Why did he take so long to come forward with this information?

A year or two ago, the nephew of a former NYPD officer released the deathbed confession. He was part of the team that was told to arrest Malcolm's heads of security on trumped up charges just days before the assassination. He was told not to talk of it unless he wanted to end up like Malcolm

There is not enough information to change history from this one man's comment so many years later. What is the catch? Why now?
