bug at 14:40 is an aphid 13:30 is a thrip and the first bugs with two spots on them that are red are two spotted spider mites you could've saved all these plants with a 4-5 day spray schedule with pyrethrin's as well as one or two root drenches
I had to give up on diluted neem oil as pest prevention because they are not suitable for most of the plants I have. It burned the leaves of my cane type begonias, marantas and aroids regardless of how much I diluted it. I can't use it on velvety or fuzzy leaves because it's impossible to clean off the oily film. I've tried alcohol and hydrogen peroxide solutions. Even diatomaceous earth did not work and was so messy and hard to clean. I had to give in and use pesticide (for houseplant use so bees are safe!). But I did get the one with pyrethrin as the active ingredient which is derived from Chrysenthemums. It's completely biodegradable and has a very short half life. It's one of the earliest known insecticides. The Chinese used it hundreds of years ago and in the middle east it's known as 'Persian Powder'. Even French soldiers used crushed chrysenthemum plants to keep fleas and body lice away during the Napoleonic wars. I tried to find powdered versions to experiment on but can't find any online or the garden centre hence buying the modern day version spray bottle. I thoroughly spray my plants and let dry. A couple days after I give my plants a 'shower' but by 3-ish days most of it would have degraded. The natural versions break down easily and has no accumulative effect in soil or water. I had an aphid and spider mite problem but they've gone away with 2 applications. It's not for everyone, I know. But with the amount of plants I have it is currently my best option and I put a lot of research into it before using it. Best of luck to you and your plants!
This sounds like a great product... did you get over your infestation in the end? I'm having a horrid time with thrips and have all but destroyed my plants with neem oil and soap!
@@lysduchamp I used certified organic and natural pyrethrin bug and larvae spray and has worked well. Thrips require a longer treatment (in my experience). Once properly treated they stay away. BUT... I've been getting new infestations from new plants that I got. I do not have a lot of space left for plant quarantine and in the summers it's impossible to not have the windows open. With thrips I remove all the soil and give my infected plant a good wash then apply treatment. The infected soil goes into a sealed old paint bucket and I use the infected soil for nothing else but to put out BBQ fires because thrips can survive composting. Best of luck!
Thank you so very much for this valuable information. I have only been doing plants since July and am constantly looking for pest. All the research and pics isn't the same as seeing them in action. I bought a different microscope while watching this haha. Now gotta watch pt 2. Love your channel, u and your content, thx again!!
Thank you for posting this! I watched it this morning and decided to check my plants for pests. I then found thrips on my calathea magic star!! Its a reminder i must check them more often. Luckily it hasnt spread to any other plants so i think ive caught them in time 🤞🏻🤞🏻
I would love an update on whether you discovered more thrips? Because in my recent HORRID experience with thrips: once you have discovered them, it's too late! I hope you were right and you didn't have an epidemic like i do with my houseplants right now!
That microscope is awesome! I use a handheld magnifying glass and a mini microscope that only magnifies up to about 20x. Super fun looking at my plants checking for pests 🤓 Suspicious spots are usually just lint or dog hair.
Eww, I feel you on the thrips, having it on my monstera atm. They deposit the eggs into the plant tissues and the whitish ones are the larvae, yes 😷 also lol at the cats having the time of their lives in the background.
I'm having probs with my plants as well and just bought beneficial nematodes. Apparently it can kill most of these pests. Maybe u can try too and make a video of it. Would love to see the effects on microscope 😄
Hahaha I just found out your channel and I LOVE your energy!! Thanks for the fun video :) I have pests myself right now and try to figure out what to do... I will look at your next vid! :)
if one they all have it lost leave on two of my long time plant over did with the neem and all the other stuff I used oils and cinnamon powders also had fungus gnats and the only thing that worked is Spectracide Malathion half tea spoon and little dawn soap in water bottle with in seconds they where gone seen fungus gnat two days later and spayed again plants colors are back and there doing great good luck also took out mites on 3 of them thankful for this product
Hey Rose, that was really informative and disgusting 🤪- I always kill bugs with my fingers when I see some, I will not do that anymore because now I know how they look like 🤢. Especially the white bug on your turtle peperomia was horrible! I have problems with my marantas at the moment. I have treated them but I think the treatment was too harsh on them.
😂Hello Sir😂This was the first time I have ever seen those nasty little critters up close and personal...eeewwww! You have made me rethink buying clearance plants. I feel so bad for them, but NOW?!?! I fear I have thrips in 2 of my philodendrons they look otherwise healthy, but they each have a leaf that is slowly yellowing😭😭😭. I am so happy you put the link for the microscope, I have to have one...but oh so creepy. You did a wonderful job though, , you're brave..thank you. You have a new subscriber!💚🌱
Awesome video! I mean like really great 👍🏼🌿 those white bits on your hybiscus were thrown off skins I believe, like snakes many growing bugs shed their skin when outgrown. Same goes for that waving bug on your peperomia prostrata, my goodness that bug will give me nightmares!! Did you find out what they all were too? Because I have those yellowish ones too, I’m thinking thrips larvae 😬 good luck fighting them 💪🏼🌿
Hi Roos, I have been fighting meally bugs that came into my home on 2 hoya plants 2 years ago, I had no idea what they were, I live in Canada and meally bugs don't survive outdoors here. I believe I now have the problem under control, but I am very cautious now.Once a month I put my plants in the bathtub and spray my plants with about 50/50 water and rubbing alcohol, and let it sit for about half a hour, then spray with a lemon dish soap and water mix, and leave that on for about half a hour, then spray with a strong spray of warm water. The rubbing (isopropyl) alcohol kills the bugs on contact, so if I see any bugs in between I use a cotton swab (Q-tip in Canada) and rubbing alcohol to kill them one by one. I hope this helps in your fight against bugs.
Boil water. Mix in Neem Oil + Dr. Bronners Sal Sud's. Wait to cool to room temp. Spray your leaves (top and underneath), stems, and the soil 2-3 days a week.
I wish I would have followed you 2 years ago when u made this video but then again I wouldn't have been much help because I wasn't into plants back then I've been into plants about a year and half now an Green lacewings are the trick!!!!!!!
Love the way to call those bugs out😅.Always look forward to your video s 😘I cried when you throw out the string of turtles😢They are impossible to find them in Fresno California😔
Found it! Thank you so much! That is really cool! I am having a real struggle differentiating between "mealybugs" and "ladybird nymphs", or "white ladybug larvae" or "mealybug destroyers" and which, if any, are the same with different names. When I Google all of the above, in order to see what they look like and compare with what I think I am seeing on my plants, I am seeing the same images for all of them, when I know that while some may be similar, one is a pest and the others are beneficial. I am literally about to pull my hair out trying to identify them. 🤪 There is so much wrong and misleading information out there online, and it's so frustrating! Maybe a microscope will help, although my Note 9 phone takes pretty decent and close up photos, all considering.😫
Yes that is correct - I never edited it. I might still edit it but I've learned A LOT since I filmed this. So I'm not sure if it's still accurate and useful. I did make some other videos about pests. Sorry about the confusion!

I never made the follow up on this one, but I've made several other videos about pests and bugs. I'm currently fighting my pests with good bugs which seems to work really well
I'll have to look at this video again, but the flat mites I have seen on this same microscope last year were very very small even with the microscope. I don't remember seeing sucj small ones before
@@plantwithroos the small things you saw were the nymphs. We both agree that these are mites right? do they make web? probably not. therefore, false mites
@@enigma8147 they actually did make webs. The flat mites I mentioned in my comment I found recently, and didn't film or post them. Those were mature ones and very much smaller than the ones in this video. I had to be fully up close with the microscope to even see the orange dots. So I still disagree that these were flat mites
It might be really cool if you kept the camera still so we can look at them. lol could you remove soil and take the tiny plants and give them a quick soak under/in soapy water?
They say neem oil supposed to work but I am not seeing it on my plants 👀👀👀👀You are so funny!! 5:47 reaction was hilarious!!🤣🤣🤣🤣still watching and subscribed already but why throw them away? What magnification is your microscope? Is it 1000x or something higher?
This is an old one I think it was 1000x yes - just a basic one from amazon!
What kind of microscope did you get?
They're linked in my Amazon storefront! I linked those on my website since I have a US and EU one www.plantwithroos.com/favs- scroll down all the way

Where did you get that gadget there??? I need this! So enjoyed watching this😮
Linked in the description!
I followed the link for ordering the microscope to read more information about it but I did not see it listed, only the plants, fertilizer, pots, etc.
