Watching them play was like watching a telepathic ballet. There's will never be a duo that surpasses what they could do playing together. Pure artistry. Stockton's ball control is unparalleled to this day. His ability to steel, intercept and fight for rebounds, and win, against immensely bigger men all show how much heart, skill, perception and awareness he possessed. Karl Malone was lucky to have a teammate that shared a telepathic bond with him.
Perfect analogy there was a reason why Stockton and Malone were on the Dream Team....I would say Jon Stockton may well have been the greatest point guard of all time...
division100 only one pair better in nba. We all know they are.. but these two were special. If they didnt play together they would not have been this great
Personally, I would say this was arguably the greatest duo ever! The 1996-1998 years the Utah Jazz almost took the bulls to 7 games and could’ve beat them, they won over 60 games together a season and they Jeff hornaceck, Greg ostertag, the jazz were so good Malone was league mvp and Stockton led the league in assist & steals at the same time🐐🐐🐐
Stockton had a higher assists per game average than anyone until his 15th season. Had Magic played past his prime, or Stock retired in his, Stock would have the record over Magic. Next guy behind Stockton is Oscar Robertson with roughly 1 less assist per game (9.5)
Stock and Magic played 7 seasons in the game together. In this period Stock has 4 seasons as NBA assist leader while Magic has 2. Magic in this time at age between 25-31. It was his prime. Stockton was at between 22-28. Stockton assist percentage is higher when they were playing both at the same years. Only reason Magic's asist percentage is higher because he did not play to 40 years old. Magic had 9921 assist in 874 games while Stock broke the record at 860 games. Of course this stats are not everything and does not mean Stock is better than Magic. Magic's style was flashy and entertaining but overally it applies Stockton as the best assister in the game in my opinion.
It is not like that actually. Stockton tied the record at 94-95. Magic's last season was 90-91 before HIV incident. He did play 1 season later on but that does not make a difference. Point is when he tied the record he done that with lesser matches.
Magic was better though. If you say otherwise you're just a Utah Jazz Homer or one of those Great White Hope type individuals who defends and overrates the hell out of their own kind (see eminem fans). Magic was 15x the player John Stockton could ever hope to be lol
This makes me proud to be a Utahn. Man.... the days in the 90's when the Jazz were second best twice. Went to the playoffs twice and lost. Second time should've won. First loss is the iconic Michael Jordan 3 pointer at the last second
No hate to MJ, but I was really rooting for these two against the Bulls. It seemed a shame that such a legendary duo would go without at least one pair of rings...
I thought #2 should have been #1 as it was in the Finals (Game 4 of 1997 Finals) and was one of the greatest clutch plays in NBA history. If the Jazz had only defeated the Bulls in that series, that assist would still be acclaimed today as one of the greatest moments in NBA history. I also remember a tremendous fasbtreak dunk by Karl Malone over Kareem Abdul Jabbar in the 1988 Western semifinals. It was a right 7-game series and was sort of a "coming out" party for Stockton, Malone and the Jazz. Now was that dunk over Jabbar not off a Stockton assist?
@@jfrank7540 Check. It is Game 4, won by Utah 78-73. Game 3 was actually a Utah rout. I'm old and remember those Finals clearly. Besides, in 2:20, you hear Marv Albert himself in the clip saying, "The Bulls up 2 games to 1" as MJ takes the shot which missed and let to the Stockton rebound and long pass to Malone.
Stockton and Malone were unlucky not to have better teams around them. If they had had like a Robert Horry kind of player, maybe they would have won a ring.
Mj/pippen vs malone/stockton is an even match... Lucky for chicago they have rodman.. the only man that can stop malone.. rodman destroyed malone physically and psychologically..
Hornacek and Russell actually did fine and contributed a lot, more than just a big shot here and there like Horry. What the Jazz needed was a solid Center.
Jomar Magallanes the team around Jordan and Pippen was a thousand times better than that around Stockton and Malone. The Bulls had Dennis Rodman, Kukoc, Ron Harper, Steve Kerr, Luc Longley and so on.
Skazellino I partially agree with you. Indeed the Jazz had some good players like Hornacek and Russell, but not good enough like the Bulls with Kukoc and Rodman for example. But I completely agree that the Jazz big problem was in the center position. Greg Ostertag was a complete disaster.
Classic pick and roll, Malone only needed one dribble from the three point line....not many were willing to take a charge from Malone....HE WAS A BIG DUDE...IT WAS GONNA HURT!! And when the switch got crossed up and Stockton came off the pick undefended he seemed to always shoot way above 50% from the floor.... night after night.....that's probably the best tandem in basketball history, Jordan-Pipen, Johnson-Worthy, Bird-McKale, were all good, but not the same consistency as these guys.
Malone have Stockton a huge assist count and Stockton have Malone a huge supply of points. Truly a travesty that they couldn’t win but goes to show you how great of a player Jordan was
one thing that I used to not get when I was a kid: if Stockton as the ball, why are you not doubling up on Malone? answer: because no matter what you do, Stockton has the skill to make you pay for it. 🤷♂️ I haven't watched ncaa basketball in years but in later high school (2000-2002), I dated a young lady whose dad worked at Gonzaga. They, then anyway, still played with Stockton like flare.
Yes and ppl bash Stockton acting like he was the most privileged person ever to be playing with Malone 😂😂😂😂. Dmb fks it’s the other way around Stockton made Malone a beast in points and highlights.
Hey guys I'm not into basketball so pls do not laugh at my questions :) 1. Was Stockton able to dunk himself? 2. Is it fair to say that if it wasn't for Stockton then Malone wouldn't have become a second best all time scorer?

Stockton definitely doesn't have unparelled ball control given kyrie and cp3 exist

Number 2 should be number 1. That catch and pass by Stockton, that full court run by Malone... thing of beauty.
It's sad they never won the championship but WOW what an amazing duo....fun to watch, even here on reruns!
Best duo without a championship
Bro, these two were like the villains in 90s Bulls era.. Like the super strong final bosses in video game haha

People sit there and say Magic would hold the assist record if he played longer, yet Stockton tied Magics record against Magic...
that was a single game record. try to keep up.

my fave duo growing up. when the raps were a new franchise i was still here in the stands with my jazz gear head to toe 😅
it was always war when these two came to Houston.

@Ramses Stafford yes and thats why we won finals 2x and u didnt 😅
@Ramses Stafford Truth is, Jordan retired first time because he was scared of getting destroyed by Rockets!!!
@Ramses Stafford duh 😑 im lost right now. Are you a Bulls fans or what😂
@Ramses Stafford sorry but many people hate Rockets for no reason, but the truth is we are most consistent Team in NBA history
I grew up going to Jazz games in the old Salt Palace, they were fun to watch.
