I do have about 20 + Roses in big Containers, since I rent, I’d take my Roses wherever I move to, and they are doing FABULOUS. I have: Larger Than Life Roses, Simplicity Volet, Don Juan, Mr. Lincoln, Lagerfeld, JFKennedy, Life Of The Party, Givenchy, Queen Elizabeth, Savannah, Kiss Me Kate, Earth Angel and 3 others I don’t remember now. I live in zone 8
Amazing that I'm still learning so many things I thought I knew it all . Lol 😂 . I have a tendency to keep plants I love most in pots cause I think I will lose them once in the ground . Crazy yes. You just allowed me to leave them in pots but remove the bottom . Helps my anxiety over moving and losing them . 😂
Just broke out my container roses from the back of the garage. They are all budding out: 3 Perle D'or, 3 Bliss Parfuma, an At Last and an Enfant de France. Batting 100%. I watered them all just a bit at the beginning of each month. And all of my roses in the ground made it. This is the first time for me that every single rose came through. Whoo hoo!
The best rose I have ever grown = Margaret Merrill. Large white flowers, full of petals, amazing fragrance, disease resistant, repeat flowering. Long flowering period. Joy!
The colours of my roses after the feed of liquid tomato feed is the most brightest & prominent you’ve ever seen & the vigor & health on them is outstanding
Excellent, now I need at least half of them! Haha. I do have Lady Emma Hamilton in a pot, and it works ver well for me: so beautiful and an addictive fragrance! Harlow Carr works well in a pot too
Jason, so happy spring is just around the corner and we can all enjoy outdoor roses again!! Thank you for sharing. Your roses are always unique and so lovely.
Yes to Little White Pet. Also Perle d'or, Bliss Parfuma, Pillow Fight and Earth Angel. I have grown these in containers for years. I am in a cold zone so I roll them to the back of my garage, cover them with quilts from a thrift store and give them a few ounces of water once a month.
I grew a floribunda called "Lagerfeld" in a container when I lived in Portland and it did really well. As I recall, it had a compact growth habit with silvery lavender petals and a mild fragrance.
Hey Jason, thanks for all you do in helping us with our Rose's , I hate to admit this but I have over 30 in containers and looking to add more, but my favorite so far are Mr. Lincoln, double delight and fragrant cloud. It's a hobby that I hope to keep growing, thanks again for your time, helping me with my issues and problems keep the videos coming,. And would love to share some pictures of my Rose's with you and your channel. Thanks again Kevin W.

I have a Belinda’s Dream in a 21” pot that I got last yr. I’m in Tx, zone 8a, and she over wintered in our garage when we had cold snaps. She’s done really well, and I just pruned her along with my other roses and applied horticultural oil to all. I have two more 21” pots that I’m planning on putting more rose standards in very soon so this video was extremely helpful! 🥰🌹
Thank you for another fabulous video! I have several DA roses in pots, because I am in zone 4a; I am lucky enough to have an above-ground root cellar where I put them for the winter. In my pots I have Abraham Darby, Heritage, St Swithun, Tess of the D'Urbevilles, Othello, Bathsheba, Wollerton Old Hall (big pot). They are all in 21 inch pots (except the Old Hall, who is in a half barrel) and they do really well! The real reason I am commenting though is that I was lucky enough to pick up a Jalbert Dragon Heart (or Dragon Blood - I can never remember, since I lost the label and it isn't anywhere on the internet, not even Help Me Find) The Dragon Heart is an outstanding container rose: very floriferous, never stops blooming, gorgeous flowers and foliage. I think that as long as you are prepared to go above and beyond tending container roses, it’s possible to grow lovely blooms. I check my pots every single day and they are pampered. I’m retired though, so I have the time.

Hello Jason! One quick question, does depth of a pot matter when planting a rose. I remember you saying a minimum of 15” diameter or fifteen gallon pot but no mention about how tall it should be. Sorry if it’s just a dumb question.☺️😳☺️
Thank you Jason. I planted a Julia Child in a container on my deck in my zone 6a , it died 😢 I think I should have found a rose that was two zones colder than my zone since it’s impossible to move. I sure would have loved to be able to grow her on my deck. Lessened learned. ❄️💚🙃
Thanks Jason! I’ve been looking for a couple of roses that need to stay less than 3feet tall so they don’t block the view out of my window. It’s so hard to find the height on most websites! Now to look for Pillow Fight and Marcie Utrillo. I’d never realised Julia Child was shorter.
Thanks Kathy - depending on climate and growing conditions, of course - I know folks in California must chuckle a little when they see the listed sizes!
I have several DA climbers in containers to see how they do. Kind of like the one you have along the wooden fence line at your place. We’ll see see soon, just got them in them mail 3 days ago!
I had to laugh when I saw the topic. I literally just put all of my potted roses in the ground.😂🤣 Seeing how my property is basically all lava rock, I had to test dig all of the low lying areas to see if there was deep enough soil to accommodate the roses, I now have 9. They are much happier up here in the higher elevation and cooler temperatures. They actually went through a short dormancy and are now starting to bud out in leaves. I added a lavender Angel Face to the mix for color and the interesting serrated pedal edges. The soil I do have isn't very deep, so it will probably be more like growing in pots still. At least the roots can spread out and I can always add soil and mound it up if needed. The temperature sensitivity and watering needs are probably the most important to be mindful of because the entire growing area is the pot. Because I have so much wind up here it is necessary to have a surface covering around all my plants or they will dry out in a couple of hours (even 35 gallon pots). For people who live in areas that don't have a lot of wind or perhaps get more rain and moisture, they might want to add additional aggregate to allow the additional moisture to drain more quickly. Growing in pots requires a bit more attention to the needs of your plants on more frequent basis because the growing space is restricted to the size of the pot. Have a great Sunday Jason.🤙
Thanks. 'Angel Face' is wonderful for fragrance (at least my nose, in my own garden). I can imagine that roses will do wonderfully with the higher altitudes - I'm told that the farms in higher regions of Columbia are some of the most productive in the world for cut roses.
When i was a school girl.. i used to pass by a front garden with grandpa Dixon rose .. giant leaved with open hands size gigantic yellow flower.. i used to be bowled over by the bigness of it in 70’s.. i realised then at 12 that i seem to have a craze for roses .. i had that one at my London house.. then saw it last yr. selling at wyewale nursery.. but i bought roushet de something.. the dark pink fragrance one
Desdemona from david austin blooms prolifically in clusters in my 20x20 pot, amazing rose. Roald Dahl is also Excellent in a pot and blooms a lot, also havnt had any black spot or problems at all with roald in 2 years, just a bullet proof rose over all.
Jason I love your videos! This is so helpful as shade is taking over my garden and I was planning containers for the one sunny area in my yard. Thank you.
Jubileee Celebration is so gorgeous. I have a pot, she is doing well in our suddenly blistering hot weather, so is Desdemona. Ingenous Mr Fairchild however can't cope, she is in shade and just starting to grow new buds and leaves. A Japanese hybrid rose, Gabriel, sweet fragrance, palest purple fade to white and last over a week also soldiers the barely berable temperature well. Calcutta 300, lovely pink with white stripe, outstanding fragrance growing well in pot, unlike its near lookalike, Vick's Caprice, but at least now Vick's buds are growing instead of just burnt to crisp. My greatest headache is Jeri Jennings. She is doing well in pot but when i water it the leaves turn yellow and drop off, every single time. At first i had her in full sun. Now she is in the shade. She seemed unfazed by the high temperature but because i only water the roses when the soil dry, i don't want to risk it wilted while i am not paying attention, so into the shade it goes. Even when the leaves droop, the soil dry, 24 hours after i water it, some leaves turn yellow. The canes remain green and healthy, no rot or dieback. Weird
Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm still waiting for Jeri Jennings to thrive in my own garden, and I figured it was my cool heavy soil holding it back.
All of my roses are currently in pots. My two DA are ancient Mariner and Roald Dahl. RD is very good for pots but since all my pots are big 20-30 gallons really any rose can do ok in them for sometime
I have all 9 of my David Austin roses in large containers..& i’ll put the damask & moss roses of all heights & widths in tall pots too.. DA roses are doing very well in pots
Hi Jason, another great video. Because I have a house which comes with my job and I move on average every 5 years I have a number of roses in pots, I do have a few in the garden too ( still wondering whether to take these when I move in a few months) I do try and make sure I feel and give extra care to the roses in containers, but I don't feel they do as well as the ones in the garden. A couple of years ago I put 2 rose plants of the same verierty in the same container, thinking that I would get a fantastic display, but neither plant has done very well so I think that now (after watching your video) I will move them both into new separate pots. I have been looking for the best coffee/apricot rose, do you have any suggestions please ?? 🤔 How is the Chapel building coming along?
@Pauline Crispin Considering that you move fairly often, re-potting with fresh soil and thinning the roots of your roses is probably going to give them the best environment to grow in. Also, depending on how large th base of your roses are, you may need to divide them, but that would be an area to discuss with Jason to hear his thoughts on the varieties of roses you have. I re-pot my plants every three years and keep them pruned fairly small so they have a bit more soil than size, it keeps them much healthier all around and it the usually require less attention overall. 🤙
Thanks Pauline. I do like Coffee Bean - and it's a good size for containers. I wonder if you can find Indian Summer - great fragrance. The chapel is all done now, and I'll probably be giving a close-up view on the channel within the next couple of weeks.
Many thanks for the rise suggestions I will lokfor them. I have separated the 2 roses I had in one pot. There were signs of vine weevil. So another reason why they were not doing well. 🙄
Not really a recommendation but I picked up a Petite Knock Out on clearance last fall that I've got in a container. It was pretty ratty looking and isn't in a very pleasing shape, but it's already started growing like crazy with buds forming.
I'm learning so much from your videos. Love the tips and recommendations as well. I don't grow roses, everything I tried to grow dies. Except for cactus lol. Keep up the great work!♥️
Thanks for your expertise and common sense approach. I have a question: when you mention a gardening zone for a rose, is the number used meant to represent the lowest area tolerated? I live in zone 9b, so if a rose is considered Zone 5, it is just fine here. Yes?
I love your channel thank you for sharing so many awesome tips !! I do have a question where can you purchase some of the container roses you mentioned ?
I have binge watched this channel. I would be interested to know if you have any Himalayan wild roses. I am from India and I have sometimes spotted a few rose like plants on hikes. They had no flowers and only thorns. Big thorns, small thorns, tiny hair like thorns, stem full of thorns and thorns even on the back of the leaves. Have always wondered if a wild rose could grow in shade of Deodar trees at 2500 meters above sea level. ?
Hi Jasoon, I. hate to admit that I removed my formerly beautiful New Dawn climber last summer because it was not blooming at all. My plan is to plant a new New Dawn in the same spot this spring, but I think I would have benefitted from your advise to get the flowers back on the original well established plant!
Those are some beautiful roses! I’m getting itchy to go browse the local garden shop 😅. I’m planning on getting a tall climbing rose this year but I’m a bit worried it will be a difficult spot for it. Would it be a good idea to keep it in a large pot for the first year or until it’s tall enough to reach more light because of a laurel hedge? Thanks for the great eye candy 👍
That's a pretty good plan. It gives you the flexibility to adjust the height or position while it's growing the height you want, and the extra year of root growth will be helpful too before getting it in the ground.
@@FraserValleyRoseFarm thanks! I feel like this spot will be fine once the plant is established but it might be difficult to start with for a small plant. So this would really be more like an extra pot up stage 😋. Thanks!
Hi Jason, love your list of roses! I have 'The Fairy' rose and the tag said it will grow only to 2' and that's how tall it is in my garden. Prolific bloomer of soft pink flowers. Should it grow taller? I would love to get my hands on a Maurice Utrillo and the Cinco de Mayo. They look so bright and vibrant!
Thank you Jason for your informative videos. I live in SW England so a mild temperate climate. My question is, if I use a large builder's bag (a good 3 foot across) could I mix good quality garden soil with potting soil (cheaper for me) plus fertiliser?
Not pot related but what is the closest you’d recommend planting roses together to make a hedge? I’m wanting to plant a hedge Olivia Roses Austin and read to plant them 18” apart. Is that too close for good air circulation?
I love the Summerland Ornamental Garden, I've been a few times since I don't live far. Does it matter if the container is plastic, clay, or ceramic? Also, do you have all of those roses for sale, I am heading down in late Spring, depending on the weather condition on the Coquihalla, lol, and would like to take a look at some of them? Thanks for the info, appreciate it.
Thanks Debra. Many of these are either in my mother stock or on order from suppliers - you probably won't find them all on display here at one time, but you'll definitely see some.
I bought a 1 gallon Bolero on its own root and planted in my zone 8A backyard last Spring. It performed the best among the 21 1st year roses I have - vigorous, extremely floriferous, disease free, exceptionally fragrant and surprisingly, not a favorite of the Japanese beetles. I was confused when seeing comments on the Internet that Bolero is susceptible to powdery mildew, or does not bloom much in other people’s yards. I wonder what may cause the difference - local climate? Grafted vs. own root? Full sun vs. partial sun? Soil conditions?
Can you do rose recommendations per growing conditions? Like very cold Alaskan/Canadian to hot humid to everything inbetween (acidic soil, boggy, salty, etc.)? I'm 8b Texas. 😊
Hi Jason! As soon as I heard u say Life of the Party I knew we would be best friends. I container garden only. I ask for recommendations for heavy fragrance roses.
Pretty much all of info on cultivars is freely available at www.helpmefind.com - it's like a Wikipedia of roses. Search the name of the cultivar and it will summarize everything from growing size to bloom form/color, fragrance etc. It also usually lists the patent or release date(s) at the bottom of the page. The patents expire after 20 years, so it's really easy. The cultivars aren't grown from seed - usually they're produced by cuttings or grafting from mother plants.
I have not been able to find the Eden Rose climbing rosé anywhere. All the nursery in my areas had them sold out on line before the arrival in the nursery. Can you help ?
Jason, I need help!! I have several rose bushes. I buy mostly from a place close to my house, Antique Rose Emporium, but I purchased a 6drift rose brushes last year. One of them has crown gall. It is next to a Tyler rose ( from here in Texas) how do I remove it... Or possibly cure it?.. Never had this issue ever... Rose Mama for 6 years.
I was wondering if you (or anyone out there) has any ideas. I planted a healthy Rio de Samba rose about a month ago. It got plagued with aphids. I sprayed it with water a few times to knock them off, but never got round to doing more. The roses next to it are doing great. But starting a week or so ago, the center of the leaves turn kinda brown, then the whole (once dark green) leaf turns yellowish, and withers up and falls off. The healthy leaves still have brown in the center. I don't know what to do. I am fertilizing, and trying to water just the roots as well. But I have no idea what else to do. Everything I look up says "blackspot", but there aren't spots, its kind of a browning center along the middle. Like a smudge of brown paint, like brown blush. I thought it was sunburn at first, but it seems to be universally on the leaves. My browning is coming from the center, a dark smudge blending with no clear line between that and the rest of the leaf, it fades out to the healthy green. The brown looks superimposed on top of a healthy green leaf, but its dark brown. Its on all of them. I live in Mesa AZ (98 degrees today), so its so hot and dry, I doubt its mold. I usually always water the roots, just sprayed a few times because of the aphids. Any tips at all would be deeply appreciated
Well I obviously can't diagnose from here, but I don't mind throwing in my .02 cents. Are you pretty confident in your fertilizer levels and that they're not too high. I've sometimes seen symptoms of high excess fertilizer and root die-back similar to what you're describing. Kind of an "off" olive type color to the foliage followed by rapid defoliation. That's certainly not the only thing it could be - a major stress to the roots could have similar symptoms with dissimilar causes.
It depends on the size of the container. A larger shrub or climber has higher demands for water and nutrients, and it can be hard to keep up with a smaller soil volume.
They're not fully established in our region, so no I don't really have direct experience. I've done a video reviewing some of the recommended solutions here: ua-cam.com/video/8sPnOVTmuso/v-deo.html
Sorry to hear it Romina - it's tough to diagnose from just the symptom of die-back, and this probably isn't the right forum for a back-and-forth about the growing conditions & initial health of the plants. If you don't have a local garden club or rose society, maybe check out one of the Facebook gardening groups on rose growing.

Great list of roses! I love the scented floribunda roses! I had two Julia Child for years and love them. This year I thought I’ll prune a bit more aggressively to get some new growth. I feel a trip to the garden centre will be more beneficial today than going plastering at work 😁😀👍
Sounds like a good plan!
Here for the comments! I also love the Drift roses for containers
I had Vavoom (orange) in a pot and it was gorgeous!
Thanks!
I have grace in a pot too doing very well .. & so is lady of shallot.. again both by David Austin
All of my roses are currently in pots. My two DA are ancient Mariner and Roald Dahl. RD is very good for pots but since all my pots are big 20-30 gallons really any rose can do ok in them for sometime
I have benjuman brittan & tranquillity ..both together insane pot..both by David Austin in 30 cm pot.. doing excellent
I have all 9 of my David Austin roses in large containers..& i’ll put the damask & moss roses of all heights & widths in tall pots too.. DA roses are doing very well in pots
Good to hear. Size of container makes such a difference.
Accidentally did a thumbs down and reversed it immediately but I think the error was "shared" with you. I love this video!
Don't worry about it for even a second. I never see any direct feedback except the comments. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
@Pauline Crispin
Considering that you move fairly often, re-potting with fresh soil and thinning the roots of your roses is probably going to give them the best environment to grow in. 🤙
Many thanks for the information
Thanks Pauline. I do like Coffee Bean - and it's a good size for containers. I wonder if you can find Indian Summer - great fragrance. The chapel is all done now, and I'll probably be giving a close-up view on the channel within the next couple of weeks.
Many thanks for the rise suggestions I will lokfor them. I have separated the 2 roses I had in one pot. There were signs of vine weevil. So another reason why they were not doing well. 🙄
Great video
Not really a recommendation but I picked up a Petite Knock Out on clearance last fall that I've got in a container. It was pretty ratty looking and isn't in a very pleasing shape, but it's already started growing like crazy with buds forming.
Good to hear!
I'm learning so much from your videos. Love the tips and recommendations as well. I don't grow roses, everything I tried to grow dies. Except for cactus lol. Keep up the great work!♥️
Thanks so much!
Great video again Jason. What is considered a very large pot? Glad you considered DA roses as I love them. Thank you for the excellent tips!
I have some massive pots in my yard that are about 30" across (!) and I haven't needed to repot those roses in many years.
Thanks for your expertise and common sense approach. I have a question: when you mention a gardening zone for a rose, is the number used meant to represent the lowest area tolerated? I live in zone 9b, so if a rose is considered Zone 5, it is just fine here. Yes?
Yes, exactly. It's a measure of the expected lowest temperatures the plant will tolerate in the garden.
Merci.😊
god bless you more
Jason I have Maman Turban, Sonia Rykel, Home and Garden in big terracotta pots...but I would like to buy Little Withe Pet
I love your channel thank you for sharing so many awesome tips !! I do have a question where can you purchase some of the container roses you mentioned ?
It varies by your market - so you'd start with either local nurseries or mail order vendors who sell into your area.
Thanks - no, a couple of the cultivars I grow may be related but not the species.
Hi Jasoon,
I. hate to admit that I removed my formerly beautiful New Dawn climber last summer because it was not blooming at all. My plan is to plant a new New Dawn in the same spot this spring, but I think I would have benefitted from your advise to get the flowers back on the original well established plant!
Hi Jason, which climate zone are you in? Thanks for all the useful tips.
We're zone 8
@@FraserValleyRoseFarm Thanks.
What size container would you recommend for a 36" Iceberg standard?
I'd still be looking at that 20" diameter as a pretty good ballpark.
Thanks!
Hi Jason, do you have Cream Veranda for sale?
Not currently, but I'm hoping for later in the season.
Thanks Leia. It's all situational - I've had The Fairy a bit taller, but no complaints if it stays low.
@@FraserValleyRoseFarm Good to know! Thanks Jason 😃
Thank you Jason for your informative videos. I live in SW England so a mild temperate climate. My question is, if I use a large builder's bag (a good 3 foot across) could I mix good quality garden soil with potting soil (cheaper for me) plus fertiliser?
Sounds pretty reasonable - a nice size for even a larger rose.
Terrific video, very helpful. Can you give the source company for Elle? Thank you
Sure. I got mine from Star Roses
Not pot related but what is the closest you’d recommend planting roses together to make a hedge? I’m wanting to plant a hedge Olivia Roses Austin and read to plant them 18” apart. Is that too close for good air circulation?
It might be a bit tight, but for a hedge it will come down to your pruning to manage the space between the stems.
Many of these are either in my mother stock or on order from suppliers - you probably won't find them all on display here at one time, but you'll definitely see some.
any thoughts of growing roses in grow bags?
It's like any other container except a little more prone to drying out. How about a bag inside of a more decorative pot?
I bought a 1 gallon Bolero on its own root and planted in my zone 8A backyard last Spring. It performed the best among the 21 1st year roses I have - vigorous, extremely floriferous, disease free, exceptionally fragrant and surprisingly, not a favorite of the Japanese beetles. I was confused when seeing comments on the Internet that Bolero is susceptible to powdery mildew, or does not bloom much in other people’s yards. I wonder what may cause the difference - local climate? Grafted vs. own root? Full sun vs. partial sun? Soil conditions?
Thanks for sharing your experience with Bolero - it always depends a lot on conditions.
Thanks Elaine. Have you seen this one: ua-cam.com/video/r0HjUhdIC3I/v-deo.html
I want to try to get into Roses but I’m having the hardest time finding out what isn’t under Patent and finding seeds or where to buy them.
Would Smaller centifolias work?
Not generally. Aside from being a bit large for the treatment, centifolias are also once-blooming, making them less interesting as a potted plant.
Any veranda or just cream only?
The whole Veranda series is pretty well suited for containers.
I have not been able to find the Eden Rose climbing rosé anywhere. All the nursery in my areas had them sold out on line before the arrival in the nursery. Can you help ?
I'll definitely have some locally this year.
Incurable I'm afraid. Dig it up and remove. Disinfectant your tools and don't plant a rose in the same soil
@@FraserValleyRoseFarm should I burn the soil area?
I'm not sure how effective a surface burn would be at disinfection, so I probably wouldn't bother.
Will a fragrant rose deter deer?
No, they don't seem to mind the fragrance of roses
Ediths little darling. Three is a 30” terracotta pot
Thanks Diana
Thanks so much!! I'd been dumping fertilizer on it trying to be helpful. I will definitely stop that. Thanks so much!
What about Knock out roses ?
The classic knockout roses were a bit large in general for containers, but I think they have released some more compact varieties
Can any rose be grown in a container?
It depends on the size of the container. A larger shrub or climber has higher demands for water and nutrients, and it can be hard to keep up with a smaller soil volume.
The Japanese Beetles are eating up my roses. Do you have this problem and if so, how do you combat them?
They're not fully established in our region, so no I don't really have direct experience. I've done a video reviewing some of the recommended solutions here: ua-cam.com/video/8sPnOVTmuso/v-deo.html
Can you give some suggestions for roses that produce a lot of rose hips.
Rosa rugosa is pretty unbeatable for hips.
All great choices unless you live here in zone 9 ☹️
The cold hardiness is for the lowest (coldest) zone they'll handle - so there's no real risk in zone 9. Lucky you!
Every roses i plant always die the branch comes black why
Sorry to hear it Romina - it's tough to diagnose from just the symptom of die-back, and this probably isn't the right forum for a back-and-forth about the growing conditions & initial health of the plants. If you don't have a local garden club or rose society, maybe check out one of the Facebook gardening groups on rose growing.

Not insane.. in same pot i meant to say
Great list of roses! I love the scented floribunda roses! I had two Julia Child for years and love them. This year I thought I’ll prune a bit more aggressively to get some new growth. Well, I lost the one as I think I pruned to early (December) 🥲
Need to find me another one. They are easy to take care of. I like them in pots better. Never had much luck with roses on the ground but the ones in pots always looked good!
