If they lived longer I would have rats as pets. I had a pair when I was in my 20s and they were great, they were so smart and affectionate, like tiny dogs. I would even take them out with me all around town in my coat pockets. But I became so attached to them and they died of old age within just a few years. 😕
A lot of pet rats are descended from laboratory and experimental stock. It’s not old age, it’s diseases and degenerative conditions that are congenitally or genetically predisposed. I’ve had many rats, all rescues and the longest life was 3.5 years. But my mother found a wild rat, alive on a stick paper trap, at the home of a neighbour, and she rescued him. He lived to six. He lost muscle and nerve function in a leg from the stick trap (disgustingly cruel) but he was fine, he wasn’t in pain, he just couldn’t run. Six years. He was the sweetest little honey and so bonded to us.
My spouse and I were given a baby rat in 2009. His name was Boris. He was Siamese colored, creamy white mixed with tan and brown flecks on his head to his nose. Ruby eyes. He bonded with my spouse immediately and would crawl inside D's shirt and snuggle with him. We fell in love immediately, and we've rescued rats ever since. They steal your heart. I only wish they lived longer. Average is two to three years, but Boris and one other rat we had made it to four years. They are all about love.

oh my gosh. when I moved out of my parents home, I was a newbie at a lot of "homeowner things". there was a mouse in the house & I wanted to trap it & remove it but not kill it. i thought I bought a trap it could be removed from. to my horror it was attached with glue & they can't be removed from that. i was sobbing & desperate to find a way to get that poor mouse off... but there was no way. i learned a horrible lesson that day & is something I feel horrible guilt over 15 years later

Processed and commercial food is toxic for rats. Organic whole food safe for rats is ideal. Apparently, turmeric and ginger are 2 supplements rats can consume safely in appropriate doses, and both have anti-inflammatory properties, which can lower risk for chronic diseases, including cancer. There are other supplements that, when properly dosed, can improve general well-being. Purified drinking water and reducing other carcinogenic exposures in their environment like replacing commercial wood chip and other dusty bedding with fleece, towels, etc may also improve health.

Yes, they do love to play with toys and with the children. They will live longer in a warmer climate. And we found this out when our Hammie got pneumonia. We did our best to feed him small amounts of warm tea water with a drop of honey and made his cage filled with feathers and cotton so he can stay warmer. We placed a heater nearby. He lived for about three years. ❤❤❤❤❤

We had a female rat that ran our apartment, totally! My husband was so in love with her and Vanya would sleep on him as he was watching TV. If he was not there, she would go from one side to the other, standing on her feet and looking for him. Rats just don't live long enough, just long enough to snag our hearts. Vanya was one of a kind, for sure.
Rats are some of the coolest pets to have.... I raised my daughters with Rats for pets and they have them to this day as adults with their own children ❤

This is amazing! This takes a lot of attention and teaching. The rats also get a lot of love and attention and things provided around the house to keep them mentally engaged. Always get rats in a pair, but be very careful! They are very social animals.
This is why it makes me so angry when people shrug off animal experimentation because it’s basically “just rats” (which it isn’t BTW - it’s dogs, cats, pigs, etc). All animals have the capacity to love and feel pain. Any experimentation is beyond cruel especially when there are already alternatives available. It’s a sick world and the FDA is corrupt af.

Domestic rats can be wonderful companions. The sweetest, most gentle, intelligent, and comical animal that I have shared my home with, was a rat. I rescued him from an abusive environment. A couple of decades have gone by since he died, but I still miss him. When I was feeling down, he would do something to make me laugh. My “little guy” 💔

We had a beautiful boy Rex and lived to 3 years and four months which we was told was pretty old for a rat. He was such a sweetheart .
