      Snapon just feels good to you because you spent a ton of money on it, so subconsciously you have to justify your spending. For 99.9% of the users, the icon can do everything a Snapon can. It’s just that smarter people know how to spend their money while Snapon guys are constantly making monthly payments. The choice is yours 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Nothing wrong with "copying" a successful design. A company is ideally supposed to actually pay attention to the market, see what's in most demand, observe the most effective designs, and incorporate them into their own business model. Snap On shouldn't have a legal monopoly on anything. Companies aren't entitled to a profit, it's part of taking on risk as an entrepreneur. If you want the benefit of getting rich, you have to also accept the possibility of going out of business or losing money to competitors. This incentivizes businesses to innovate and keep competing, or else other companies will. The result is that the customer wins out, which is the way it should be. I don't care about Snap On, Icon, or any other brands. I care about quality, value, and competitive options.

      @@Tools_and_Guitars The stuff isn’t bad, I just wish they wouldn’t stack it up against Snap On. I have the wrenches, Icon = Carlyle… A Taiwanese copy down to the font used on the ID stamping. The sockets are also copies but the chrome isn’t as good nor are they the right hardness to be comparable. There is no mid length option and most important to me, no 12 point. Yes as far as Taiwanese tools go, the Icon stuff is on par with most of the Apex stuff but Should not be compared to Snap On as most of the stuff just isn’t in the same league. Will it work, absolutely it will. I have a cart full of their stuff which I should do a video on. I got it all in 1 summer for a fraction of what my Snap On stuff cost but the whole point is this:
      I keep the Icon stuff out in the open so the other guys don’t go in my rollaway and put their dick beaters on my good tools. If they are going to borrow something and not put it back, I’ll be damned if I’m going to be replacing $20 sockets and $125 ratchets every few days.

The story i heard from some one working for snap on is the had a fall out with one of there tool designers and after leaving he went to work for harbor freight. So if this is true and he designed pliers for snap on. Then you could say he didn’t steal someone else’s hard work for a design he reused his design. 😁 if this story is true. I buy HF tools occasionally. I just rebuild bikes in my garage I’m not making my income on it like professional car mechanics and other people. My problem is my work bench is bloody mess. I do most of my work on the bike when it’s in my Park Tool service stand. What I discovered I need more is to be able to find a tool. I decided I need several cheaper tools than one expensive one I can’t find. A hex key set is a good example. I have about 3 metric and a couple fractional. Lots of hex heads on bikes. I always leave HF with a cheapie pick set, magnetic parts trays and zip ties. I have old wheel bearings sitting in parts trays for months at time until I need the tray, the parts are usually long past relevant and I put it in the spares bin. Those HF pliers would suit my needs just fine.

The handle’s most likely wouldn’t hold up like knipex but they are for sure more comfortable. Same with snap on I have gotten a few of their pliers and can’t say the comfort is much different they both feel good the only thing I don’t like about my snap on ones is my grips slide off a lot.

    I have to agree with you when it comes to Icon tools. I believe Harbor Freight has the potential to produce their own tool designs and get their name out under Icon line. There's a ton of ideas and designs Harbor Freight could go for but it doesnt seem like that will happen. Its like buying your one dream car you cant afford but decide to opt for the replica. I stand behind other companies because of using them at my jobs. Cornwell, Gearwrench, Matco, Astro Pneumatic, Snap On, Mac. I stand behind Cornwell because despite not having a Cornwell dealer down here in Florida, my Blue Power sockets from Cornwell havent broke on me and Ive had them since end of 2020. Best sockets I bought for my money and I hope to see a Cornwell dealer down here in Florida someday

    I agree! I would like to see Icon be a little more original with their designs. Icon could have included a cutter with said pliers, and a more ergonomical grip. If I were in a position in Harbor Freight that designed tools, I would have given them a more distinctive look to them rather than copying Snap-On. I'd give them more of a European or Japanese design, combined with US designs. I don't hate Icon, they have their place. Some of their stuff is pretty good, but it's no where near the quality of Tool Truck brands, US Industrial brands, German and Japanese professional brands. Icon is a mid grade tool product it's comparable to other mid grade brands such as Carlyle, Tekton and Gearwrench.

    I recently bought a set of the Snap On LN47ACF pliers with some Christmas money. I don't have access to a Snap On truck so I ordered them from Snap On online. The Icon line of pliers is pretty excellent for the price. For the price. For tools I use the most I prefer to spend the cash on the brand I want. Generally Snap-On. As my usage goes down I often downgrade the brand. Same goes for most tools for me. People also seem to love the ease of warranting certain brands. That is a great point, but it would seem to me that a brand that generally does NOT require it to be warrantied is better.

    I’ve got snap on, Mac, matco craftsman etc. big brands make a good product but damn expensive. Sometimes you can get by without having to spend Bukhara money. Example are pliers and impacts. I’ve rocked Pittsburg sockets and IR sockets from northern tools for over a decade without ever breaking one. And this is wrenching at a CAT dealer everyday. So be wise with your purchases, regardless is the brand. Also warranting these big brand are a pain if there is no truck around you, icon = easy replacement

    I know people who use Icon tools and I can assure you that they do not compare them to snapon nor do they feel like they have a snap on. Honestly speaking, if we can all afford snapon we would all definitely buy it. But icon tools are ok they are not the best we know this. Not everybody is a professional mechanic nor does everybody have a need for professional tools. Needless to say, the ones comparing these tools to snapon are Harbor freight not the actual buyers/users.

    Tool companies have been ripping each other off forever, look at channel lock pliers, everyone makes them and they all are a rip off. Part of harbor freights plan was to copy snap on to help cut costs that results in cheaper tools. If u don’t like it don’t buy them

      They won't sue them because the patent is worthless when it's being made globally that's why patents are garbage now because all that stuff is territorial any more the internet has opened up this market.

    cp I would love for you to look at the Icon 59169 triple slip joint pliers that are identical knockoffs of the 47ACF’s. I’ve not seen another company make anything similar to these telling me HF does make some stuff that epauto and other Amazon brands don’t have. Holding the icons and snapon acfs next to each other in my shop they have the exact same measurements, thickness, teeth texture and everything. My guess is the patent expired being that the acf’s are about 5 years old if I remember correctly.

    • @CPthetooladdict
      @CPthetooladdict  Рік тому +1

      Patents don't matter globally only in America just a reason why these knockoffs are getting out of control it's only a problem to manufacture in the USA but not resale them or wholesale them.

    Personally I think there are better options for the price of the icon however if you are married to the harbor freight theme the icon line is pretty good. That being said I would recommend buying everything cheap and then replacing what you use on a daily basis with better brands like snap on

    But that's not the case they didn't steal it ,the patent ran out so others can use it just like the Benchmade axis lock now spiderco to Ozark trail uses it just calls it something else.besides if it's snap on they just bought it from somebody else and put there name on it.

    Can’t say that I disagree with you at all CP. I would rather have less high end, original tools than to have more tools that are a blatant copy of the original. It just seems wrong to me. It’s on a totally different scale but it’s almost like an imitation Rolex compared to the original. To me there’s no pride in ownership of a blatant copy.
