My grandpa was in this invasion. Master Chief Bill Pepperell, Navy corpsman that was with a marine division on the third wave. His stories were legendary. When he first got to the beach he and his buddy were tasked with digging out the field hospital. A mortar round fell between both of them, didn't detonate. They started digging faster. Miss his stories he was the greatest man I've ever met.
My great great uncle fought in Iwo Jima he was a Sargent and he was one of the men who put up the American flag. He ended up catching a sniper bullet diving to save his best friend he died half an hour after he was shot

If I’m not mistaken I think the Americans bombed Iwo Jima for weeks. The fact that the Japanese tunnels and fortifications held up during the bombing campaign is just astounding.

Great video. It’s one thing to see the battle in movies but you’ve gotta see the actual footage to understand the brutality. Books and documentaries would talk about the intense shelling but the image of it never sank in until I watched this. I mean how the hell does anybody survive all that bombardment?? In the pacific war naval bombardments weren’t that effective air power and weapons that use flame were very effective the Japanese knew the capabilities of the USN they were well dug in so I know how much air power and naval power is talked about in the pacific war but it really was all done on the ground but yes air power and naval power were crucial

I'd imagine there would be casualties from described causes but considering the garrison was Iver 20 thousand strong its highly unlikely that half were killed by the bombardment.
The Navy hit that Island with all it had, unfortunately many of the Japanese were deep inside the mountain caves, beneath 100s of feet of solid rock, I have read that the bombardment partially destabilized the mountain though, and at least some of the Japanese must have died from cave-ins caused by the bombardment.

I like the chronological order of these clips/footage. From initial bombardment and bombing to clear the landing zones then the amphibious landing. Follow after that is the naval support and battery/trench set up then the aftermath and the famous victory flag. Truly a historical moment.

They were men, that’s why. Part of the greatest generation known to man, they knew how to survive. They had to serve their country, they had no other option.
The music killed it, it takes the realism away. Nobody can evan realize the scale of the battle that happened there, 1600lbs minimum bombs 5ft tall landing every 5 seconds for days. All of the smaller cannons just raining shells like rice at a wedding, and they were dug so far into that rock that they just kept popping up like damn cockroaches for more.
Can you even imagine being a 17-18 year old kid fresh out of boot camp, loading onto the assault craft, seeing all this around you, approaching the beach and waiting for the ramp to drop. And yet they went forward because that's what needed to be done. My grandfather was on one of those destroyers, two of my friends fathers were Marines that went in. Whoever wrote the book "The Greatest Generation" was spot on. I can't believe people actually criticized that book. And look at the streets of the big cities today, and the selfishness of the youth and the millennials.

@Andi Rachmat yes. But it's tactical failure of the attack planning team. They knew big guns have been placed at key positions under Atlantic wall plan by Axis. And soldiers will face fire right on the head. For any such operation, heavy bombardment either by bomber plane or battleship or destroyer is needed to neutralise the attacking positions before sending troops. Can't imagine the brutal slaughtering on the beach that day. In movie it's shown to a degree but couldn't understand as a common man why the operation planned that way. I mean as a soldier I would want a fair chance to fight before dieing than getting killed by facing high calibre fire of cannons. This is what high command has to think and assess cause ground troops believe that most of the risks have been calculated before permitting such an operation. Once u land on the enemy territory u r next step could be last.

During the invasion of Tarawa, they miss judged the tides for the Invasion, some of the landing craft could not get over the reef. 200 yards offshore the Marines had to disembark and wade 200 yards to the beach under five. IT WAS A BLOOD BATH FOR THE MARINES.

I dont understand how any piece of artillery or pillbox would survive that, it seems every single inch of that rock was bombed, how were they able to move a huge anti tank gun to the surface or even the general still have a command post with vantage point, i would think every dug in crevice would have collapsed with all the vibration. i know they were underground but it just blows my mind that the japanese were able to put up that fight even after the horror that must have been being inside the caves during the bombardment.

It didn't completely get rid of them, but at least half of japanese casualties from the battle were from the bombardment
