this was my first match at Cardiff Arms Park, 14 years of age - at the time I was disappointed with the result, but now, looking back, I can see what a fantastic team that Wallaby XV was
The commentator said that it was too late for Wales, I remember that game, it was always too late for Wales. That touring side was a different class, best team ever to come to these shores in my lifetime, I wish we had rugby like that now. 👍
I reckon he's very underrated in rugby history. I remember this tour well (I went to the game against Grand Slam Champions Scotland)...and Mark Ella was utterly sensational!
My dad was an Australian living in England at the time and went to see this match, played Aussie rules all his life, his first taste of rugby came when he stayed in London from 1980-1984, he said it was a blast, During this era the players use to go the pub after the games and mix it with the fans. He met Andrew Slack, Mark Ella, Nick Farr-Jones. Apparently. Ella and Slack were both lovely, down to earth bloke willing to have a drink with you but Farr-Jones was a bit up himself though
Compare the recent 2024 Wallabies vs Wales tests with this 1984 edition. Who wouldn’t want the real running and passing speed and skills of past Rugby back with us today? A glaring example of a world sport that has gone backwards in terms of spectacle in the professional era.
Maybe this game was the start of the decline in Welsh rugby as a feared force in world rugby. The Wallabies won comfortably 28-9 and even scored a push over try through a scrum on the Welsh goal line which was unthinkable considering their forward reputation. More pain was to come to Wales with three straight hidings by the ABs in 1987-88

That ground is Famous In Rugby and will forever.
I will share something that I believe: Rugby Is The Game They Play In Heaven

The ball movement by both teams was so much better than most games today
this is the type of thing NZRU needs. good on ya OZ
Great Aussie team - such flair and vision
By a very long way Mark Ella is the
greatest back I have ever seen!

This Australian side was probably better than their 1991&1999 teams that won the world cup
What a great Team Player David Campesie was!

Back when rugby was a running game & not a stopping game.
Australia were playing a different game. Bishop the only player who looked like competing with the Australians.
you could probably show the entire match on youtube and squeeze it into 10 mins, given the ball-in-play time back then.

A travesty that this was David Bishops only cap. WRU should be ashamed.
david bishop is mu cousin!!!!
And he was a great player.
Welsh always known for their sporting character such as booing the kicker
.....and I am not a Randwick fan!
Commentator a little over enthusiastic to say the least. Easy pickings for the Aussies. Welsh era 1978 to 1988 was baron to say the least
