      That therein lies the problem. Olympics are not about the dance. It's about the sport. Power, physicality and presence are going to be of higher value. Artistry and musicality will ALWAYS score lower. Holy crap Evan's performance was breathtaking and I totally get why he won.

    • @rus1285

      @@mrs.schmenkman Olympics may be all about the sport but figure skating transcends the regular definition or sport...technical skills are the meat and potatoes but the dance is part of what makes a great Olympic champion (e.g. Yu-Na Kim). And Daisuke was.given his due in the PCS and was way ahead of Plushenko there, so that was the right call. And thank you for your kind words for Evan Lysacek...he gave it everything he had and showed us his skills and his heart and soul. Among the greatest underdog wins in the Olympics.

  • @kaorumikeko

    Takahashi should have won the SP. He was undermarked with PCS while the judges inflated Lysacek's PCS. It is beyond laughable that Lysacek received higher PCS than Takahashi closer to Lambiel.

    Every time I rewatch this I'm reminded of the immense injustice of Lysacek's SP getting such a high component score when he frequently wasn't even timing his choreography with the music, in a competition where Daisuke Takahashi was flawlessly on point for pretty much every note. Frankly Lysacek's component score should be less than Denis Ten's, who did far better and mostly just didn't have as technical a program as the older and more experienced skaters.

    • @latininxtc
      @latininxtc 9 років тому +11

      Antonio Thunder hunter Unfortunately it's because of these Olympics changes were made in how the Quad was valued. During these Olympics the quad's value was rewarded the same, but if you fall you will not get a huge amount of credit for it like you do now. This upset a lot of people because Evan won (and rightfully so) without having a quad in his program, but with the point system a win IS possible so long as you add on high-grade spin and footwork elements on top of take advantage of the 10% bonus after the halfway mark. It's the way you play the system is what gets you the win. Sure both the top 2 skaters fell, but the Japanese skater edged out Patrick Chan because his elements were of higher grade than Patrick's.

    2:29:16 Stephane Lambiel of Switzerland with the truest interpretation of the William Tell Overture. You cannot interpret it any closer into skating as this. And as usual, with his wonderful, expressive and strong skating. The William Tell Overture is a very difficult piece to skate to. The best ever interpretations of it are Lambiel's program and Tonya Harding (88-89 season).

    I know that there is constant arguing about who deserved to win the gold. I don't really like either skater or their style that much. When I watched this live I was backing plushenko over Lysacek, but Lysacek had the cleaner FS and had far better spins and transitions than plushenko. Many of Plushenko's jumps had scratchy landings and his first axel wasn't good.
    The skater I enjoyed watching the most was Daisuke Takahashi, so expressive, but his mistake in the free sadly lost him the gold.

      Rira. N Nope. Sorry. Your wrong. Watch it again. Lysacek was miles ahead on what is important. I haven't watched skating since the 90s and I had no idea who had won -- but as soon as I saw his performance it was clear he stole the show. When a man commands the ice the judges take heed. The artistry and musicality is always secondary. It's not a dance competition it's a sport. You have to have power and strength and control first...then you can flap your arms around all you want and wiggle your butt.

    I keep going back to the lp and if it had been just a bit cleaner, I would whole heartedly agree that he deserved the gold. He skated an amazing short but was underscored. I am all for that. He should have had a bit more of a lead. Not 5 pts but at least 3.

    oh boy... I shoulda rewatched the short programs b4 the free skate. cuz when I watched that first, Evan Lysachek had the cleaner routine and I rested on my previous opinion. But after this... I dunno. Evan's short program was boring, didn't really move me. Plushenko's... I almost wanted cry cuz it was that good. The best I'd seen of him other than the free skate for Sochi's Team competition (haven't gotten around to his gold-winning run in Torino yet but I'm getting there).
    On another note, Johnny Weir looked amazing all around in Vancouver and I think he was underrated big time :-P so entertaining to watch

      @latininxtc 9 років тому +6

      It's not about how "beautiful" it looks anymore you're living in the past. It has been about every technical element for almost 10 years now. So you can do all these "beautiful" movements but if they don't add up to a higher grade, they mean NOTHING! Plushenko has crappy grade footwork, spins and transitions and this is why he lost it. He was too arrogant to think that he can come back and win skating under a system that has changed since he last skated 4 years prior.

    • @user-oz9mp3fe6t
      @user-oz9mp3fe6t 8 років тому

      +chipperterri Check older Evan's videos like I did and you'see him doing a quad.....I think it was in US nationals or in another competition that I saw him, not worlds or OG. I don't really remember which video was but he can do quads.

    • @cherylhulting1301
      @cherylhulting1301 5 років тому +2

      @@latininxtc None of these boys are doing these things without Plushenko. He set the standard they follow. Russians in general don't do much with transitions; that's a difference between skating styles between East and West. Plushenko's spins had actually improved and how on earth do you give tech scores to others over the man who actually did a quad jump? Plushenko didn't deserve the gold medal (neither did Evan, actually), but the score given to Evgeni for the short program was a joke.
      By the way, Plushenko was a great technical innovator, but artistry still matters.

    @bayoucool I agree. It is such a shame that 35 years after John Curry and Toller Cranston, the judges will still not accept a graceful and classically beautiful skater. It's as if all the battles that John and Toller fought back in the 1970's have to fought all over again. I think Lysacek is mediocre and boring. Technically he is not as good as Plushenko and artistically he's not as good as Weir, Lambiel or Takahashi.

    誰が好きかとか、どのプログラムが好きとかは置いといて、点数おかしいだろwww
    プルシェンコのテクニカルが51点台なのは分かるが、コンポーネンツが39点台ってwww
    無理やり下げた感しかない(°д°)
    高橋大輔はすごく良かった!見ていてワクワクした!
    ジョニー・ウィアーやパトリック・チャンや織田君、小塚君、上げきれないけど素敵な演技が沢山で素晴らしいオリンピックだった。
    ジャッジが壊れている以外は。

    Lysacek should have been 4th at this competition. Yeah, life sucks and even figure skating is rigged sometimes. For those who don't know the true results were
    1. Plushenko
    2. Takahashi
    3. Lambiel
    4. Lysacek (not sure if he deserves 4th place though, Nobunari Oda performed better)

    Poor Jeremy. He tries so hard but when he gets in front of a world audience, he chokes. He is a strong skater and could win the gold at the Olympics or Worlds. I hope he comes back for one last hurrah but I do believe he is done. :(

    2:29:18 Stephane Lambiel and Tonya Harding, the greatest and truest ever interpretations of the William Tell Overture. Lambiel's was in 2010, Harding's was in 1989. Interestingly, both of their William Tell programs were short (technical) programs!

    Nobunari Oda had the best jump landings I've ever seen. His landings were like buttuh.
    Brian Joubert - He melted the ice with those sexy opening hip moves; Hot D*MN. I like the music and program for him, but it felt too much like he was copying Yagudin. Didn't Yag use the same piece of music in his race car SP a few years prior?

      He was a great artist whom you could tell lived and breathed skating. But when you compete as an artist, you may get left behind by those who compete as athletes.
      Johnny Weir's programs were already being criticized for not having sufficient technical merit. This was not new to these Olympics.

    Plushenko was the best at this SP. he was the only man who clean 4-3 combination, and he didn’t mistake. If the OG held in other country, he would given 3~4 points more. But that OG was in Vancouver, and all American-Canadian press were crazy to block his 2nd gold. And finally they achieved their goal… even they denied the history of the technical development in men’s figure skating. An OC without quad?? Not in 1980’s, in 2010?? HAHAHA that’s a ridiculous! That’s not a matter of judging system. Either old system or new system, the result of 2010 OG was a big shame of this sport. In 2010 they tried turn back time at the age of no quad, because they knew they had no skater who can win Plushenko. So they denied the history, they denied the quad, and they set up to take a gold from Russia or Europe. In fact, Plushenko was right. Time proves it. Look at now, without quad, no one can win the men’s competition. I’m not an american(you know my English writing isn’t well) or Russian or European. In my opinion, sorry for Lysacek, but his 3A in 2010 OG wasn’t better than even Mao Asada! Men’s OC and Women’s silver medalist have a same technical level in their program? What a weird!

      Han, I agree. I adore Evgeni and although I still feel his long program in Vancouver wasn't quite strong enough for the win, his points about the quad and the importance of technical innovation in the sport were well taken.

    • @rus1285
      @rus1285 Рік тому

      The Olympic gold is not for technical innovation. It's for being best in show on that night. And Lysacek was best in show.

    Lady Gaga's Poker Face playing in the background as Johnny Weir skates off and waits for his marks is fantastic lol. Do they intentionally play the track the skater has prepared for the gala performance? Or is this just a wonderful coincidence?

    @veryWild5 Oh yes, easy program clean skate. But Lysa wasn't so clean, as the audience thought. Plushenko's jumps were landed-neither two-foot nor underrotation but Evan did mistakes-which are not visible to non-specialists. The european and asian experts saw them. And it was so outrageous how after the short program the judges gave both of them the same score so Evan could have a chance at beating Plushenko. Plushenko's short program was so much superior to Lycacek's.

    I think there's some major subjectivity going on with these comments. I'm not saying the judges didn't make some minor judging mistakes, but for those who know the nuances of the sport, several of the remarks are off base. Weir, for ex, placed where he did, not b/c "the judges cannot accept a man who is feminine," but b/c his flip took off on the wrong edge (both short and free) and b/c his transitions weren't as intricate. He's a hell of a talent, but that's just one example of biased posting.
