Drama. Gypsy steals baby whilst nursemaid chats to soldier. Dog searches for baby and find its. Then leads father to house. 1905 Produced by Cecil Hepworth - British film pioneer at a total cost of 7.3.9. A family affair - the cast being Mr & Mrs Charles Hepworth the distinguished father and mother of the stolen baby Barbara, then six months old. Mr and Mrs Smith (the only paid actors). Soldier lover, the hag who stole the baby, the careless nurse. Re-touches in the Hepworth studio. The film star - however was the wonderful dog Rover trained by Mr Hepwroth. Rover, who tracked down the villainess in her loft (painted by Mr Hepworth) got all the hands and applause wherever this first British feature film was shown.

Oh Wow, this was so beautiful! So wonderful to see a dog utilized as a character so early in film, and the structure and pacing of this story of heroism is wonderful! Seeing what is at stake in this tale, is actually tense to think about; thinking about how it would feel for the parents for something so heartbreaking to happen, but, ultimately, the idea of Rover saving the day, and seeing everything turn out well in the end is quite wholesome and beautiful! 😊
Oh my gosh, I also just read about it on Wikipedia, and found out the film's significance! So cool! And, this popularized the name Rover for dogs! 😯

The dogs name was Blair. Based on his coat thickness in this copy, I suspect it may have been one of the later remakes?
