Old-school charm or modern sports car? | Morgan Plus Four review | The Autocar Vodcast

- Episode four of the Autocar vodcast, Middle-Aged Tread, finds Matt Prior and James Disdale behind the wheel of one of the most enduring cars on the planet, the Morgan Plus Four.
Morgan's archetypal sports car has been through many iterations in its life but tries to do the same as it ever did: charm and entertain, while looking like the kind of classic sports car you'd hand on to your children.
But how good is the latest 2024 variant? Is it an old-fashioned immediate classic or does it have some moves beneath its pretty bodywork? Prior and Disdale discuss.

I bought my Morgan Plus 4 from new in 2015 and still have it. And I still love it despite it's foibles. However, a lot of the local Morgan owners are swapping to the new CX generation Plus Fours and are loving them. They are very different cars - but still Morgans. I can see myself changing in the next few years.
Yet another great Episode. I love the idea of Morgan ownership but , pretty much as you said, wouldn't be inclined to buy one. A firnd did some years back and they are very quaint. If I owned one, it would have to be an older Plus 8. Mainly for the noise but deletion of the bumpers and the black panel under front of car have spoiled the looks for me. It looks too bare/unfinished without them. Ditto no Spare Wheel/luggage rack fitted to the back of the car. If the spare wheel is now an optional extra, I'd say that's "rather mean" on an £75K car. If it's all for weight saving, then at least fit a 'get you home' space saver..
Two old blokes BSing their heads off in a car with sliding windows; great stuff!
I’d love to know where that road is, it would be interesting to run my current toy down there
Brilliant car ! Unfortunately I am 6'4'' with a 35'' inside leg.... Anyone got a hacksaw ? 🤔
Given the way modern cars perform I think I would be happy with a 0.9l engine, to be honest 😲
We went around the factory years ago and were totally amazed. We could go anywhere ( other than the Le Mans & Prototype area), talk to anyone on the tools. Great PR.
It's still a good day out now but they have better coffee!
Great vid… sort of appealing cars… but sooooooooo exxy!!! 💰💰💰😳😳😳
As the owner of a MX5 ND3 (184hp for little over one ton) I approve this car. Mine is underpowered compared to it but looks arguably nicer -if you prefer modern design-, probably revs higher and it's much, much cheaper tho, less than half the price 😊
Out of the actual competitors I'd get the KTM X-Bow!
This week the starting price for the manual has finally been lowered to £69995. For a handmade car, even the basic spec is good enough and a car that can be driven everyday rather than just on Sundays!
Having owned 2 Aero 8s, which were lovely cars to look at, but neither felt like the rear wheels were connected to the fronts, Morgan need to re-invent their chassis development department
£90k for a 2 litre 4 pot from a Mini??? Sorry, but that's nuts - for that money, I'd want the B58 3L 6 as a minimum - no matter how good the rest of the car is, I simply could not stomach paying that much money for that engine.
It's a handbuilt car to your spec, it's a good price. I know it's a lot of money, a serious amount of money, but you really have to drive it to realise that that engine is enough on todays roads.
with no bumpers a small bump could be very costly
The secret is to drive carefully.
On the Golf with the 2L 8v, I think you mean the BRM - Brian Rickets Motorsport conversion? He did the engine mods for GTi Engineering cars. I had a BRM Campaign, it was very special!
You struggle to put the seat back while you are driving?
Considering they turned round a couple of times, there was plenty of opportunity to adjust the seat at a safer point in time...
This two old guys chatting while bogging and engine is REALLY boring ie too boring to watch. (And I'm an old guy.)
So wrong. Lots of good points about chassis dynamics.
Yes. It did drag on a bit and become a bit aimless..
Doesn’t sound as good as an old Rover V8, but fast enough and very economical. Does it still use leaf springs at the back?
Your discussion about the gearbox options was interesting. I visited the Morgan factory on Wednesday and was surprised to learn that whilst the manual cars are most popular for test drives, 80% of paying customers now choose the automatic option.

I think it looks great. Richard Hammond made me like these cause he drove one in a documentary of his in search of the holy grail..then even appeared in Top Gear. And oh one that got flooded not long ago. Gotta love the Morgans tho it seems like they are cursed in a way.
Does anyone know the roads that were being driven on - was it near the Morgan factory around Malvern?
It's very impressive to watch you grow and evolve as a content creator. Your videos are always beautiful!😈🛻🙉
Autocar’s done videos from start, there are 1000’s if you look it up. Rather, they’ve had a long break but recently started a slow comeback
