The stretch 'Walkman' - fixed-up & shown-off

  • Sony occasionally repurposed the Walkman cassette mechanisms for devices like this impressive do-it-all travel companion for the international (walk)man of mystery. Suitable for carrying in a briefcase, recording meetings and voice memos, working as an alarm clock, catching up on news from back home and listening to stereo music cassettes on the plane.
UPDATE: I noticed in the closeups that a few parts of the Walkman needed another clean - so after the video was edited I’ve gone back and done this. Specifically there’s a bit of belt residue that you can see on the tape door in some shots. That stuff gets everywhere - you’ll also see it on my fingers in the review of the 40th Anniversary Walkman.
    Belt purchased from fixyouraudio.com

The touchscreen revolution has wiped out a lot of beautiful engineering. It is easy to cram a ton of buttons and widgets onto a phone display, but integrating controls and feedback in a physical product with mechanical buttons while having it make sense and be aesthetically pleasing, now that is an art that is slowly fading into history.

I have 3 SDR radio tuners and use them for listening to FM (WFM), police bands (they're not encrypted in southern Florida) and weather radio on narrow FM (NFM), which is important down here during hurricane season.. But I never was able to get lower frequencies. The room I use it in has 4 LED strips for a total of around 8m under some tables I have here, as well as 3 LED bulbs on the ceiling fan. I turned all this off and started getting reception I never did before. I can't believe this was causing the problem..

The mechanism in this deck looks identical to the one in my WM-R202 (which makes perfect sense considering they're from the same time period). I wonder how many other machines Sony used it in. The mechanism in this is practically identical to all walkmen in the wm-100 and wm-200 range, I have an F100II and F203 (F203 is recording, both have AM and FM radio) and they're basically the exact same mechanism except the main wheel on this model is made of plastic, and it is brass on the models I own. It's like how the WM-10 mechanism was used in all sorts of different walkmen and tapedecks when it was new, being some of the smallest mechs ever made they found their way into a lot of high-quality sony devices at the time of their introduction.

Sony occasionally repurposed the Walkman cassette mechanisms for devices like this impressive do-it-all travel companion for the international (walk)man of mystery. Suitable for carrying in a briefcase, recording meetings and voice memos, working as an alarm clock, catching up on news from back home and listening to cassettes on the plane.

In the auto industry, engine rubbers usually come with a talcum layer. Come to think of it, every rubber band I've had has talcum on it. It's weird the belt suppliers for these things don't. Even my Soviet respirator came with free talcum that I had to spend time cleaning off

Yeah but it was saturated, which lessens abrasion, & this (with a very gentle but specifically angled hand) would put less stress on the pulley from it's weakest point: the rod. Cleaning it with q-tips means holding it in place with a thumb.

Don’t get me wrong - there’s no anger in it. People ask why the comedy outros aren’t on the videos as much and it’s mostly because after 60 episodes I don’t get many new and original ideas for them.
So when recently I found myself answering questions by posting timestamps from the video and getting the reply ‘I hadn’t got to that part yet’. I just thought it was an idea the puppets could exaggerate into a ludicrous situation.
They aren’t reflecting real life - they’re taking a tiny nugget of an idea and blowing it out of all proportion into a daft farce.
