I know you like clear bottom tanks. How do address the accumulation of debris and such on the bottom when you only use a weir? Do you only rely on a vacuum? And what do you suggest for a clean look?
What do you think a near by aquarium store called aqua tech has a arowana about 4-5 in for $100 good deal and would it go well with a 9 inch long oscar and a parrot cichlid in a 93 gallon tank or no
does it also clean the bottom part of the aquarium? what if there is a fish poo or some left over that wont float and get to the overflow? what do you do about it? im interested in this system, awesome video!
I know this is a 5 years old video but can you confirm that acrylic won't bond well with glass? And I also read in the forum that acrylic absorb water overtime and it will expand; ripping apart the glue / silicone and creating some leak. Can you or anyone confirm this?
+wereboarder2009 silicone can work for acrylic in some situations. You have to sand the heck out of the edges you want to bond AND lay the silicone down thick. It doesn't look good for a display tank cause the sanding scratches the surface so bad. It won't be a really strong bond either-not for tank building, but it works for putting in baffles in an acrylic sump which is what I did. I wanted to be able to move the baffles if I decided to redesign the sump for any reason.
+wereboarder2009 I don't particularly agree. while we all know that acrylic doesn't bond well with silicone, an inside weir has pressure being placed passively instead of against it as an outside overflow box might. silicone would do the job and it does in a large majority of "reef ready" systems as well as diy sold weirs on glass tanks. on an acrylic tank, it only makes sense to weld it, but on glass, it is an option. it isn't as clean and you should sand, but it isn't impossible
Having an overflow-sump setup means that the sump (located under the tank) constantly provides water to the display tank. This fills it to about half way up the weir, where it overflows back into the sump at the same rate it is coming in the tank. This height will always be at that same level, unless the sump is dry. Evaporation still happens, but only the water level in the sump changes.
Hi Joey I have a few questions and if you can I would appreciate a reply. I am currently building a 400 liter aquarium, 160x50x50 cm with 10 cm brace on the top and one brace in the middle for additional strength. Made with 10 mm glass. Do you know if Ceresit CS 23 silicone is good enough for that aquarium? That is the only fish safe glass silicone I can get where I live. Will it help to add "L profile" aluminium as a trim all over the aquarium making it hold better? (I am scared it might come apart and that will maybe add more strength, or is that a bad idea) I noticed you are building mostly acrylic aquariums recently for yourself. Is it cheaper for you or you simply like it better over glass for some reason? Do you recommend adding styrofoam under the tank to even out pressure if a stand has little irregularities? And lastly, is it better to have dark filter with no light in it or is it ok for it to be transparent? What is better for beneficial bacteria to live in? Sorry for questions you probably answered in your other videos, I am currently rewatching them all for more info, and sorry for not so good English. Thank you for your reply.
I had the same setup with twin durso and it was great the weir was also a nursery for my African fry and the surface was super clean. Only negative was it dident clean the bottom and that got pretty dirty.
HEY one question. My aquarium is made out of glass and its reallllyyy heavy. 200x60x60 I see you all work with acryl glass, well i buyed this aswell to try out but not any silicone glue holds its togeder its like its slips off the surface of the acryl. what du you use in your video? diffrent type of Acryl?
would you recommend using an overflow like this or the smaller box style? I can't decide whether to build an overflow that runs from the bottom to the top of the tank or if one of the off the shelf overflow boxes will work. Need any input I can get. Thanks!
All your videos show a bottom drilled tank with a stand pipe. Is there a specific advantage of a bottom drilled tank? Why not just drill at the back at the required height?
just started in the fish keeping hobby and today was my first day with water in my tank, anyways my question is about an air stone I purchased, can I have an air stone that is too big for my 20 gallon fish tank?
Hey Joey, I was wondering... When you are preparing to make a new build, do you feel pressure to make the build using techniques and ideas that you haven't previously used on the channel, or do you always build it with your own tried and true, perfected methods?
Betta & Cory catfish are a great combo... but Cichilds and Bettas are not. Bettas are slow swimmers and all it will take is one aggressive Cichlid and its over for the Betta. Cichlids need larger and tougher tank mates in my opinion.
Cichlids are generally more agressive and will pick on other passive fish like the betta and Corry. Berta's only fight against males or other similar fish because they feel threatened and want to be the dominant male. Females can sometimes be very peaceful. Corrys will stay on bottom minding their own business. Bettas like a temp of 80, corrys like low ph and cichlids generally like a high ph. Research each fish individually and see if they require similar conditions. Then you can search them in pairs to see if they get along togeather. Also corrys like to be in groups of 10+ but 4 should be ok.
think I got some acrylic in my eye when you was routing the access hole should put safety glasses on the camera :D (jk, I get in to your videos to much) top job like always m8
I plan to take this design using a small trash can in my 55gal aquarium my cichlids are large and often break my equipment I thought this would be a cheap and less labor intensive idea for those of you with less time money tools and materials I hope it works out for me and anyone who wants to try it this way only concern I have is if the heater could melt the plastic and if putting large rocks in the bottom to sink it would take up too much room and I wont be able to fit all equipment
Awesome, the black acrylic really makes it look high class! Great job Joey!
It does for sure. Thanks!
Brilliant problem solving. Truly DIY King here. Loved how you got around the acrylic thickness problem.
All I can say is wow, you're a genius with aquariums. I wouldn't ever thought of doing that, great job.
Each of your diy videos always get me pumping..super smart
Is the tank itself acrylic or glass?
Great idea on bending the plastic! I never thought about cutting small grooves and then running the heat gun! Thanks!
Just a simple way to make the acrylic a bit thinner in the bends. The wide you make the cut, the more you can bend.

Can you use on glass tanks
I am enjoying this series, the tanks looking great, cannot wait to see the finished product!
Thanks ryan. Only a couple more videos to go.
Cant wait!
Is it okay to use clear acrylic for overflow ? And what is the thickness needed
I know you like clear bottom tanks. How do address the accumulation of debris and such on the bottom when you only use a weir? Do you only rely on a vacuum? And what do you suggest for a clean look?
I believe his answer to that is a good flow rate on the pump. If you have enough circulation there isn't anything building up on the bottom.
Hey Joey, I would love to build a weir out of glass. Is that project realistic? Thanks for your input!
I dont think so mate , glass aint flexible easy like acrylic
@@shiyamaifrad8933 thanks mate! I appreciate your thoughts!
@@vastedad your welcome and here u are after 2 whole years 😹🙂😌
great video sir!!! if a tank doesn't come drilled with holes for the sump how do you suggest getting that done on let's say a 220gallon tank?
Diamond coated hole saw for glass, wood hole saw for acrylic. I have a video for the glass, next week i will cover acrylic again.
BEAUTIFUL ....OUTSTANDING...VERY CLEAN
What kind of board is that?? Tnx
What material is It?
What do you think a near by aquarium store called aqua tech has a arowana about 4-5 in for $100 good deal and would it go well with a 9 inch long oscar and a parrot cichlid in a 93 gallon tank or no
what type of PVC did you use??
How do you calculate the flow rate?
Awesome the black acrylic really look nice.
does it also clean the bottom part of the aquarium? what if there is a fish poo or some left over that wont float and get to the overflow? what do you do about it? im interested in this system, awesome video!
good job joey. I must admit, I had never thought of slotting acrylic to make a uniform piece with bends. way to go
Came out really nice man like that its out of the way so big fish can swim freely in the middle of the tank.
yup! They actually completely stay away from it as well.
THEY :) as in Arowana and Red Hook's are doing well together? :)
Once again an awesome video, thanks Joey
I don't have these machines is there any place where I can buy it online?
I know this is a 5 years old video but can you confirm that acrylic won't bond well with glass? And I also read in the forum that acrylic absorb water overtime and it will expand; ripping apart the glue / silicone and creating some leak. Can you or anyone confirm this?
What type of router bit do you use for acrylic?
Can't wait for the plumbing part. I gotta do mine soon and wanna see how u did yours
My tank has 2 weirs. Is it possible for a fish to jump in the weir?
Who do you order fish from online when you are in Canada. All of the places I can find only ship into the United States. Thanks
Is that bean animal overflow ?
Your a wizard with fish tanks😂😂👌
love your builds 👍🏼
could you just use silicone to attach the weir? in case you wanted to remove/customize it later?
acrylic doesn't bond to silicone at all so that isn't really an option sadly.
+wereboarder2009 silicone can work for acrylic in some situations. You have to sand the heck out of the edges you want to bond AND lay the silicone down thick. We’re do I get the acrylic?
How can I calculate how much flow I need? How does it help with constant height with evaporation?
Generally 5-10 times the volume of the tank per hour as far as flow goes.
Having an overflow-sump setup means that the sump (located under the tank) constantly provides water to the display tank. This fills it to about half way up the weir, where it overflows back into the sump at the same rate it is coming in the tank. This height will always be at that same level, unless the sump is dry. +ItsAlleged thank you so much!
what about all the stuff that settles on the bottom of the tank?

is it possible to cut the teeth using something other than a table saw? would using a drill work?
An oldie but goodie here.
What are the black hoses that you used for your return called?
RJ Robinson lock line ie: www.bulkreefsupply.com/pumps-plumbing/plumbing/loc-line.html
You can find loc-line on eBay MUCH cheaper than from an online fish supply house.
Can you upload a file to be downloaded file that is the full measurement and materials?
Gorgeous! Nice man. Looks crisp :)
HEY one question.

what du you use in your video? diffrent type of Acryl?
As long their is no pressure pushing it off the glass it is fine. If the pressure pushes the acrylic away from the glass you need to use normal glass
How can I make a overflow draw the water from the bottom of the tank
Looks great dude! good job!
You really are the king!!
would you recommend using an overflow like this or the smaller box style? I can't decide whether to build an overflow that runs from the bottom to the top of the tank or if one of the off the shelf overflow boxes will work. Need any input I can get. Thanks!
Seth Barby overflow box would work great but you have to plan ahead in case of power outage and incase the overflow breaks.
I am waiting for that video. I guess it would be awesone

No such thing! Unless it's splashing all over or somehow bothering a sensitive fish
+ItsAlleged thank you so much
I am getting a 75 gal aquarium are Flowerhorn good fish for starters I'm a newbi
Can you make a video on ideas for making a weir for a glass aquarium

hey bro ..i want to ask one question out of this video... Can I put betta , cichlid and cory catfish together in a same tank???? answer if you know😕

Hey Joey greetings from Germany my Name is Jens i love youre channel great work man!Thumps up for you go ahead mate !!!
More good tips, thanks for posting!
I can’t find the tank build itself for some reason
Excellent work. I can't think of a better way to plumb a bottom drilled tank.
How do I remove a over flow
Like the idea on the cut to bend the weir.
worked really well.
Great video so much information gona have to watch it a few times....LOL BEST VIDEO LIBRARY ON YOU TUBE!
Thanks brother!
good work
ok awesome idea love to see the video ...... I'm not ballzy enough to try this lol and again great video sir
I have some small builds coming soon that you might feel more comfortable with.
What's going on at the bottom of the weir along the front? Looks like it's not part of that whole weir piece.
a reflection of under the tank where the plywood was cut out large enough to accommodate the plumbing. more on that next sunday.
the technical term for those grooves you used to bend the weir around the form is a "kerf" 😉
think I got some acrylic in my eye when you was routing the access hole should put safety glasses on the camera :D (jk, I get in to your videos to much) top job like always m8
haha thanks
plz make a video on your arowana and her new tank mates. Plz joey
When I move him, I will. Will be a couple weeks.
Interesting and Fired Up!!!
:)
Very clearly explain
damn that's a professional finish look
Agreed! looks good

it's not plastic... It's arcylic
Just doing it pro style Joey.
Thanks
AWWWWWW come on!! Your killing me with these "builds"!!
IS THERE A SECOND PART SHOWING HOW THIS WORKS JUST GOT A 280 GALLON AND I WON'T TO PLAN FOR THE FUTURE?
joey boy i want your number so we could talk about my fishes and what would be best for them so they won't die
rad
Making those teeth looked reallllllly tedious.
it was. but worth it. A router is much faster and cleaner, but more limited.
A stacked Dado blade would speed it up. $100
