  • This is my review and first impressions of the new Arturia Minilab 3 keyboard MIDI controller that was just release a few weeks ago. In this video I unbox the Minilab 3 and test to see how easy it is to use and if it will be up to the task of handling the work flows I will be throwing at it. I try to be as real to life with it as possible so potential buyers will have a good idea of what it is like owning this MIDI controller.

Thanks, so much for this very informative video. I'm like you as regards the smaller keyboard and would want to use my Yamaha DGX670 for my input device while being able to utilize mini 3 features such as the Modulation Strip and Arpeggiator which do not exist on the DGX670.
So I would be very interested in knowing what is involved in setting this up in Ableton Light (license included with mini 3) or Cakewalk by Bandlab? Also, can the mini 3 be used to control NI Komplete Kontrol or Plugin Guru's Unify?
I have subscibed to your channel in the hope that you will be providing more of this type of video as to how you are utilizing the Arturia mini 3 contoller capabilities along with your full size keyboard.
No one on YT is currently producing videos addressing how to use the Arturia with a full size keyboard. You are the first person to even make mention of it in a video and in my humble opinion I feel that this information would be greatly appreciated by many YT subscribers.

Thank you Robert for the feedback! I try to be different for just another "go over the features" video. Instead I like to focus on the real world use of it, even if I'm getting more niche on who it helps. When I buy something I like to feel like I know the product as opposed to a promo video. I appreciate that you fit the niche I was trying to reach. I have a copy of Ableton Live on my laptop and will eventually do a follow up video. Oddly, I'm having terrible luck getting it to work with the laptop at the moment - I think I just need to reinstall something.

Transport keys on Minilab are much easier to integrate into Studio One by setting up a new external device, ie: add new device, select Mackie folder, select Control, set receive from Minilab 3 MCU

I just received my Minilab 3 and have installed Ableton Live 11 Trial (11.2.6 Build 2022-10-26) and Analog Lab V which I can either use in DAW mode or stand alone while playing from my Yamaha DGX670 keyboard.
    .
I really like in ALV the Go on Stage setting which allows you to save several different presets for a Song to my Playlists for easy recall.
I am currently experimenting with the ARP feature which works fine on the Minilab 3 keyboard but which I can't get to work from the DGX670. I contacted Arturia and was told that this was not possible but I don't understand why not as I am able to alter Pitch or Modulation when input from the DGX670 keyboard, so why not ARP?
Right now I am at a loss after trying several different Ableton Live 11 Preference settings for Input and Output switching between Minilab3 MIDI and Portable Grand 1 or 2 which appear as I/O on my system but won't ouput an arpeggiated note. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm afraid I don't have the ability to trouble shoot your system, and I use Studio One way more than Live, so I'm not an expert on it. Hopefully, someone else on the comments will have some helpful input. Obviously, make sure you're in Arp mode on the Minilab 3 (Shift+Arp).

@@WorshipBlender Thanks for your reply but am I to understand that you are using the Minilab 3 ARP function while using an external keyboard as your input device? I have been in contact with Arturia who informed me that the ARP function is internal to the Minilab 3 hardware and can not be activated by MIDI CC control. For ex: I can run ALV stand alone and select a preset instrument, which I can play from my DGX670 while using the knobs and faders of the Minilab 3 to control the preset but when I turn on ARP and play no arpeggiation occurs on the DGX670. If I play on the Minilab 3 keyboard it will arpeggiate, so if you are able to uae your external keyboard could you share your ALV I/O device settings or did you have to create a user template in the Arturia Midi Control Center software?

Funny that you compare it with a Novation. I'm here because my Novation LaunchkeyMini Mk3 is a total piece of s*** one of my biggest overall disappointments with recent technology. My frustration is overshadowed by sheer astonishment at how backwards a company can think in the 2020s. I had an Arturia keystep in the past and was disappointed with the construction as well and decided to go with different brands. However I find myself coming back to Arturta since it seems to get only worse with any alternatives...

Yeah, guitarists play thousands for a nice instrument, but synth companies keep giving us cheap plastic controllers for a few hundred bucks or less. Not that I want to spend more money, but we want to buy nice instruments too. That said, the Minilab 3, for a mini sized 2 octave keyboard at approximately $100 is a nice little instrument. But my expectation go way up for an 88 key full sized controller.

To find your arturia plug in while in Logic - you will find it in the instrument library in something like Hammond b3 . Go to your effects list to the bottom at AU , Aurturia . Otherwise it’s not actually playing through logic

Just got one last week, but I'm having some issues with the firmware update not being able to update the Midi Control Center Firmware due to error message "Firmware download failed" (Timeout). Please let me know if you're having the same issue.

I didn't have any problems on desktop, but did have an error on my laptop with MCC - it wouldn't find the Minilab 3 connected. I uninstalled and reinstalled and was able to fix it that way. Hope that helps.

@@WorshipBlender I was finally able to update it by utilizing the Bootloader Mode (Shift+Hold) and it worked fine after that.

The pads are good enough for finger drumming? How they compare with MPD{MPC pads?

      @WorshipBlender  7 місяців тому

Never owned MPC pads, so I'm afraid I can't provide useful feedback on that.

If studio One is what you're looking for think you'd be better off getting a nektar keyboard
