Hi there we are the proud owners of Sky Dance 17yr mare bred on your farm I was your neighbor many moons ago I used to ride by on my bay standard bred you even rescued me on time when my bridal broke outside of your driveway you also said I should get one on your Canadians, well we finally have one she is my husband's horse I lived down the driveway by the Cowanburgs, and we love her to peices
My horse is 1/2 cheval canadien and 1/2 standardbred. He’s 23 now, was a PMU, and has got foot like rocks (never needed shoes) and is still sounds as the first day I backed him. He’s big, 16.3 like his mom, but all dark brown and still a dream come true.
Farm I used to visit had 2 of these a black stallion, and a chestnut mare. They were very adorable and playful. They kind of remind me of the Spanish Andulusian with the thicker necks, they aren't extremely tall either which is the perfect size for me.
I help take care of an IR Canadian horse. When I first layed eyes on her I said to myself, "I'd love to get my hands on that horse!". A couple of months later here I am taking care of her. She is 24 years old and delightful. Rolls in the mud too much though!
My 8th Great Grandfather (Francois Belanger) was a big part of settling Quebec , "The New France" in the 1600's, He came over from the Normandy area of France, with Captain Gifford in 1635 I believe it was. He owned some of the first Canadian horses. Great history..!
Thank you for an interesting video. I was unfamiliar with this breed, & look forward to doing some research. They are good looking; I like their size & hardiness. Thanks!
Cheval Canadien - The Canadian Horse: Canada's National Horse; Quebec's Heritage Horse and Provincial Treasure. Genetic studies show that Canadian horses show no evidence of a relationship with Arabian, Andalusian, or Barb breeds, or with Shires or Clydesdales. They descended from horses sent to New France by King Louis XIV in 1665. The horses were a mix of breeds from Normandy and Brittany, France. And I would not be surprised to learn that they share a common ancestor with the Mérens. According to History, the Sun King knew his horses and was proud of his stables; odds are high the foundation horses he sent to New France would not have been mixed breeds, as suggested in this video, but rather quality purebreds of different French breeds, which were, through selective breeding, used to create the Cheval Canadien.
I love horses...I want to save Canadian breed....looking forward to go in Canada and want to make future with horses. Canadian horse lover can contact me
I have 3 Canadian horses, they are beautiful, intelligent with lovely smooth gaits. A most underestimated breed.

As a quebecers, sure I'm proud, but it would be nice if Canada didn't forget the Newfoundland pony also.
I agree! I’m from Newfoundland and very worried about the Newfoundland pony.

Nice I learned something new. I was raised in sask
Why would you continue to breed these horses, when there are plenty of Canadian horses in the wild that need rescueing?
Are our canadian mustangs adoptable?
who else came here from listening archagathus?
Please for the love of God sweat your horse's neck and put them on a diet before your horse breaks the crest of his neck
