Chemical Conversion of Plastic Waste into Fuel

  • The United Nations estimate that more than 8 million tons of plastics flow into the oceans each year. A new chemical conversion process could transform the world’s polyolefin waste, a form of plastic, into useful products, such as clean fuels and other items.
    “Our strategy is to create a driving force for recycling by converting polyolefin waste into a wide range of valuable products, including polymers, naphtha (a mixture of hydrocarbons), or clean fuels,” said Linda Wang, the Maxine Spencer Nichols Professor in the Davidson School of Chemical Engineering at Purdue University, leads the research team developing this technology, along with research associates Kai Jin, a graduate student, and Wan-Ting (Grace) Chen, a postdoctoral researcher.

    I can say the happiness other this news, this is that some few years i was thinking myself to become a solution for this unstoppable increment of plastic over the world; plz from Peru as a personal task I want to help in any way to share and make it a future in the present energy 🇵🇪 ♥️

    Everything is related to cost, how expensive would this be on a large scale? Any offset waste? something has to be done.

    can we run this on geothermal vent in the ocean at a depth that is 3200 psi and a vent that is 500 degrees and pump plastic and water down and get processed effluent back the water pressure will provide needed pressure and hydrothermal vent will provide needed heat just a thought i had when i seen the idea

    how would i commercialize this i was thinking of a small batch reactor using schedule 160 pipe it will hold the 3200psi and 500 degrees they come in 20 foot lenghts get ends a few valves welded on and put them on a rack and rotate them like a revolver to a high frequency induction heating cell u could in theory make it as many reactors as u wanted or have them as long as u wanted

    Malaysia is shipping our "Recyclable plastic" back to us. Might as well turn it into something we can use.

    I appreciate a form of dealing with the massive amount of unrecyclable plastics, however I'm hearing from some conservation groups that the burning of these plastics to fuel puts added carbon and other chemicals into the air. Can you explain why they would say this?

      This method does not burn the plastic, it breaks it down into oil using a thermic process.

      So what we need this energy, plants need carbon.We need more plant to clean the air and provide oxygen, its a complete cycle.

    Covert the waste into fuel is more expensive than buy oil.

    Interesting, but, does its conversion (using plastic otherwise) pollute the environment differently? As a fuel, does it pollute the air through microparticles; for example...?

      The product could be further refined and used to synthesize plastics again, not necessarily used as fuels though.

    Use your own product to fuel production sell the rest at profit. Instant money glitch if it’s more cost effective than coal.

    The best way to recycle is not to produce the stuff in the first place. Start developing biodegradable plastic (Hemp) and get off of petroleum based plastic.....duh.
