I remember reading about it and the thing is, the Combine are actually a lot smarter than the HL1 soldiers, and that's the problem. Soldiers are a lot more simple and it's easier to understand what they're doing and why they're doing it, whereas the Combine actually try to find cover and turtle up a lot more. They have all these risk assessment systems and stuff that make them LOOK a lot dumber on the surface, because they're always trying to run to a specific cover point, even if that means they have to run straight at the player to get there.
Honestly, very happy he's played Map Labs in any capacity. I have tried suggesting more recent Map Labs competitions to both Vinny and Joel over the years, but they never got around to them 😂 (Last time Vinny played ML was back in 2020 and the comp he played came out in 2019) But honestly, there is no better time than now for either of them to play Map Labs, as these recent submissions/comps really demonstrate the raw talent of the mappers involved, with things like VScript allowing the engine to be pushed further from its usual gameplay formula. Not to mention HL2's 20th anniversary is coming up, so that's probably gonna make for some interesting streams.
