    It’s a shame. All that shelling for 3 days and we still lost thousands of marines.

    My grandpa was in this invasion. Master Chief Bill Pepperell, Navy corpsman that was with a marine division on the third wave.
    His stories were legendary. When he first got to the beach he and his buddy were tasked with digging out the field hospital. A mortar round fell between both of them, didn't detonate. They started digging faster. Miss his stories he was the greatest man I've ever met.

    This is how they should have handled Normandy rather that letting ill protected allied soldiers face the hot lead balls fired by Axis. So many soldiers died in the LPDs without even landing on the beach.

    • @Anant0909
      @Anant0909 3 роки тому

      @Andi Rachmat yes. But it's tactical failure of the attack planning team. They knew big guns have been placed at key positions under Atlantic wall plan by Axis. And soldiers will face fire right on the head. For any such operation, heavy bombardment either by bomber plane or battleship or destroyer is needed to neutralise the attacking positions before sending troops. Can't imagine the brutal slaughtering on the beach that day. In movie it's shown to a degree but couldn't understand as a common man why the operation planned that way. I mean as a soldier I would want a fair chance to fight before dieing than getting killed by facing high calibre fire of cannons. This is what high command has to think and assess cause ground troops believe that most of the risks have been calculated before permitting such an operation. Once u land on the enemy territory u r next step could be last.

      During the invasion of Tarawa, they miss judged the tides for the Invasion, some of the landing craft could not get over the reef. 200 yards offshore the Marines had to disembark and wade 200 yards to the beach under five. IT WAS A BLOOD BATH FOR THE MARINES.

    UA-cam has flagged this as offensive or inappropriate to some people. This is history! What about the thousands of Sailors and Marines who died in this battle. If it wasn't for them you would be speaking Japanese. Men fought and died so that precious UA-cam monitors could be offended.

    I dont understand how any piece of artillery or pillbox would survive that, it seems every single inch of that rock was bombed, how were they able to move a huge anti tank gun to the surface or even the general still have a command post with vantage point, i would think every dug in crevice would have collapsed with all the vibration. i know they were underground but it just blows my mind that the japanese were able to put up that fight even after the horror that must have been being inside the caves during the bombardment.
