Actually Chip both the light novels and the anime lasted a long time. Orphen's light novels lasted 20 volumes, had a 13 volume spin off and were just licensed to be brought out in English last year. The TV series had 2 full seasons and is having a 25th anniversary new series in 2019, so perfect timing playing this.
So from the IMDB page, Cleo was voiced by Jennifer Hale (Emma Emmerich) Zeus was voiced by Earl Boen (Sergei Gurlokovich) Rani was voiced by Lara Cody (Rosemary) Volcan by Chris Cox (Soldiers in MGS3) And the voice casting was done by.... Kris Zimmerman, which ties it all together (they did the casting for MGS)
I was about to say the same thing about Cleo and Zeus. There are a couple of scenes where Jennifer Hale does the exact same bratty teenager voice in MGS2.
It's funny. These are some awesome VAs, yet part of me wished the anime voice actors reprised those roles for the game back in the day. They were just that fitting for the characters (even if the localization took liberties with the script, as typical of late 90s/early 2000s anime dubs).

This game actually has an extremely weird gimmick where the characters get put into different roles depending on which partner you pick at the beginning of the game, and you need to beat it multiple times to get the ultimate ending where everybody gets to be who they actually are
If a PS2 disc won't read but it has no visible scratches it's more likely that the lens of your PS2 has become unfocused (this happens inevitably). It's not too complicated to repair by following a guide, or you can do things like weighing the console down or turning it on its side as a stopgap measure.
Had this on PS2 launch, and every time I think about it, all I hear is "A BITE... Of LIGHT--A BITE... Of L--A BITE..." And getting interrupted non-stop without accomplishing anything.

The game's dub is bad, it looks bland, yet it gives off such a strong energy of a game the kind of teenager I idolized as a kid would play. Up in their attic, the window open during a summer day, playing games like this and watching anime bootleg dvds in the mid 2000's. I think the ambient SFX and the general music direction palys a part in that.

OH MY SORCERER YOU JUST GOT PRANKED! This was the first PS2 game I ever played, thanks to my friend Joel. This thing is a mess. EDIT: A bit of backstory - Sorcerous Stabber Orphen was a fairly successful light novel, then anime, then manga from the late 90s that ADV Films wanted to bring over to America. So, they hired out to a few companies to make a tie-in game separate from the main story. This is what you're playing now, released in 2000, as one of the newer titles for the fledgling PS2 (hopefully to give it a boost in visuals/sales.) The title in japanese is Kadokawa Shoten, who started off in magazine publishing (Newtype, and the various 'Ace' magazines) and Manga (.hack, Haruhi Suzumiya, Tenchi Muyo) before expanding to video games, most notably with Lunar, Steins:Gate, and this. The actual anime first hit stateside a year later, and sorta flopped due to the game selling very, very poorly. It actually got a second animated series, and a manga, which did respectably but never garnered much attention outside the usual circles. So, what you are playing was one of the first failed attempts to make a 'multi-media product', which wouldn't really take off until .hack came onto the scene a few years later.
I like the general idea of the mechanics that I think this game was trying to have, but it gets so incomprehensible so quickly. Everything that doesn't have to do with actually playing it seems delightfully dumb, though.

The anime ended around 1999/2000 so yeah it kinda makes sense they kinda assume you the player already seen the anime. It's pretty much like if the Fullmetal Alchemist game was released after the anime but the anime was only on vhs.

Also all the voices are different in the anime like Majik/Magnus is voiced Spike Spencer AKA Shinji Ikari in the anime.
