Every coach (musical, athletic, professional, fitness, life, etc.) should be required to watch how Sam Johnson gives constructive feedback. The man is the master of identifying areas that can improve without hurting confidence. He gives solid criticism without tearing people down. Uplifting professional = Sam Johnson

Wow, I gotta agree. When he was going really big and heavy (so much so that you think his voice might crack) just to fall into that soft, pretty note.
That definitely takes a good bit of control over your voice. I’ll pay more mind to my transitions from “small to big” voices when singing now!

    • @SparklingSilverCurls

@@margicates553 Pink is singing during her aerials, and is singing very well!! Perhaps, you're thinking of Britney who never sings live...and barely sings on her CDs either.
Sam's touched upon the fact that some performers can sing and dance, and it doesn't impact their vocal abilities. It's about breath control and keeping the proper pressure on the air stream going through the vocal chords. Broadway singers do it every day. Heck, marching band kids do it too. Moving, almost running, and still being able to play their instruments in tune (well, most of the time).
Here is that Try performance at the 2012 AMA's:
      ua-cam.com/video/eqUFTWi1pVg/v-deo.html
Or, Sam, would you be willing to review Pink's Glitter in the Air performance at the 2010 Grammy's?

Someone commented below that, "Every coach (musical, athletic, professional, fitness, life, etc.) should be required to watch how Sam Johnson gives constructive feedback." As his student for the past few months, I concur. Sam is a fabulous voice coach, very mature for his age, and understands singing dynamics at a deep level. In studying with him, it's not just my voice that got better, I was also able to open up my emotional range and degree of personal expression

As your usual offering, Sam, I learned so much to apply to my own singing. Specifically, when you described the “quiet flip” of his voice from chest to head (hope I got that right) I sat and practiced it myself while watching the video. It was super helpful to “know how it feels” as you are always iterating. Love ❤️ always

Could you please react to Michael Jackson's Billie Jean performance from Oslo in 1992? I think it could be really interesting to analyze because it wasn't supposed to be live. The playback didn't start so Michael had to decide to sing it live last minute. It might be really interesting to compare it to a performance where he knew he'd be singing live and see what the differences are! Thanks so much!

YukinaKudo That is an interesting idea.

@@MissCaraMint Thanks! While MJ was a master at touring and concerts, he was still human and couldn't be prepared for everything. During the Oslo performance especially, you can tell things were going wrong left and right throughout the entire show, especially with the tech. I've always wondered how that effected him considering how much of a perfectionist he was.

YukinaKudo It would be interesting also to see what effect the crowd had on him(I haven’t watched the performance, but I know Norwegians). Norwegian aren’t terrably responsive as a crowd generally. If things were going wrong that may have stressed him out more.

@@MissCaraMint I did notice that when I was watching. Usually, the crowd is so freaking loud that it's hard to hear Michael even with the mike full working. However during the Oslo performance, the mike was the biggest issue. Even the songs he lip-synced were hard to hear the sound was so bad. Also, they had to adjust the performance to account for it still being light out. They couldn't use the screens for Smooth Criminal and I think the lighting had to be adjusted as well. So ya know, no stress for Michael at all XD

Thank you! I'm always looking for more analysis of Broadway singers.

one of my favorite singers • such control throughout phrasing, and completely inhabiting a character • would love to see your analysis of his cover of "It's All Coming Back To Me Now" at 54 Underground and/or especially his mashup of "Home/Over the Rainbow" from Seth Speaks, particularly the beginning mouth stretch/reset (is that just a stretch or warm-up?), the 17sec beautiful legato joining the two songs midway, and the final ~ 17sec BELT. I would have completely exhausted breath support after the first second or two of such an explosive "can't I", haha.

Loved this performance and your review of it! It’s so much fun to learn the dynamics of singing, even if I don’t sing at all lol...
