    What I loved about the Xindi arc especially in the latter parts of the season is that the NX-01 just took more and more damage and they showed it, and continued to show it between episodes, the ship looked like it was barely holding together. One of the things I liked about "Enterprise" was the battle scenes. In TOS and Next Generation, battles were always fought with ships basically holding position and trading shots to see who had the best weapons/shielding. In "Enterprise" they showed the ship actually flying and maneuvering to not only avoid enemy fire but also to place themselves in the best position to fire on the enemy. Much more realistic!

    • @hollismccray3297
      @hollismccray3297 2 роки тому +17

      Enterprise was the first show where all the ships were computer-generated. In TOS, the ship was always shot from the starboard side because all the wiring on the model was on the port side. And the model for the Enterprise in Next Generation was usually upside-down! With no need to mount the models, they had a lot more freedom in planning battles.

    • @Twitchguy
      @Twitchguy Рік тому +6

      Ya it was also budget limits. In multiple interviews creators /director/ special effects artists on TOS TNG really wanted to give us more ships but they didn’t have the budget or the time frame between episodes to make it happen unfortunately. I will say to some degree I miss the model shots over the cgi shots at times. The models gave the ship a realistic look that’s been lost in cgi

      also at the same time while there was starfleet there wasnt a federation like this dates pre captain/admiral pike and captain kirk but i think this is what set the scene for the newer design of the uss enterprise that is seen in the kelvin timeline and even in discovery and the star trek series that follows pike as captain of the enterprise before he became a admiral and james t kirk became captain of the enterprise

    • @JLee-rt6ve

      Pointless, really. There really isn't much practical purpose to maneuvering in space. Aiming systems can adjust much faster than ships can move, and there's usually nothing to hide behind. Getting behind somebody might (or might not) be worthwhile, but it would take so long, the battle would probably be over by then.

    What’s so strange is that back in the 2000s the Xindi Arc was the most evolved plot line that was continuous over any incarnation of Trek other than DS9. The Xindi Arc ran over one season and had a mix of continuous and standalone episodes - in essence what Prodigy, Discovery and Picard are doing now. In essence the change in Enterprise revitalised the show and paved the way for shows like BSG (2003/2004-2010) and others to do long missions where they have limited resources and such. However, it’s ultimately what killed it. I remember after Season 3 aired the comment boards on ST official website said they hated the Season and wanted it to be back to standalone episodes. And now almost 16 years after the show aired people love and clamour over the third Season. I loved Season 3 from the go, it was so refreshing and so great to see a ship that didn’t repair it self so quickly week in and out. It had actual threats and continuous battle damage - which is what BSG (2003/2004-2010) ended up doing as well.

    • @IndySidhu88
      @IndySidhu88 2 роки тому +15

      @@lonknight3197 Yes but that original show didn't involve Ron D Moore whom was a writer and ex producer for TNG, DS9, VOY and eventually BSG 03/04. He was the one pushing for it in Trek with VOY with the Year of Hell two-parter - which was originally supposed to be a year-long event.
      It finally got around to a season-long story line with continuous battle damage in ENT. BSG 79 had aliens, planetary resources and despite being a single storyline and limited resources they didn't look like they were starving and struggling. ENT and BSG 03/04 did that.

    • @andrewm3210
      @andrewm3210 2 роки тому +11

      Enterprise ultimately failed because of lack of support from the network. Seasons 1 and 2 were weak, but so were TNG's. If TNG had been treated the same as Enterprise it wouldn't have lasted past season 4.
      One thing that was a problem for serialized television was the requirement for 25 episode seasons. You can't sustain an engaging story over 25 episodes without a LOT of filler and sidebar episodes. The shorter episodes of modern Trek definitely lend themselves to serialized storytelling.
      However, Season 4 of Enterprise was fantastic and it is almost criminal that the network put it on Friday nights. The 3-part stories were perfect and more engaging than self-contained episodes without the long term commitment of the Xindi arc.

    • @shadowphoenix1696

      Well for the time the NX was a powerful ship that could take hits. Without shield they needed to beef up the armour so it could take as much as it could dish out.
      Also most of the Xinda ships were weaker than the NX.
      Unlike the federation ships in the 24th century that were basically glass canons. An over-reliance on there tech.
      To be fair though Starfleet during the NX days were still thinking more military style despite going out for piece.
      Starfleet in the 24 century were not and design the ships that could defend themselves but nothing for long engagements. But that started to change because of the dominiom war.

      @@Idazmi7, You're exactly on target. I find it hard to credit that he wasn't throughly aware that the actual size of the viewership was considerably more than the standard ratings metrics showed. It was the beginning of the time when an offering could be viewed by other means, though I will grant that there probably weren't many folks watching on DVR. However, the show hardly had a consistent air schedule on UPN, such as it was, at that point. One needed to account for a very bifurcated rendering of the total number of first-run viewers, aggregating a number of differing time slots, among other things to be figured in.
      Moonves chose the obvious and still accepted rating structure to apply the coup de grace. Even worse though, IMO, was his callous and cynical manipulation to restore the IP, when it suited him, all to salvage a streaming service that still appears to be a losing proposition (even with a shiny new moniker). That's another story entirely, certainly, which is best suited for another post.

    The problem with the Xindi arc was (1) it was out of nowhere as far as Trek canon, (2) the resolution was predetermined by the fact that TOS existed, and (3) it was clear from the first few episodes we were gonna get slow-played and teased and made to wait for a story resolution at the end of the whole frikken season. There were some very fine battles and episodes in the Xindi season but overall it was a slog to get to the point where we could see the last episode (teased, of course, by the episode where Earth is destroyed but then they time-mumbo-jumbo their way back out of it). Babylon 5 did it first with the advantage that nobody knew where it would ultimately be going, and BSG pretty much had the same advantage. With the Xindi we knew from the first scene of the season the Xindi were going to try to destroy Earth and would have to be found and stopped somehow. With the other shows we really didn't know what the endgame was that we were waiting for, so even though it was building incrementally we could take each episode on its own. I much preferred the 2-3 episode arcs that Enterprise sometimes did to get a more involved story. The series penultimate two-parter about the terrorists on Mars was one of the best stories of the whole show, and they hit that bar earlier maybe the series would have gotten another season or five.

I would find it hard to credit that any true dialogue would take place for quite awhile, though. First, the Xindi political order would need time to settle into its new composition, with the Reptilians brought down several notches. Also, I think Earth would hesitate to seek them out closely, if for no other reason than their likely needing to be a decent interval, before many humans would look favorably on so seriously dealing with the species' that very nearly destroyed Earth (even with the caveat of the Xindi being deceived, being widely disseminated). As we saw in the final episodes, leading to Terra Firma, there was a nativist movement abroad, about a year later, that would have taken much greater action against such a foray, seeing how dead set it was with even the Vulcans staying around.

    No, the Xindi Arc KILLED the show BEING a prequel everybody KNEW the outcome - the Earth will not be destroyed anyway becouse Kirk and Spock existed.IF the wanted to make a difference they had to make a like Abrams and make a new timeline BUT look how much that critic got. Okay JJ made it good idea very bad.
    The Flaw was already in the first seasion - the should made it nearly on Earth. There had been good scripts for that - the episode about early warpship testing was one of it. Even the hole character of Ensign Maywheater based on it bringing a "real space kid" to the starfleet. We would had witness his final year in the academy and why he was qualified to become helmsman on the NX 01. Also seeing Archer be the captain on a NX Delta. And much more. All that was chancelled for the Temporal Cold War which should be a very much a spy story of the in the 1950ies or 1960ies style. The suliban were able to look like humans and like in Ds9 when the formshifters infiltrated the Earth a lot of that story could have been so Earth.
    The should made the Romulan War instead of the Xindi Arc and how Earth stumbles into it.

    • @Eshanas

      That was the threat of the Xindi Arc, since the last episode of S2. That the timeline is changing, a Xindi conflict isn't even known to the future, so the risk of a new timeline was there.
      Honestly they should had dealt with something that other trek shows didn't show. Ever notice how Alpha Centauri is never referenced in trek beyond Cochrane of Centauri? Maybe it got utterly destroyed. Maybe they could had threatened parts of earth instead, post-ww3 stuff that's jjust on its feet but isn't even mentioned in the show afterwards - a lot of Asia isn't, the east coast, so on.
