bless you'all !!!
Howdy Brother Jeff- thank you so much. We have an abundance of red cedar around here but it’s rare to get a great big one. Makes pretty lumber. Hope y’all are doing well over there. Take care and God’s blessings to y’all

With the weather that hot I bet you felt like two baked potatoes building a house! :-D
Howdy Dave- yep, that’s just about how we felt lol. We’re finally getting some rain which is bringing the temperatures down. Ready for fall weather. Thank you so much for watching the video. God bless
Great job Paul.

Howdy John- thank you so much. Yes, I go through a lot of liquids in this heat. God bless
I have to admit...the rigging look like something I would do :) Looking real good...great you got the roof up...try and not get to hot Bro. Paul...tell Wayne hello Blessings
Howdy Brother Duke- Brother Wayne came up with the cable rigging. He’s a little sharper than I am lol. After I put the last screw in we knocked off for the day and went to the shade. I’ll sure tell him hello for you. Take care and God’s blessings to you
Looking good buddy.
Howdy David- thank you so much for the nice comment. God bless
Thank You 🙏 Paul
Howdy Mary- thank you so much for watching the video. God’s blessings to you
Hey Paul,
Excellent work as usual. I have a question about the porch post settling system. Is it secured to the post to prevent a strong wind from lifting the porch roof from the all thread rod?
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and precise skills.
Howdy y’all- thank you so much for the kind words. The posts have to be able to settle as the logs settle. After the settling they can be anchored solid to the porch. Where this cabin is located it’s in a pretty sheltered area. Take care and God bless y’all
Thank you👍👍👍
Howdy Mike- I sure appreciate you watching the video. God bless you
Great looking work looks awesome there eh! Thanks for sharing
Howdy Denis- thank you so much for watching and the kind words. Hope y’all are doing well up there. Take care and God bless
Thank you once again for posting a video, love the dovetail cabin builds. I do have a question for you. Will the tie beams or the porch rafters be secured to the wall timber by any other means? I was thinking a diminished haunch pocket cut into the wall timber would give bearing weight stability and not solely rely on the screws shear strength (I realize these tie beams don't carry weight other than their own). Am I over thinking this and making it more complicated than required? With my total lack of experience and your demonstrated mastery with this building system I feel silly questioning how you did this but the thought came to mind. I know with stick building a joist hanger or similar product would be required (and would look way out of place here). What are your thoughts?
Howdy Dinos-as you stated these tie beam carry no weight. I have cut shallow pockets in the logs to set them in. In this case they actually were holding the porch beam steady until the rafters were put on. Thank you so much for the comment. Take care and God bless
God Bless
🙏😇🙏
Howdy Jason- thank you so much for watching the video. God’s blessings to you also
Yay!
Howdy y’all- thank you so much for watching the video. God bless you
Amazing💖🥰🍻🥳🇬🇧💪
Howdy y’all- thank you so much. God bless
100?🥵 I couldn't do it! How much settling would you anticipate, or is it more to keep everything level?
Take care Paul, see you on the next one✌
Howdy Marc- yeah, the heat has been brutal this summer. There has been quite a bit of settling take place already. I just like to have a little bit of “insurance “ when it comes to settling. I normally allow 1/2” per foot with the yellow pine and that works out pretty good. Take care and God bless
Gotta get creative to get the job done 👍
Howdy Cory- yeah, this was a bit faster than what I would usually do. Hope you are doing well. God bless
❤️
Howdy Amy- thank you so much for watching our video. God bless you
