Man, I was in college back in 1998. What a great time to be alive. I know it's cliche, but it really only seems like it was yesterday. I remember going to the cinema, with one of my closest friends, to see "Saving Private Ryan". Neither of us were expecting such a heavily emotional film. There were World War ll veterans in the audience, who were sobbing uncontrollably. I remember after the movie ended, the two of us went outside, and quietly stood there for about 20 minutes, smoking a cigarette, trying to process what we just watched. It was crazy. Lol!

At the end, previewing for the 1999 episode the narration alludes to The Matrix, and shows a tiny clip from Fight Club. Both were released in 1999, as were The Green Mile and The Sixth Sense.
American Beauty won the top categories (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Original Screenplay and Best Photography) in 2000, the year in all these films were eligible for nomination.
The Matrix was only nominated for technical awards (Best Film Editing, Best Sound, Best Sound Effects Editing, Best Visual Effects), though it won them and Fight Club was only nominated for sound effects editing, losing out to The Matrix.
American Beauty was placed on lists of worst Best Picture winners long before Kevin Spacey's comeuppance happened. All of those other films with the possible exception of The Sixth Sense were either more consequential, better , or both than American Beauty
