A Tribute to Aaron Spears - U Don't Have To Call (Drum Transcription) by Lewis Partridge.
You've probably already noticed that I'm a huge fan of Aaron Spears. I really can't think of another drummer that inspired me to the extent that Aaron has. To say I was absolutely gutted to hear of his passing last year is a real understatement, but I was determined to do something in tribute to the memory of my drumming hero.
We spent most of 2020 in Covid lockdown here in the UK and I decided to dust of my transcription skills and transcribe some of Aarons videos. It really helped me to not go completely insane not having any opportunities to play throughout the lockdown. I figured it would be a great challenge, once the world returned to normality, to learn to play some of his patterns, left handed stickings and all.
I started with the video of him playing U Don't Have to Call with Usher in Glasgow back in 2012, check the link in the description. I actually sent him a copy of the transcription once I was done and he had the kindest words to say about it. That seems to be a resounding part of his legacy, that not only was he one of the greatest drummers to ever do it, but he was also a really nice guy.
He had sent me so many messages of encouragement over the years and I really felt blessed that he'd taken the time out of his obviously busy schedule to do so.
While he was still with us, I wasn't going to share the transcription, aside from with my students, as I figured these are HIS ideas and it was up to him to show them if he saw fit. But now, in the event of his untimely passing, I figured it would make a really great tribute to do a video of me playing the intro for the song with the transcription included.
I'm kinda still processing the idea that he is no longer with us and it was hard filming this without getting choked up. This really was a huge loss for the drumming community. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and those that were close to him.

I didn't even know Aaron had died. I'm gutted. Last time I saw him in a video, he was presenting Zildjian live and seemed so happy.
