A blast from the past when two Corrie superstars are going at each other hammer and tongs. The Rita and Bet scene as their beautiful friendship ends is a classic moment. The tension generated with its emotion and almost violent climax was fitting for two brilliant characters and was reminiscent of the show at its peak..
Amazing to see Sarah Lancashire as Raquel knowing just what a great career she was going to have. Been binge watching Corrie for weeks while recovering from surgery and loving it. x
The ghosts of Annie Walker, Ena Sharples and Elsie Tanner standing behind the bar shaking their heads as Bett walks to the door and Hilda Ogden closing it behind her.
That whole scene at 2:19:20 was incredibly painful to watch and probably one of the most cringeworthy ever. Steve just came across as a complete moron and creep. Why is he talking in that really breathy voice? And as for the faces he pulls certainly made for some uncomfortable viewing. Watching Bet's hopes crumble away because of him didn't help either.
I always loved Bet, her and Hilda were Coronation Street to me. I think Rita very soon forgot who was the one who came looking for her and found her singing in that hotel, suffering a breakdown and memory loss after Alan Bradley, and brought her home... Some friend Rita turned out to be when Bet needed support, she was about to lose everything she knew, and it was Rita's idea to go into the pub in the first place, she just took the pip cos the cat got let out of the bag early...that really put me right off her character ☹
@@eyezj7412 If you ask me Rita is just as bad as Mike Baldwin. They both look after number one and they are just as vindictive as each other. Mike Baldwin is smart. He never made a move to have a romantic relationship with Rita because Mike Baldwin knows full well that it would never work as they both want to have the upper hand.
@eyezj7412 helping a friend shouldn't be seen as risk. If the pub made money, which it clearly did otherwise, how did it have a manager and 3 or 4 full-time staff on the books, then Rita wasn't losing out. Also, already in her 60s with no kids and she wants to just sit on that sort of money like a dragon on a pile of gold. Never made sense to me
Annie Walker may have been the first landlady of "The Street" but for my money, Bet Lynch was the best. Unlike Annie who always thought she was a cut-above everyone around her, Bet thought of herself on the same level as her patrons and staff. Kind, caring but firm and assertive when needed, she was no pushover. But she also deeply cared about the community where she lived and was there if anyone needed help. It's a pity that no was there for her when she needed it the most.
Taking Bet's name down, from the front-door of the Rovers and replacing it with Vera's name, is like taking down a rose, and replacing it with 3 pounds of tripe.
Yes. I find it very hard to watch. She's ending up with only two expressions, angry/ most extremely upset and very angry/ more, most extremely upset. Surely she doesn't need to stretch her neck muscles to the absolute extreme. I can't watch!! Her voice too...just a toneless gravel pit! Sorry but I really hate it. It doesn't work...for me!
Rita struggling with her emotions and seemingly stamping her foot just before the credits roll. Is she thinking nice one Rita, damn, what the hell have I done, sorry but it had to be said, or wasn’t expecting that outcome ☹️ Great writing from Adele Rose. Love the clapped out chorus girl jibe.
Getting kinda fed up with Deirdre's crying scenes - I fast forward through all her scenes along with a long list of others. Yup. Time to go back to early 70’s. I need my Hilda, Elsie and Mrs Walker fix.
Aww Bet please don’t go…! 😭😭😭 it shouldn’t have ended like this for Julie Goodyear, They should have had Charlie turn up in a white cab and drove off into the sunset 😭😭😭😭
I'm always astonished at the rows that happen in the various businesses. Customers walk in on the most vicious exchanges sometimes and everyone seems to think it's okay.
Rita wasn't really nice to Bet after all those years.....but Bet should've had some savings to offer towards the deal. She should've just kept her mouth shut. Vicky was another matter.....Vicky owed Bet a lot....she should've helped. She did leave turning her back on everyone but she should've saved.
As always it was actually Mavis who opened her big gob not Bet. Does anyone know why the necklace Audrey wore while acting as Mayoress given to her by Fred was never mentioned as coming from the neck of a pig in his shop?
I think the producers or writers really missed a trick when they brought in the Malletts. Ian Mercer had already played Pete Jackson in 1987, an old army pal of Terry Duckworth's, and Terry had ruined the friendship by having an affair with and then running off with Pete's wife. So why not bring Ian Mercer back as Pete, his original role? We know Terry had broken up his marriage, so he could have returned with a new wife - Judy. That would also have given scope to a new or ongoing drama between Pete and Terry when the latter returned to the street and found his old rival living in his parents house. I've always felt the Malletts were a missed opportunity, they should have been the Jacksons, with Judy as his second wife.
It’s nothing new bringing back actors playing different parts.. remember Mark Eden playing Wally Randall in ‘81.. then returning as Alan Bradley in ‘85.. countless examples of that over the years lol
That's kind of a common thing on American soaps. But it's normally temporary and they will announce, "the role of so and so, will be played by (actors name,)"and they announce it the first time the appear daily on the show for a CPL weeks and it becomes their new role some times. Other times its temporary and they reappear on same show or dif soap as a new person sometime in the future.
2:23:00 I wonder how many other Corrie anoraks spotted the fact that one of Jack's pigeons is named after his former 'bit on the side' Dulcie Froggatt?
Slightly ridiculous in reality Bet wanting Rita and Vicky to put up ALL the money to buy her a pub- if she was that interested she should have had made long term plans herself- they were taking on all the risk which is not how the real world works.
The idea of Jack and Vera running the Rovers since Jack worked in the pub for years is like me telling people i'm a dentist because i go to the dentist.
Oh I completely agree. I also agree that it's astonishing that Bet hadn't any savings to contribute after all those years at the Rovers, especially since she spent money so freely. She clearly was not good with money and Rita was right to be concerned. Still, Rita handled it terribly. She got offended by the wrong thing, and somehow Mavis got off Scott free. As for Vicki, she was a heartless, ungrateful bitch.
She’s definitely gone I’m afraid Susannah, and it was a pretty poor exit let’s be honest! Poorly written and certainly wasn’t fitting of a what a tremendous character Bet Lynch was. They did persuade her to return 7 years later but she only lasted 2 weeks before quitting!
@@EveHenleySpreadThat's another poorly managed exit. How sad that both actor and viewers invest so much, only to be cheated of a proper farewell. Given today's consensus that Corrie went rapidly downhill, there's obviously zero regard for what the audience wants. I guess feedback doesn't matter to the writers which is pretty baffling.
Gasp, so, the Queen is dead! Having now watched it again, I'm remembering the feelings I had when originally seeing Bet's departure, upon its first broadcast & they weren't good. What a horrible & frankly poorly thought out exit for La Goodyear, did she agree to this storyline, perhaps she wasn't asked & she just wanted out, does anyone know? No where to go, no money to speak of, few clothes, as mentioned by the cast & no future,, how was that supposed to be a fitting end for one of the shows most memorable characters?! I remember thinking at the time things like, is that it, is she coming back, what happened, is she OK, even the cast is confused,, how is that a good end? But no, there's worse, they even make Bet miss, arguably her best friends wedding, just a day after her departure, when there was NO reason for this, in real life, Bet would have stayed for this event, making Bet look really bad. They also made Bet handle the Rita situation terribly, again making her look bad, but this was in service of this awful missive of a story. Backing Bet into a corner of existential dread, with everyone letting her down, was sad & disappointing for the audience then & now; proving, should proof be needed, that highly paid writers & producers have no more idea what they're doing than your elderly Granny, throwing her knitting at the screen in indignant protest. We'll meet again though dear Bet, we shall meet again.......
I see your point, but Bet loved that place more than anything and would only have left by being forced out or by leaving in a box. It was really the only thing they could have done without killing her off and it was in keeping with her character of not being very successful in life and of being let down by others. I also get the impression that they were keeping the door open for her for a while in hopes of her coming back. Putting the clueless Duckworths in the Rovers seems to back this up.
@@stevenhighams4190 I also see your point, but not true, they could have easily written a love story & that she was so head-over-heels for the man, that her heart ruled over her head & she wanted nothing more than to drive off into the sunset with the man of her dreams. But no, they want to be as miserable as Eastenders & to contrive a plot that was worthless, mean spirited & gave no comfort to the audience. It's a classic stupid writer ploy, 'I don't know what I'm doing & I don't know how to get anyone out of this, I know, let's make everyone miserable!' Cut to nearly 30 years later & writers can barely hold a pen or even spell the word plot, just make it all sad, stick a rainbow flag on it, a wheelchair under it, or get someone who looks like Diane Abbot to ruin everything. Do I sound bitter, you betchya, I used to enjoy TV/ Film, now all that's left of the tatters of entertainment is the past, at least they can't touch that, although they gave it a good try here, but Bet's memory lives on despite the pathetic scribble of these writers - Don't Fall For It. Nurse, my tablets!!
@@Chillmax Well, I don't watch it now and haven't for about five years. I watched it for about twenty years longer than I should have done, but having begun watching it when I was three, purely in the hope that my parents would forget it was my bedtime, it was definitely just a habit by then. This is like 1969 to about 2015, but I grew up watching all the greats, so it's pretty sad to see what it became. I've never liked Eastenders and I think it started the rot, with the corny melodrama and relentless misery and everyone inter-breeding and all living and working in the same vicinity - it's an insult, really. Seeing the likes of Gail always brawling with other women, when it's so out of character. That awful pie in Deirdre's face thing. I remember them as young women and never dreamed they'd end up having nothing to do with each other for many years and then degrading themselves like that when they finally do, I didn't think it was funny. All I could think about was how Gail Potter and Deirdre Hunt/lLangton had come to this. It was sad and disrespectful to two long-term characters and all viewers who could remember the classic 70s era. But to get back to your point, I can't really see Bet being so starry-eyed by that stage of her life. After Alec left, she became harder and noticeably more cynical. I understand why you dislike that storyline, but I think it was the most plausible, really. The only problem I had with it was that she was off-screen for about a month and then came back just to film her departure storyline, which looked like it was shoehorned in. But I think it was good the way she told the likes of Rita and Vicky what she thought of them, thumbed her nose at the brewery by closing the pub and leaving them in the lurch and then left with a smile in the back of the cab. Really, though, it was the beginning of the end, definitely. It became less and less like Coronation Street in very little time.
@@stevenhighams4190 three? i think your parents should have been much more responsible. allowing you to watch this deviant show of promiscuousness and infidelity could only have harmed your innocent fertile mind. you're not divorced are you?
I love the Duckies. Compared to the excruciating Derek and Mavis and Reg and his buffoonery, they are a classic Coronation couple. They need to work and have an excellent love hate chemistry. I look forward to their pub years before Alec returns to screw them. So much hatred directed at them. They are defined as rough and poor. They have had a few windfalls and lost. At the end of of the day, they are human! During the Tyrone years it was hard not to appreciate them taking him in as a son.
Jim McDonald is not a likeable character is he? I grew up without a dad and my mother, in her infinite wisdom, decided I had no right to even know his name. If he was a "Jim McDonald" I reckon she did me a favour; he's the kind of man whose wife and children are scared of his temper. Luckily, I got a sweet-natured, funny stepdad instead.
Does anyone remember or own the Street Talk cassettes that were released to coincide with the 35th anniversary featuring Rita, Reg, Raquel and the Duckworths? They made entertaining listening, part biographical part storyline. Raquel’s was a bit heavy going though, with that gormless voice lol. Rita’s featured her holidaying in Blackpool with the Websters, they wove in a story about Rosie going missing for a short while. Don’t know if it was intended for use in the show proper, think I read a story along those lines was scrapped as a little girl had gone missing maybe abducted around that time. I think there were a couple more released too featuring Hilda and Ken but those ones were only available via mail order, not in the shops. Reg Holdsworth Love Machine and Je m’appelle Raquel t shirts were available too 😂
Rita shd climb up on the counter in the Kabin and Scream at the top of her lungs, "Mavis, u r fired, and Derek, the pair of you will never get ur hands on my news agent's, I would rather see it converted into a hostile for run away knombs"
Remember Julie doing an ad for Shredded Wheat, a Julie/Bet says game with cash prizes in the Daily Mirror and her short lived daytime chat shows following her departure.
To be honest bet did the right choice to shut everyone out after they all backstabbed her After everything she did for them and that’s the thanks she got
Liz ran out into the street after Jim to tell him that brewery had called but then didn't call him until he had already arrived at his destination with Baldwin so you can at least assume a good few minutes later. Didn't seem it was all that much of a priority for her. If it was wouldn't she have ran down the street after him or flagged down a taxi and said "Follow that car!"?
Whoa Rita turned on Bet after SHE offered ! Then MAVIS told all kinds of people AND was like a vulture circling for The Kabin, yet she gets off Scott free and bet takes ALL the blame. Alf stabbed her in the back after all the history they have. Wow they all did her dirty when she needed them most
I liked Gary and Judy. I seem to recall, the fella playing Gary was a mate of Terry and Curly, back in the day, when they were all selling, door to door.
How could the the shop b worth as much as the pub? Is it cause of the corner lot? It def is way smaller, even the apmnt upstairs has less bedrooms, and the pub has a brand new modernist kitchen?
I'm only at like 1:35 I wonder if Mavis fesses up to Rita that it was her that told Bet, Rita is saying yes and the accountant was all for it, and I am really curious why Bet hasn't tried to get a loan for half, even if she asked for it from Vicky. Then they both have $ invested and both taking a financial risk.
Yes. Surely Bet could have used the pub as collateral for a loan, just like the scenario she described to Vicky? And it seems like there was little or no discussion between Rita and Bet about a creative solution to the problem. Likewise Alf "moneybags" Roberts offered no real help, he just put the knife in. So it was all rushed through to its terrible conclusion way too fast.
I think Rita was out of order for letting bet down she knows how hard bet works in that pub and she must of ‘ own that bet would of carried on working hard the pub was her life and vicky what an ungrateful little witch she is gives Steve McDonald anything he wants but the woman that brought her up when she had nobody else needs help she offers to buy her a crappy house what a joke I’m gutted bet left I loved her such a shame 😢
Bet Lynch leaves Weatherfield in a farewell to nobody especially since Rita wouldn't help pay for a share of the Rovers. So Bet just exits the Street without anyone else knowing she's left behind the abandonment of the Rovers Return pub without an owner.
So how much redundancy money is Bet due? cause nobody's mentioned to her that she's worked at the Rovers for 25 odd years so she must've accrued a fair few bob.
Liz and Vicki attending a church ceremony in such short skirts, almost showing their knickers. Shame on them, an surprised that Percy has had nothing to say!
@@EveHenleySpread I knew the Duckeggs got the Rovers, but I didn't know/remember how it happened. Thanks to your hard work, I'm in the frame. Ta very much, to you, Eve!

the man with the black hair an beard is in the rovers return again 4:17:39 im sure he is one of the writers, like alfred hitchcock appears in his own films again
A sad ending for Bet really. Could have given her a good send off even with the heartbreak of losing the Rovers. Why not have her and Stella receive an offer to run a bar in the sun or something like that? Also, why did no one consult Alec when thinking about buying the Rovers? You'd think Vickie would have went to him before Steve. Running my own business I do understand and accept Alfs advice for Rita not to invest though. Bet wasn't putting £1 of her own money into it so that might show how well it was actually doing. It's a pity she went out on a bad note though and a complete disservice to the viewers that her relationship with Rita was never repaired. She will be missed.
Ene my own family all avid viewers(except for me and Dad0 think this show is going downhill. Just saw a ridicuoulous episode wiht murderes and sinkholes. These young exectives writers haven't a clue! LOL
"GOING"? The scourge of the left wing box ticking virtue signallers meant all soaps "going downhill" about 15 years ago. Which is when I gave up on them all.
The writers turned Bet from a strong willed pub manager, then landlady into a "clapped old barmaid" in the space of 10 years. She was pratically a drag queen by the time she left. I think Julie Goodyear deciding to leave was a very good idea.
At this time, apart from the silly voice, I think that Raquel steals the show. When she forgets to adopt that daft voice, she comes across as such a brilliant actress. The scene with Curly when she asks if Reg knows about the attempted rape by Firman, was so convincing and REAL! Beautiful. As for the 'voice' I think I understand why she may use it but I don't think it should be always because sometimes she does have very mature and well thought out opinions. Raquel is actually written, it seems to me, as a much fuller, very decent, character than people think. Love her!
Julie Goodyears presence as Bet was second to none. She was like a soap version of Bette Davis 😍

These episodes are gems 💎 Thanks for sharing. Cheers from 🇨🇦
I always loved Bet, her and Hilda were Coronation Street to me.
Rita later claimed she and Bet were never bosom buddies which I found very strange cos they were the best of pals before!
@@zanducktv2398And Rita LITERALLY told Ken that Bet was her best friend.
It was a bad deal with Rita taking all the risk for almost no reward. Rita made the right decision
Was so sad to see bet go, all the old actresses was the best, Corrine today is just not the same,
Thanks Eve. Looks like another month of drama. ❤️
Thank you for these they are great thank you so much just realised I may have put a spoiler will post it on next month's hope no one saw it
Dreary's tearless crying gets so old.
😱😭🥱
The line at 1:58:28 from Bet Gilroy is one of the most memorable lines from the shows history.

Oh no, won’t be the same without Bet, the best ever soap barmaid/landlady 💔 it’s hard to remember a time when she wasn’t there in the rovers.
Raquel's lavender wedding outfit looks very like the outfit that Mavis wore at her and Dereck's 1st attempt at a wedding!

I miss this era of Coronation Street.
Getting kinda fed up with Deirdre's crying scenes - I fast forward through all her scenes along with a long list of others. Yup. Time to go back to early 70’s. I need my Hilda, Elsie and Mrs Walker fix.
Agreed!
Aww Bet please don’t go…! 😭😭😭 it shouldn’t have ended like this for Julie Goodyear, They should have had Charlie turn up in a white cab and drove off into the sunset 😭😭😭😭
Tanya stole Charlie!
He came back after Tanya dumped him. Bet told him to get lost.
Charlie was a total sh*t. I'd rather have seen Bet ride off into the sunset with Alec. At least she could have kept her eye on him on his "cruises". x
I wish she'd stay, but Charlie was a duplicitous waste of space who ALSO betrayed Bet.

If Jack got his name above the door, it might have included the fact that he was the Pratt that had burned it down, a few years since.
Yeah but ultimately that meant it for refurbed at more in keeping with real life pubs of the time. It looked very dated until 1986
Referring to Anne Walker as ‘some old landlady’ broke all our hearts!

Yes its disgusting.
2:34:46 when the whole mood of the situation takes a sharp turn for the worse and sets the momentum for Bet's dramatic exit.
@@EveHenleySpread the actor who played Norris originally played Mavis' spanish boyfriend who tried marrying her for english residency
@@pandacutlets83 Yes, Carlos lol
That's kind of a common thing on American soaps. But it's normally temporary and they will announce, "the role of so and so, will be played by (actors name,)"and they announce it the first time the appear daily on the show for a CPL weeks and it becomes their new role some times. Other times its temporary and they reappear on same show or dif soap as a new person sometime in the future.
I agree, Judy Jackson sounds nice
2:23:00 I wonder how many other Corrie anoraks spotted the fact that one of Jack's pigeons is named after his former 'bit on the side' Dulcie Froggatt?
Slightly ridiculous in reality
Bet wanting Rita and Vicky to put up ALL the money to buy her a pub- if she was that interested she should have had made long term plans herself- they were taking on all the risk which is not how the real world works.
The idea of Jack and Vera running the Rovers since Jack worked in the pub for years is like me telling people i'm a dentist because i go to the dentist.
... and have an addiction to laughing gas. 😅
Nothing like that at all.
rita pulls out again promises promises promises typical old rita
That big row in the Kabin between Bet and Rita was distressing an not necessary.
The marriage rate in Coronation Street has to be many times the national average.
You're not wrong there it's almost like legislation that you must be married or risk being fined.
Bet had a heart of gold but she was asking a lot of Rita to put 60 thousand in to the Rovers and Bet not put a penny in and just run the pub
Agreed. She was absolutely desperate.
If Bet is gone, this is definitely my last Corrie.
Why did Liz say she had never been upstairs at the Rovers. Jim and her moved in and ran the pub when Bet and Alec were away.
I've just got to that part yeah that's weird also Jim asking who the old lady is like he never saw the picture of Annie Walker before.
I know....a continuity error.
God, Reg's outlook on sexual harassment is so gross!
Hideous. And apparently there's not much to understand about women.

Love her!
