My 2 pit mix dogs live and sleep indoors but want to hunt and pull like a freight train on the leash. We have turtles and rabbits on 5 acres, and neighbors have horses, ducks, chickens, other neighbors have small pugs (16)
I'm in Florida and want to know how to "un-train" the dogs to hunt when we go out.
I've ended up driving them out a couple miles to a desolate road and walk them there, random locations.
Appreciate any advice - - BTW running these 2 dogs has cured my gout !!

I wish I had an easy fix for this one. I have the same issue with my pitbull mix, Jack. He has an insane amount of prey drive that he directs to rabbits and squirrels. I used to think that any dog behavior can be changed, but Jack is making me rethink that view. This prey drive is a pretty big part of who he is and he is not going to let it go easily. He is getting better around squirrels, but with rabbits he goes crazy!

I still believe that it is possible to change ANY dog behavior, in theory. To change this behavior I would have to find some other outlet for this prey drive that Jack would really get into before trying to extinguish this rabbit chasing behavior. Maybe something like flyball or the like. It would be a lot of work!

@@JaimieScott I encouraged "hunting" lizards when the 2 were puppies, and being born October 2019 these were "COVID" puppies - - unable to socialize from 3 months to about a year.. People walking dogs would turn around or cross the street. Family didn't visit as much.
They don't chase frisbees or balls. Maverick is a pillow thief in the house and Goose will jump thru a screen window.

Sounds like they might benefit from walking on prong collars (the right ones, fitted and used properly) if you don't currently, and watching my video on "Dealing with Distractions" on the website.
