when the British decided to leave the Middle East after WWII, it seemed like this might finally be the moment when the Arabs would get their long-promised land. But the Jewish Israelis, bolstered by tens of thousands of Jews fleeing postwar Europe, overwhelmed the Arabs during the 1948 War of Independence which established Israel as an independent state. The “Right to return”, which grants any Jewish person, anywhere in the world, the right to immigrate to Israel and automatically become a citizen, led to waves of Jews, in particular from America, to flood into Israel and give it the characteristics of an ethnostate. Jews were given special privileges that were not extended to Arab Muslims and Christians, leading to them feeling like second class citizens in a nation that should have been theirs by right of having paid for it with their own blood.
So when people say Israel was built on stolen land, they have a strong case. The Brits promised it to the Arabs to goad them into being useful pawns in WWI, reneged on the deal when valuable resources were found there, populated it with colonizers, a large portion of which happened to be Jewish, and then when the Arabs tried to take it back, funded the Israelis in large part out of a collective sense of guilt for the Holocaust.
