Thank you for teaching me how to string a tennis racket. Thanks to you I was able to buy a stringing machine and now I'm not worried about breaking a string on weekends in tournaments or when I want to try a new string or a new tension. A greeting from Reunion Island (a French island in the Indian Ocean).
I've measured the difference in tension when using, and not using the diablo. I found using it actually decreases the tension, by about 1/2 pounds. The main reason for the diablo, and why it should ALWAYS be used, is that it reduces the amount of clamping force needed by the tension head to hold the string. The diablo protects the string, so use it.
Hi Harry ! 🙂 Wow, I Googled how to string a tennis racket... and found your video ! Wow, so glad you made this video ! Really loved how you explained how to do that ! Onto the next video to see how you do the cross stringing ! Thanks so much Harry !
As a stringer myself I always put a starting clamp behind the “anchor” clamp when starting the mains in case that clamps slips. I also always opt for a pro knot but that just comes down to preference. You clearly have been stringing for years because you evenly do the mains- so often I have newbie stringers start in the pro shop that will pull an entire side of crosses before touching the other side which can warp the frame. Good video and even though I have been a stringer for a decade I always enjoy watching another stringer work :)
My brain hurts at the lack of starting clamp behind the first anchor clamp! He basically said, hope for no slippage. How about guarantee that with the starting clamp?!
This is great! Been watching a lot of your videos and thinking about getting back into the game. So much has advanced in technology since the last time I picked up a racquet. Thanks for doing a 'basic' video for those of us 'not in the know'. You have reached a broader audience by not limited your content to 'advanced' viewers.
Brilliant video mate! the best, simplest stringing video for beginners... The second one for crosses is great too.. thanks and all the best to you from London! Cheers.. Ben
I am a professional musician and I am learning stringing with my 14 year old son who's starting to break strings frequently. I figured that if, unlike most pianists, I can learn how to fix my broken grand piano strings just by watching, then why not tennis racquet stringing too!!! Your videos are excellent - very clear, thank you. I have a question re testing the consistency of tension as you go. Given the symmetry, the central two strings when plucked like a guitar should be the same note, as should all the opposite numbers, provided there's an even number on each side which have been done - as the racquet frame is equivalent to a violin/cello/piano 'bridge'. Even though the stringing is being done to an even tension, because of the differing lengths there should be 8 different pitches, corresponding to the 8 pairs which are the same length as each other: the outer strings should be in unison (sounding the same note) just as the first two should. Have you tried this, as if it works in practise, it could be a useful guide for learners who can hear this as to how well we're succeeding in achieving an even tension.
Well some of the other knots are not really that complicated. Both the double half hitch and Parnell knots require going under over and through twice. Some times tying off crosses the clamps are really tight to the tie off grommet and you can use the wilson pro knot where you only go under and over and through once.
@@Fred_P I have two of Babolat Sensor & one of that Wilson in my shop. Babolat's clamp hold the string better than Wilson (I use babolat Clamp on Wilson machine) , more stable and user friendly. muuu...I am so sorry, my English is not good enough to explain the different.
@@jlparcerisa Thanks for responding! By tight you mean with higher tension than what is set? How so, by crushing them with the clamps or the tension head?
Really good video. Was very easy to follow and the camera work was great. Other content creators should take notes from this and the video for part two. I strung my first racket using these techniques.
thanks for showing the trick w/ the starting clamp and the loop. I'm not trying to maximize string that much but switching to a poly from a multi, I'm shorted myself b/c it didn't stretch as I was used to...
Please please make a video stringing with a drop weight machine 😊 You inspired me and my husband to learn how to string but there aren't many drop weight stringing tutorials on UA-cam. Thank you!!
When you pull into the frame on your first hitch, I think you risk damaging that gromet, particularly if it's on the old/brittle side. When you tighten the Pro Knot, you pull away, up and THEN back to seat the tightened knot in the grommet which is IMHO less stress on the grommet. I think the Parnell works the same way, but I don't use that one unless for some reason I don't like the way the tail is going to point.
Wow, another great video. I love your channel. You are an awesome shop owner. I like your tip on using the the starting clam as an extension when the string is too short to pull. A few times I messed up on my measurements so I had to re-start the stringing again. Thank you.
The original name for that clamp is a finishing clamp. They were designed specifically for that purpose. It's just become more common to use them as a starting clamp, especially on crosses.
I learned something by watching this video. When I run short of string to the gripper of the machine I usually join another piece of string with a hard to tie fishing knot. The starting clamp method is much easier.
If you have a drop weight stringer, then you have to set the weight tension with the drop weight, and make sure that when you loop it around the clamp connected to the drop weight, it's tight so you don't have to keep cranking it. Also let the drop wait down slowly so it doesn't catch on anything. The best place to stop cranking it, so you know that it is the right tension, is when the bar holding the drop weight is a little bit above parallel to the ground. Also instead of having to pull knots tight with pliers or something you could use the drop weight and just let it down a tiny bit. Make sure that when you're tying a knot you don't make it the same tension as you would the string or else it will definitely snap, just let it down enough to where the knot is tight enough. I hope this helped you out. 👍
Thanks for the great informative videos on stringing - I've picked up several good pointers - I've been stringing for the last 10 years. Just wondering - does anyone out there have any good suggestions for uses for left over tennis string? Typically you end up with left over pieces that are a foot or two in length - I am hoping that there is a way of re-purposing these than just sending them to the landfill. I've got miles of these leftovers at this point and don't have the heart to just throw them away.
If you could answer a question for me. When I string multifilaments I am always above my set tension on my machine (gamma progression els ii). When I check on the apple app for racquet tension if I set it to 45 pounds for example it will come out 49 when I am finished. This doesn't happen when I string polys, it only happens when I string multis. I have done 3 different strings types on 4 different racquets to check my sanity multiple times and it keeps happening. Any thoughts on why? The polys on the app are a lot closer to what i set, usualy a couple pounds below, but being below my set tension makes a lot more sense to me than being above my set tension.
I've wanted to purchase a stringer but was put off on the price. If someone was to purchase a stringer primarily for self use and for a couple friends, what stringing machine would you recommend? Thanks and keep up the great work!
From personal experience, I started off by getting a used crank machine off Craiglist for $300. It definitely paid for itself, in the long run. I would try looking online for used machine, as you can get a great quality machine for a fraction of the price of a new one. Practice the stringing craft, and as you get better, maybe you get more clients to string for, then upgrade to a better machine.
As someone who's been stringing for a while, I like to see how others do it to pick up some tips: I've never used the starting clamp to aid in pulling knots where necessary, so I look forward to doing that. Other notes- you didn't explain that only doing some mains on one side first, then switching sides is to keep the tension on the frame as even as possible to protect the frame; I found it interesting that you started the string insertion at the head of a throat start, then pulled it back through to the top (I just start at the throat with either side of the string); I don't like cutting the string after knotting until after I release the clamp just to make sure the tension doesn't pull the 2nd knot out if I cut just a little too close. I didn't notice, do you show a 1-piece stringing?
Hi there. Great Channel Mate! You have been very informative for me. I have just started out stringing with my first machine (Gamma Progression II ELS). Have a question about mixing Gauges of string in the crosses and mains. I was contemplating using a 16g in the mains and a 17g in the crosses. is this something you would recommend or not? CHeers. Peter.
Generally, I need a lot more slack than just one inch. I think part of the reason is I have a cheaper stringing machine using a drop weight and the slack has to reach the weight's clamper as well as needing the slack to properly tie off the mains. Another way to save a little time is to measure half the string bed and then simply doubling it instead of re-measuring the other half.
have an inquiry about stringing . i have seen a local stringer at our city always pulls the string at the required tension from the racket throat side . not one time from throat and one time from head,my question how this would affect the tension , racket stability and sweet spot ?

Hi. You;ve got good topics that I've been watching. I'm interested of tennis rackets. Would you have a Head Graphene XT Instinct PWR? What is the name of your store and where is it located?
If that’s polyester string you shouldn’t really be wrapping it around the Diablo. It’s meant for natural gut/synthetic guts, softer strings that crush in the tension head.
Great video. New to stringing. What’s a good string machine to purchase? Has anyone had any experience with Alpha M8 or should I save the money and get a manual crank better?
I have zero knowlege on the Alpha line. I've been using the Gamma drop weight machine for the last 10 years. I only string for myself and friends. I too am in the process of upgrading to a new machine, because I want a consistant string tension, and two because it takes about 3-4 times longer to string with a drop down than it does with an electric or crank/lockdown. If you are very particular with your tension (it has to be to the pound accurate), then diffinately get an electric because it has the constant pull. If you do get a crank/lockdown, you can always add a Wise and save the crank for backup (if you are stringing in an area that doesn't have power or if you need to send the Wise in for service). Check out the Gamma line up...they have a lot of options to choose from, cranks, electric, tabletops. And when shopping for your machine...check out what type of base clamps are with the machine. Another thing to decide is if you want a two-point mounting system or a four-point.
I have the Gamma X2 drop weight stringer for the last 13 years. It's pretty solid. I like the drop weight because it's constant pull and it lasts forever. I only string for myself and a few other people. I like the Gamma X-6 FC if I'm upgrading.
which model # is your Wilson stringer, how much does it cost, and do you recommend it or is there another one you like better that doesn't cost a fortune? Thanks!
Hey, if you string a poly at 45 in the mains. What is the acceptable maximum tension one can or should use on the cross strings without compromising the racquet frame(collapse)?
Whoa, Tennis Spin just keeps putting out good stuff. You're going to run out of subject matter if you keep this pace up, but thanks for the awesome channel
Does cutting a single string in half usually leave you enough for the mains and crosses? I've been pulling the string the length of the racquet as many times as their are mains, plus 1 or 2 pulls. Wasted a Solinco Confidential string by ending up short on the mains, then started over and used more pulls for the mains and was short for the crosses but somehow managed to finish the last cross by hand tightening and clamping it. Was only able to get one half hitch as my last knot and almost wasted a Luxilon. Very frustrating to say the least.
What is the significance of the skeletal graphic design on the shirt. I almost bought on at a sports box store. Also, how would you start if you had flying clamps versus the fixed clamps used in this video?
If you clamp close to the frame, does the string tend to break when one hits the the ball off center where the string has been clamped. Also, starting clamps are expensive but essential to stringing. What are the best companies for starting clamps and floating or flying stringing clamps? I need a replacements.
how accurate are those gadgets that measure string tension? can you test a few of them? also, there are phone apps that test string tension based on the sound the strings make when struck, can you test those too?
No, they are always 12m/40ft, sometimes slightly more, so you can just cut them in half without much thinking. Mains are always longer, so you can also go ~6.2m for the mains and ~5.8m for the crosses, but the result is the same really.
His method will work on the drop weight or any machine if you don't have enough string. I've been using a drop weight for 10 years now, and just do 20' per side to make it simple.
I measure my string the same as you did and add one more segment of the longest main string and give it to a stringing guy, but somehow he said it was not enough length to string the main. He asked for 2 more spare segments of the longest main string. He also required the same for the cross. I don't know what kind of stringing machine he has. I have to cut the string again and throw away the old strings which he said were short.
in your opinion, should pro shops be using 6 point mount machines? I ask this because I've seen some pro shops using 2 point mount machines but have heard 6 point mounts are much better for the racquet. Thanks for the vids and keep up the great work!!
new stringer, really enjoying the tutorial. Silly question, if you realized you had set it to the wrong tension (beginner mistake) is it okay to take out the mains (assuming you did not knot it) and re-tension with the same string?
If you are comparing a constant pull to a crank I think 13 is exaggerating. The string stretches and once you set the clamps it continues to stretch. So constant pull makes it tighter for that 1-2 seconds while setting the clamp. I would say 5-6 pounds tighter on a constant pull.
Why do you do 3 strings on one side before moving to the other side? Is there a reason why we don't do one string on one side, then do one on the other side and keep alternating this way?
Haha knew it, he was short. Don’t do this newbies. Measure the main 8 times the length of the racket and you should be good with out having to use the starting clap as an extension. For crosses, measure his way is ok
I think if you run a store, you're trying to get as much out as a reel without wasting. I think using the starter clamp as such does that well. I do it too. If being frugal is not a consideration, just pull about 20 ft.
First, congratulations for your channel, second, sorry for my poor english... Fellow, how can i know how many pounds or how the maximum tension of a racket support?
Im new to stringing Done about 40 rackets, bought a Gamma Progression ELS 2 You soon realise what’s nice and not so nice to string. 16x19 with 1 skip deff my fav. 18x20 with 2 skips not so nice.
What about lead tape in the top-center of the head? Will you have to remove it?
When you buy just a single set of string, do you still have to measure it?
No, they are always 12m/40ft, sometimes slightly more, so you can just cut them in half without much thinking. Mains are always longer, so you can also go ~6.2m for the mains and ~5.8m for the crosses, but the result is the same really.
Thanks for another video! Thank you for using a Pro Staff 😜
yeah same
What is the type of wall they use to hang all the string and racquets?
Great thanks 😊
Hey
Can u do a video about how to string with 2 knots ?
Love your channel btw 💪🎾
You mean 1 piece stringing?
Can you do a video on recommended poly hybrid combinations? For higher level club recreational players. Thanks,
So if I am on a drop weight, should I do 17 times instead of 16 for the mains because drop weight needs a bit more string to pull the string.
Unless you go from 65 pounds to 30 or so (even then), you won't notice the difference in string length imho
How do u adjust pressure of clamps?
All clamps have adjustment screws
what about that silver racket at first of vid on bottom left -- looks like a bosworth -- any relation to Lendl's?
Hi, my local stringer always tell me that when a raquete is strung on a automatic machine it need 13 lbs less. Is it how The pros do?
Can you be a bit more specific in your request? Just curious 🤔 Thanks
If you are comparing a constant pull to a crank I think 13 is exaggerating. The string stretches and once you set the clamps it continues to stretch. So constant pull makes it tighter for that 1-2 seconds while setting the clamp. I would say 5-6 pounds tighter on a constant pull.
What is the best restringing machine for $400/500 ? Thanks in advance 🙂
ALWAYS USE THE DIABLO. It plays a supportive role for the electronic mecanism, at least when using the Wilson Baiardo machine.
That was always gonna be short, I don’t measure like that but if i did I would of added 2 full more mains for the last main / knot.
I think if you run a store, you're trying to get as much out as a reel without wasting. I think using the starter clamp as such does that well. I do it too. If being frugal is not a consideration, just pull about 20 ft.
Thank you
thank u 🙏
First, congratulations for your channel, second, sorry for my poor english... Fellow, how can i know how many pounds or how the maximum tension of a racket support?
Is written usually on the throat of the racket.
Best tennis youtuber atm rn
I have noticed when you relive tension the clamps are moving a little is that a much of a problem.
Are double knots required? I only see one knot on my rackets.
The first knot may be pulled very tight and into the grommet a little bit which can hide it
parnell and pro knots look like a single knot compared to the double half hitch but there are two knots in a way because they rest upon each other
I just did this racquet on a klippermate...it only has 2 points for mounting. I hope it works ok
A 2-point mounting system is fine...it's all personal preference. But some prefer a 6-point mounting system to prevent racquet distortion.
I have strung oversized rackets at 75 lbs and the 2 point mounting on my Gamma machine never cracked the frame.
How do you manage stringing with no ratchet mechanism on the Klippermate?
@@rishijai I'm not sure what you mean exactly.
Im new to stringing Done about 40 rackets, bought a Gamma Progression ELS 2
You soon realise what’s nice and not so nice to string. 16x19 with 1 skip deff my fav. 18x20 with 2 skips not so nice.
Anyone string Weiss cannon ultra cable, damn thats a nasty string.
Did my first natural gut hybrid the other day, Wow that string stretches.
RPM blast is the worst string I've done. It wants to kink any chance it gets. Black widow isn't that fun either
@@psychofruit I love stringing RPM blast. The coating on it makes it very smooth to string. I hate doing 4G
What is the difference between 2 knots to 4 knots?
Tennis Brain Food. Thank you
Please provide the name and model number of your stringing machine, I currently use an old drop weight type of machine that I’ve had for 50 years. Love your videos too! Please provide the address and contact information for your store as well .thanks George M
What if you string the cross first?
Can you do a video of you playing ( if the courts are open near you )
Might not be something you'd want to see. Lol!
Before I watch the end, I think you will be short in last 2 mains. Let's see. I measure 8x2 of full H to T. That works for me. You are even saving more string!!
I am at 16.20. Guess what, you are short a little bit. That much short can be a factor if you don't a great starting clamp.
But you will string 18-19 rackets per reel vs 17.
