How good was Romário actually? #GOAT
New episode of a documentary series where I plan to present all the greatest players of all time and then give them a score so a ranking of the best players can be created. In this episode we take on Romário who played for Flamengo, Vasco Da Gama, PSV and Barcelona for most of his career, not only one of the greatest strikers of all time but one of the greatest players of all time. See how Romário ranks and just how good he actually was.

on his defense: yes, he was an enthusiast of the night life and gatherings, but no, he didn't use to drink like one would imagine. All football legends that played with him talk about how he'd go out and party, but not get fucked up, probably the reason he could play in high level for so long, top scorer of the Brazilian serie A at 40! don't forget that romario had one of the best coaches a football player could ever wish for!
@9:54 the best of the best: the legendary johan cruyff together with romario.
johan cruyff always had a good eye for true football talent.
cruyff's favorite football player was pele and he recognized much from pele in romario.
romario was a real football artist in the tradition of pele, cruyff, zico & maradonna.
the only reason we don't hear his name too often is because he was a pain in the ass to deal with.
didn't show up at training sessions, but stayed in bed etc.
he basically just did whatever he felt like and was impossible to work with.
his football skills were impeccable though.
especially the psv & barca years.
romario was the reason that ronaldo nazario fenomena went the same route, from psv to barca.

10, actually. His sprint take-off is the best ever in the history of the game. It's the reason he had to walk around so much in matches; he blew so much energy for 3 second periods. Trust somebody who spent hours watching starts from guys like Micheal and Ben Johnson and managed to get a walk-on track offer in college. He may not have had the Johnsons' muscle mass, but his technique was the same.

Most Europeans tend to diminish South American and Brazilian football and are completely ignorant about it, especially when it comes to how spectacular it was in the last century and how good it still is considering we are a poor country and have 1.200 players out abroad, the equivalent of 109 teams, that is more than half of the 164 teams distributed in all 4 Brazilian national divisions today.
Brazil is a continental country, as big as Oceania and a little smaller than Europe and it's a non stop machine producing football players. São Paulo state is bigger than United Kingdom. Minas Gerais state is bigger than Spain and Italy. Rio da Janeiro state is bigger than Denmark. While most european countries have only two, three or four clubs considered big, Brazil has 12 and 16 different national champions in six decades of national championship.
If Brazil was divided as Yugoslavia or USSR were, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and Rio Grande do Sul could form great national teams, capable of fighting for the World Cup title. And Bahia, Paraná, and Pernambuco could form decent ones also.
Before Europe (followed by Middle East, Japan, USA and China) started to take every minimally successful Brazilian player, Brazilian regional championships were as good as European national championships and were considered more important than both Brazilian national championship and Libertadores da América, the South American championship. Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo leagues were as good as the greatest leagues of Europe. Minas Gerais and Rio Grande do Sul leagues were as good as the second level leagues of Europe and Bahia, Pernambuco and Paraná leagues were better than most smaller European leagues. Mediocre teams that were never reginal champions used to tour in Europe and defeat giants like Real Madrid, and Benfica In the 80's and 90's, when the bigger leagues of Europe were already importing players, the difference was still not that big. The superiority of Europe would be stablished in the 2000's.
If we analyse Rio de Janeiro state championship in 1986-1988, when Romário started playing, we can find many other great players of Brazilian National team (and one from Spain and another from Paraguay) as Zico (1978, 1982, 1986 WCs), Roberto Dinamite (1978, 1982 WCs), Bebeto (1990, 1994, 1998 WCs), Dunga (1990, 1994, 1998 WC), Branco (1986, 1990, 1994 WCs), Dirceu (1974, 1978, 1982 WCs), Jorginho (1990, 1994 WCs), Mazinho (1990, 1994 WCs), Tita (1990 WC), Leonardo (1994, 1998 WCs), Mauro Galvão (1986, 1990 WC), Renato Gaúcho (1990 WC), Bismarck (1990 WC), Alemão (1986, 1990 WC), Gonçalves (1998 WC), Leandro (1982 WC), Acácio (1990 WC), Zé Carlos (1990 WC), Josimar (1986 WC), Paulo Victor (1986 WC), Andrade (1988 Olympics, 1983 Copa America), Geovani (1988 Olympics, 1989 Copa America), Paulo Roberto (1983 Copa America), Donizete (1998 Gold Cup), Wilson Gottardo (1991 Copa America), Célio Silva (1997 Copa America), Marinho (1976 Olympics), Lira (1991 Copa America, Donato (1996 Euro - Spain), Romerito (1986 WC - Paraguay). And there were others with one or two caps or that didn't play for the national team, but could, as Assis, Washington, Nunes (6 caps/2 goals - almost selected to 1982 WC), Rogerio Lourenço (3 caps, U20 1989 WC), William (U20 1987 WC), Paulinho Criciúma, Arturzinho (1 cap/1 goal), Mauricinho (U20 1983 WC), Alcindo (U20 1987 WC), Marco Aurélio (Sporting-POR, Palermo-ITA), Adílio (1 cap), Carlos Alberto Santos and others.

Pfft it wouldn't be countered today and shouldn't be. Friendlies are friendlies. Your backyard is your backyard. If that was the case all players would have hundreds of goals more imagine Ronaldo or Messi. So your arguement makes no sense as contradicts rightful FIFA rules.
Technology and verification was not like today. Pele led by example and Romario followed suit. He already said his mission was match Pele's record so of course by hook or by crook he was gonna count every goal he scored including in his dreams.
That doesn't take anything away from his greatness. He's one of the greatest to ever kick a ball. It's not about how many he scored but how he scored them.
At least he isn't desperate insecure and audacious enough to announce more unofficial added goals into an already unofficial record even after retirement and turn himself into a meme lol.

3 Italians missed, Baresi, Massaro and Baggio. Massaro made the decisive miss, Italy was already on the ropes when Baggio stepped up. The question is would Italy still have had a chance to win if Baggio scored. Brazil's 5th penalty taker was Bebeto, experienced... he most likely would have ended it to Brazil anyway. Italy should have put Dino Baggio and Giuseppe Signori to the penaltys than injuried Baresi and Baggio. To make matters even worse Sacchi benched Signori from the whole final game 🤦‍♂️. Strange coach who blew it up for Italy in 94.

Neymar should not be names in the smae breath as Ronaldo, Romario, Rivaldo, Kaka. Neymar is nowhere near that level.

If "sublime" means the best ever first-fifth power strides to either side? His running take-off puts even prime Messi's to shame. Trust me, his power from the take-off was college-level or better track and field quality.

Agree 100%. Maybe the forgotten Brazilian but probably my favorite all around striker. A Matador in the box.

Romario was still 4th placed in the FIFA player of the year award in 1995 despite the fact he was playing in Brazil. He had a good shot of winning it (and possibly the Ballon D’or) had he stayed in Barcelona. Reminder that the Ballon D’Or only started accepting entries for players from non european clubs in 2007.
