i love everything about this scene, the lighting, sound, score, the way it was filmed the actor's performances... I a perfect scene. What a way to leave the film business, great job Mr. Newman.
Quite simply one of the most beautiful scenes ever filmed. Everything from the rain to Thomas Newman's wonderful score, right down to the minimalistic but oh-so effective acting by Hanks and Newman. It's almost like a moving painting. A masterpiece. RIP Paul Newman
One of the most underrated films ever with two of the greatest actors who have ever starred on a screen. This scene is absolutely perfect in terms of the music the symbolism, those 4 words John Rooney (Paul Newman) utters, everything about this scene and this film is excellent.
So many have said this is the best scene ever......NOPE. The car wash in Cool Hand Luke was the most memorable scene in all of film making. Thank you Joy Harmon.
This was simply Magic. There are no two ways about it. The film itself is not the best ever made - but this scene - the music - Paul's acting and Tom's face - classic! A magical moment captured forever!
Genuinely one of the best made scenes in any film. It portrays such hatred and malice, and a fierce battle without one gun sound or lame sound effects. Instead there's just that awesome emotional music. FANTASTIC!
I think the minimalism of the scene is the whole point. Alongside the lighting, the silence, the music & the lack of flair in the combat, the dialogue fit perfectly.
Having fired a friend's M1A1, I can assure you that the tendency for the gun to climb off target is remarkable; a front pistol-grip like on Sullivan's is absolutely necessary for any type of fire control, and it is still very innaccurate over 50 yards. In fact, by examining this film clip at 0:05 and 0:09,the distance seems to be about 50-65 yards. An excellent marksman, who is "one with the gun", might be able to pull this off. GotMilkFilms is right about the sound, also: Excellent. Peace:-)
I've ranked this the best scene ever in cinema. Would anyone else care to agree? Amazing cinematography with beautiful colors, and perfect use of sound along with that great musical score that haunts me to this day. And I would say that the line, "I'm glad it's you.", is one of the best lines ever.
This scene has to be one of the best I've seen in my entire life. Everything is just perfect, and Hanks looks just like the anti-hero he is suppose to be.
This scene puts all other gangster films to shame. It's one of the most haunting, hypnotic and truly amazing pieces of film I've ever seen (just like the rest of the movie). I never get tired of watching it. Whoever posted this is a genius.
The cinematography in this film is just too good for words. Rarely does photography in a film provide such a powerful sense of time and place as this film. I can imagine every cinematographer watching this film and being utterly intimidated.
Didn't realise that Sam Mendes directed this film. That probably goes some way to explaining how this film is one of my all time favourites! A true masterpiece!
Road to Perdition is the most beautiful film I have ever seen. The film's pure beauty captures me.....the music...colors...sounds.....incredible! How this movie was not nominated for Best Picture I don't know.....Man I love this movie......This is also the best scene of the film.
im not sure if its the greatest, i aint seen enough movies to make that judgement but this scene definitly my top 5 of all time that ive seen. good choice
I respect the title of the music - Ghosts. The music itself is very against type, and spot-on serious. The folks who made this film know something about vengeance: what it can do, and what it can't.
Yes, the music is a big part of it. But I think more importantly is the sound. It's complete silence except for the music until it cuts away to Newman's final line. Road to Perdition is really a unique film. It's not a real abrasive film. Not overly violent or graphic; not real loud; not too edgy. The film speaks for itself.
Paul Newman's only son Scott died as a young adult, after struggling with addiction. I have to think that played some role in Newman's performance here, which was just amazing.
This shootout has brilliant aesthetics to it: the rain, the silence. Throw in a close-up shot of shell casings falling in slow motion alongside the raindrops and this could possibly be the inspiration for one amazing music video.
Instead of saying "I'm glad it was you," which is sad, it's standard -- Newman should have said "I love the sound of rain at night..(looking around & then adding) "...it makes me feel real good...." & smiled that Newman smile with a degree of disappointment -- which he could do effectively. He would've had satisfaction. Hanks would've been stunned. Great movie. The best scene of the film, should have had a line that was more memorable than the standard "I'm glad it was you," line.
To understand why Tom Hanks is possibly the greatest ever actor, you only need to see this film and Forest Gump, because between the two parts he portrays so much variation of emotion and character that you realise he can do anything with such totality.
Absolutely an awesome scene. No doubt. I agree. It's just that I'm from that generation where certain actors usually delivered a "classic" line in a film. Newman was certainly one of these. Years before this and I can't list them all here Newman delivered many memorable lines in his masterful style in several films. I was just "suggesting" that a better, more memorable line for a scene as great as this one in Road To Peridition could have been conceived. Could have been. That's all.
that scene is breathtaking, its so intense.... i think it would be rand if hanks teabagged newman halo style and ran off seriously though, great great film
LOL I know. Today I received Road to Perdition and Forrest Gump on Blu Ray for Christmas. I watched them both. I knew Tom Hanks was the greatest actor ever. But the difference between Mike Sullivan and Forrest Gump is just terrifying
Amazing, I was born in spain i love my country and europe for a lot of things, but i recognize this scene you can only watch in a usa film. My respect for Sir Paul Newman
The scene is actually slowed down to around .75x. You can tell by how graceful they all fall. In real time, he probably killed them all within 5 seconds. Not unrealistic at all.
Two wrongs don't make a right. Or should I say, the end does not justify the means. Just because they looked out for each other, doesn't make them good people, or what they did was right. They were criminals. Tom's best performance since Forrest Gump.
yupp ths my favorite too, god damn! oh well i liked when he walked slowly, carry a big gun and not speak at all then bang bang bang.. 6 weeks on the road EXCELLENT !
i love everything about this scene, the lighting, sound, score, the way it was filmed the actor's performances... I a perfect scene.

RIP Paul Newman
And RIP Conrad Hall too, the painter in light
totally agree 1000%
One of the most underrated comments is the most underrated movie of all times. Simply underrated.
The scene is like ..kill them all but .. But gets nostalgic when Rooney says ..I m glad its you...truly a masterpiece...

Perfect Score!
Not sure I would put Tom Hanks in the same league as Paul Newman.
So many have said this is the best scene ever......NOPE.
The car wash in Cool Hand Luke was the most memorable scene in all of film making. Thank you Joy Harmon.
One of the most beautifully shot movies in cinematic history! And the soundtrack is soul stirring.
One of the best scenes in the movie, which is hard to judge because there are so many beautiful ones. I'm glad this clip is on this site. :D

Weren't later models fitted with a special muzzle to compensate for the rise to the left?
A beautifully shot scene...a bit too beautiful if anything. Love that they are all holding their precious umbrellas :)
One of the most beautifully filmed scenes in film history, IMO.
this movie is so underrated it makes me not sleep at night, this should be as famous as the godfather
I've ranked this the best scene ever in cinema. Would anyone else care to agree?

My favourite scene ever. Just beautiful!

agreed.....haunting, poignant and amazingly well shot....
This scene puts all other gangster films to shame. It's one of the most haunting, hypnotic and truly amazing pieces of film I've ever seen (just like the rest of the movie). I never get tired of watching it. Whoever posted this is a genius.
very underrated movie, it was in my eyes a classic, a masterpeace.
The cinematography in this film is just too good for words. Rarely does photography in a film provide such a powerful sense of time and place as this film. I can imagine every cinematographer watching this film and being utterly intimidated.

"This is the life we chose, the life we lead, and there is only one guarantee: none of us will see heaven"
the greatest movie of all time - i always weep when i see this film and listen to the soundtrack at night
im not sure if its the greatest, i aint seen enough movies to make that judgement but this scene definitly my top 5 of all time that ive seen. good choice
the cinematography in this film is the best ive ever seen imo
VERY underrated film. Excellence all around
amazing editing
best scene in the movie.
calm chaos.
Finish it off with some sad piano. and you have the best scene ever created.
Thank you Sam Mendez
I respect the title of the music - Ghosts.
The music itself is very against type, and spot-on serious.
The folks who made this film know something about vengeance: what it can do, and what it can't.
Started to pour down as soon as I watched this... Great movie... Loved the film photography style greatly
This film should be released again in theaters for people to enjoy.
what a movie, one of the finest ever made if not thee finest ! what great actors, legendary
This scene is very sad :(
I love this film
RIP Paul Newman

this movie was really good. this scene is the most artistically beautiful scene i've ever seen in a movie. simply outstanding
Paul Newman's only son Scott died as a young adult, after struggling with addiction. I have to think that played some role in Newman's performance here, which was just amazing.
thankyou, someone who notices the difference
Great cinematography!, combines eerie music with silent action.
Such a great movie, one of my favourites and the last one the late great Paul Newman made.
Thomas Newman is definately one hell of a composer. The music is just entrancing.
Great scene as well.
thomas newman writes amazing scores to all the films i've watched with his music in them.
definitely one of the best movies of all time. cinematographer conrad l hall is a genius
Those are two amazing performances of course, but I would also put his work in Cast Away up there too. Such an amazing performance in that movie!
I can't hold it in, I now break down every time I see this scene.
Thomas Newman's score is a large part of this scene's success.
That and a truly disciplined fashion sense.
the brollies did actually match those coats.
This shootout has brilliant aesthetics to it: the rain, the silence. Throw in a close-up shot of shell casings falling in slow motion alongside the raindrops and this could possibly be the inspiration for one amazing music video.
The use of sound was amazing there using Thomas Newman's score dubbed over the sound of the Tommy gun was a brilliant choice amazed :)
Still I think Saving Private Ryan was his best ever, count those 2 off yours also and Cast Away and you can easily say he's the BEST ever!
my favourite movie......RIP Paul Newman....will miss u
THE best scene in the entire movie.
Instead of saying "I'm glad it was you," which is sad, it's standard -- Newman should have said "I love the sound of rain at night..(looking around & then adding) "...it makes me feel real good...." & smiled that Newman smile with a degree of disappointment -- which he could do effectively. i always get frissons from this , it's an amazing piece
To understand why Tom Hanks is possibly the greatest ever actor, you only need to see this film and Forest Gump, because between the two parts he portrays so much variation of emotion and character that you realise he can do anything with such totality.
Had those beautiful blue eyes, and is true is a shattering scene !
This is acting at its best... no words just Newman's face
Absolutely an awesome scene. No doubt. I agree. It's just that I'm from that generation where certain actors usually delivered a "classic" line in a film. Newman was certainly one of these. Years before this and I can't list them all here Newman delivered many memorable lines in his masterful style in several films. This scene is a masterpiece
I think Paul Newman suspected something when he began to see the bored umbrellas
Philadelphia his first Oscar.
It is a fantastic film. I loved American Beauty too. His films are...well, beatuiful!
that scene is breathtaking, its so intense....
i think it would be rand if hanks teabagged newman halo style and ran off
seriously though, great great film
At 1:47, I slightly jump everytime Tom Hanks does that. The tommy gun is no joke, would hate to stir at the barrell of one of those bad boys.
The song is: Thomas Newman - Ghosts
Funny, I didn't care for The Green Mile, but he still shows up in MY favorites too: Forest Gump, Apollo 13, Saving Private Ryan.
i absolutely love the costume departments job in this movie
Green Mile, Finding Nemo, Shawshank Redemption, Road to Perdition, Adjustment bureau etc. Thomas Newman is the man.
That's so cool! This is one of my favorite scenes in the last 10 years. Did you get to meet the late, great Conrad L. Hall?
In my top -5- all favorite films, and this shootout scene, a classic.
I love this film. None of my friends have seen it. I recommend it but to date none have. Their lose
LOL I know. Today I received Road to Perdition and Forrest Gump on Blu Ray for Christmas. I watched them both. I knew Tom Hanks was the greatest actor ever. But the difference between Mike Sullivan and Forrest Gump is just terrifying
Please post more clips from this film!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Amazing, I was born in spain i love my country and europe for a lot of things, but i recognize this scene you can only watch in a usa film. My respect for Sir Paul Newman

one of my favorite movies
love this movie
@Biefstukmusic YES YES YES! haha, I want to know the original track now!?
I read it as he didn't want him to suffer or realize any pain, so he just laid into him and made sure he would be dead before he hit the ground.
this movie completely caught me off gaurd when I saw it for the first time....this movie IS the shit!
Artfully done
Well, I haven't seen enough films yet either I suppose. But from what I've seen I think it's the best.
Hes great in comedy too though. You ever seen the money pit ?, the bath tub scene in that film made my cry with laughter.
The music haunts the end score from American Beauty, another Sam Mendes film.
The emotional music sample was used in Reflekt Ft Deline Bass - Need to feel loved.
awesome track, check it out.
this must be the most beautiful scene ever
The Green Mile, Road To Perdition, Forest Gump. Why is it that my three favourite films all star Tom Hanks.........
i saw it last night again after many years...the scene is the whole movie...or to rephrase that...the whole movie is in that scene
@Guigley I agree. The film score really seems to bring it out
Masterpiece.
Two wrongs don't make a right. Or should I say, the end does not justify the means.
Just because they looked out for each other, doesn't make them good people, or what they did was right. They were criminals.
Tom's best performance since Forrest Gump.
@HitchcockFan16 oh ok. I completely agree with you though, the music does flow perfectly with the scene.
beautiful scene one of the best from gangster movies
....If only Agent 47 went into the animus...He'd be Tom Hanks' character
yupp ths my favorite too, god damn! oh well i liked when he walked slowly, carry a big gun and not speak at all then bang bang bang.. 6 weeks on the road EXCELLENT !
brilliant had to get on bluray
Great movie, but I find it so depressing.
@DudeHuge
Serious... do you know how difficult it is to accessorize with umbrellas?
@RyanBleeker It's "Ghosts."
